School News Hoke students attend leadership conference The 22nd annual State Leader ship Conference of the North Carolina Future Farmers of America (FFA) was held July 1-5 at R.J. Peeler FFA Camp at White Lake. The Hoke County Chapter was represented by Ronald Branch and Peter Knott. Their vocational agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor are Dan McGougan and Hilton Villines. "Expand Your Horizons" was the theme of this year's con ference. The nearly 200 FFA officer and members in attendence were taught FFA leadership, personal groom ing and etiquette, public speaking and communication skills, as well as goal setting and self-esteem. Other highlights of the week's activities included an International Awareness Evening on the FFA's Work Experience Abroad (WE A) Program, a talent show, FFA Quiz Bowl competition, and a special Fourth of July celebration in honor of America's 209th birth day. The conference staff consisted of established FFA leaders and past state FFA officers from North Carolina. National FFA President, Steve Meredith of Glendale, Kentucky, was present throughout the week to assist with his leadership exper tise while representing the national FFA organization. Also on hand were the 1985-86 state FFA officers, performing in their first official role since their election at the 57th officers, per forming in their first official role since their election at the 57th State FFA Convention held June 12-14 in Raleigh. Placement tests given by Sandhills on July 18 Sandhills Community College will give the Comparative Guidance and Placement Test (CGP) at Hoke High School on Thursday, July 18, at 6 p.m. The CGP is a placement test necessary for students who want to enter a program leading to a degree or diploma. According to Dean of Students Larry Marker, "Sandhills ad ministers the test to all degree seeking students to ensure that students are enrolled in classes at the proper academic level." The CGP measures reading, English, and math abilities. Each program at Sandhills has certain score requirements in each category. A student whose score meets or exceeds the requirements of the particular program is eligi ble to enroll in that program. Hoke County students who plant to enroll in Sandhills' fall classes at Hoke High School and who plan to pursue a degree through the College should take the CGP. The test takes approximately three (3) hours. Nursing candidates may take slightly longer. The cost of the test is $3.00 No preregist ration is necessary. Simply come to Hoke High School at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 18. If you would like more informa tion on the programs offered at Sandhills, contact the College at 692-6185. Easterllng has been selected by the Committee for Education, Inc. to receive a full scholarship to attend a summer residential program at Warren Wilson College at Swannanoa. Bond winner Mr. and Mrs. Otis Dial's daughter Laurie Diane Locklear, Dial won a savings bond of $ 100 and a certificate of appreciation from West Carteret High School in Morehead City. The bond and certificate was presented to her because she wrote a letter to Raleigh about "What the Statue of Liberty Means to me. " She will be attending Hoke High her sophomore year of high school. Edwards appointed as page Brad Edwards of Raeford was appointed and served as a Page in the 1985 Session of the North Carolina General Assembly for the week of May 27-May 31 by Liston B. Ramsey, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representative. Brad was recommended to the Speaker by Representative Danriy DeVane of Raeford. Brad is a junior at Hoke County High School. He is a member of the Hoke High Marching Band, the varsity tennis team and attends Raeford Presbyterian Church. Brad is the son of Alien and Brenda Edwards of East Donaldson Street, Raeford, North Carolina. Raeford student makes UNC-G honors Diane M. Sappenfield of Raeford attained the dean's list at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro during the spring semester which ended recently. Miss Sappenfield, a child development and family relations major, is the daugher of Mrs. M.M. Sappenfield of 408 E. Donaldson Ave., Raeford, and G.A. Sappenfield of 309 Old Farm Road, Raeford. Also, Angela S. Turner of Greensboro, formerly of Hoke County, made the dean's list. Mrs. Turner, a merchandising major, is the daughter of Bessie R. Strother of Route 1, Box 101, Aberdeen. To make the dean's list at UNC G, students must earn a grade point ratio of 3.5 or better and have no grade below a "C" for the semester.
