Sports Carpenter headed for west win tit .? The runner from Hoke County, - rising high school senior Terrell : Carpenter, burned the competition : up in a meet last Saturday in Towson, Maryland. Carpenter broke the standing meet record by jumping 25 feet, one-quarter inches in the long jump in the East Coast Invitational Track Meet. The old record was set by 1984 Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis. The Raeford resident left for the National Junior Olympics in Seat tle on Tuesday. Running with a club out of Raleigh, the East Coast Classics, he will travel across the country to compete. Travel is expensive, and the East i Coast Classic needs money to I allow the team's athletes to have a : chance to compete. There are 20 local businesses and private citizens in the county that believe in Carpenter and have already donated to the team. Western Auto, Howell Drugs, Avery Connell, Home Food Market, Fashions Limited, Heilig Meyers, Hoke Drugs, Family Dollar, Buie's Funeral Home, Let tie McGregor, Neoma Carpenter, Robert Carpenter, William S. Dock cry, Garrett Carpenter, Tom my Thurmon, The Pantry, United Carolina Bank, F. Ward, Exxon Grocery and Jack Tucker's Grocery have all given money to the cause. On Saturday, July 13, Carpenter qualified for the nationals by win ning gold medals in the Region III Junior Olympic Track and Field Competition at N.C. State in Raleigh. Carpenter took top honors in the 100 meter dash and long jump. In the running event, Carpenter finished in 10.59 seconds. That was another regional record. The-former record set last year at 10.66 seconds, was held by cur rent N.C. State runner Danny Peebles. Carpenter just may be the third fastest 100 meter runner in the na tion. Reports of a Dallas runner, a senior, Roy Martin, have come in at 10.18 seconds in the 100. A west coast speedster, Henry Thomas of Hawthorne, California has posted a time of 10.25 seconds in the same event. "That scares me," Carpenter has said. Then the Hoke County runner said: "1 think 1 can do better. Bet ter than 10.18." The national high school record in the 100 in 10.16 seconds. Carpenter retired the shoes he ran in to win the state champion ship in the long jump. If he ever ran a 10.16 or better, he may retire another pair. Deer Track teams win, lose Deer Track's Junior Tennis League competed against Country Club of North Carolina (Southern Pines) on Tuesday, July 16. The Deer Track team lost 8-6 with singles wins made by Chris Phillips, David McDonaFd, and Chris Daley. The doubles' teams of Chris Phillips and Tom Scarborough, Dana English and Amy Cohen, Kim Hawkins and Stephanie Phillips were also victorious over the CCNC team. The team travels to Scotland County this week. The Deer Track Ladies' League team hosted the Fort Bragg II team on Wednesday, July 17. Four singles matches were played with wins being made by Susan Phillips (6-3, 6-3), Anne Hostetler (6-2, 6-1) and Debbie Jackson (5-7, 7-6, 6-3). In the three doubles' matches that followed the team of Anne Hostetler and Mary James were victorious to give the Deer Track team a 4-3 victory over the Fort Bragg ladies' team. The ladies' league will host the Fort Bragg I team this week at Deer Track with matches beginn ing at 9 a.m. Pittman Grove wins tourney Pittman Grove Raiders wins the 2nd Annual Sandhills Invitational softball tournament this past weekend. The Raiders beat a tough St. Pauls team in the championship game 12-7. They also beat Arran Lakes 4-2, New Hope Baptist 11-2, Cedar Falls Bapust 15-5 in going undefeated for the day. Leading hitters were Jimmy Teal 6-10, Mark Madden 6-12 with 3 home runs, Harrison Daniels 5-10. Another tournament is in the planning stages for the Pittman Grove Church in about 3 to 4 weeks. J.H. In the second game of the night, the Red Springs Merchants defeated Beasley's Body Shop 7-0. The final night's game saw the Raeford Jaycees downing Faberge 14-10. R. Wilcox and W. Davis batted 3-4, and C. McDuffie hit 2-4 with one home run, and R. Frahm hit 2-4 to lead the Jaycees in batting. D. Deaton hit 4-5 with one home run, D. Collins batted 3-5, M. Brat cher went 3-4 and C. Taylor added a 2-5 game to lead the hitting for Faberge. In Thursday night's action. Hard and Heavy defeated the Raeford Jaycees 8-7. The leading batters for H&H were: K. McDonald 4-4, N. Singletary hit 2-4 and R. McRae went 2-3. The Jaycees were led by R. Wilcox, who batted 4-4, and D. McNeill and S. Knox, who hit 2-4 apiece. The night's second game went to Faberge, as they defeated Beasley's Body Shop 7-0. In the final game of the week, Boahn Concrete defeated the Red Springs Merchants 7-6. Boahn's leading hitters were: M. Lewis, who went 3-4, and R. Clark who batted 2-4. Red Springs' leading hitters were B. Klingerschmidt who hit 4-4, R. Rogers went 3-3 and M. Smith batted 3-4.
