Parnell's 'pork barrel' aids Hoke, Robeson counties Senator David Parnell (D-Robcson) working with discre tionery funds was able to bring $100,000 worth of investment into Robeson and Hoke counties. A total of $22,500 was ap propriated to the Robeson County Emergency Services to provide funds for equipment and training of the fire departments and rescue squads of Robeson County, thanks to Parnell's efforts. Parnell was also able to acquire $20,000 for the Carolina Civic Center Foundation, Inc. of Lumberton to assist in the ren novation of the Carolina Theater. The Raeford-Hoke County Chamber of Commerce received r $13,000 for the rennovation of the A&R Depot, a historic attraction in Raeford. The Rowland Historical Society, Inc. received $10,000 for the rennovation of the ACL Railroad Depot in downtown Rowland, another major historic attraction in the area. Parnell allocated $6,500 to the Lumbee Regional Development Association for the "Thrifty Food Pantry," a hunger program for needy families in the area. In addition, Parnell allocated $4,000 to the Hoke County Recreation Department to fund a variety of recreational programs. He allocated $4,000 to the South Robeson Rescue Unit in Fairmont to complete the building housing ambulances and equipment. He allocated $4,000 to the Red Springs Fire Department to complete the building designed to house the fire trucks and equipment. Parnell also was able to acquire $4,000 for the Smith's Volunteer Fire Department to assist in building a fire station to house the fire trucks and eqipment. Parkton Rescue Squad also received $4,000 to complete their building housing their ambulances and equipment. Parnell was also able to find $4,000 for the Flora Macdonald Highland Games Ltd. in Red Springs to allow the group to pur chase equipment and promote the Highland Games. South Robeson Public Library in Fairmont also received $4,000 to make improvements in the existing library building. "1 have always felt that the most rewarding thing about legislative service is to assure that your con stituents are having their needs met and that they are getting returns on their state tax dollar.
