Carpenter captures national gold medals Hoke High School rising senior Terrell Carpenter led the East Coast Classics track team to a na tional title and himself to three gold medals in the National Junior Olympics held last week in Seattle, Washington. Last Friday, Carpenter won the long jump in the boys' 17-18 age group. The wind to his back, Carpenter jumped 24 feet, 8 and one-half in ches to take the gold. Carpenter also qualfied for the finals in the 100 meters on Friday. Sunday, Carpenter won gold in the 100 meters with a time of 10.63 seconds. He also ran the anchor leg of the 400 meter relay to give the team a win there also. When Carpenter started his leg of the race, the East Coast Classics team was three yards behind the number one runner. Carpenter is now the National Junior Olympic champion of the long-jump and the 100 meter dash. Deer Track team wins The Deer Track Junior Tennis League pulled out a 7-6 victory over the Scotland team on Tuesday of last week in Laurinburg. The singles winners for Deer Track were Terry Brasier, Todd Odom, Brad Edwards, Tom Scar borough, and Stephen Simpson. Doubles teams of Todd Odom/Brad Edwards and Tom Scarborough/Stephen Simpson were also victorious. ? The team plays Highland Coun try Club of Fayetteville at Deer Track this week. Ladies League The Deer Track Ladies' League lost a close match against the Fort Bragg I team on Wednesday of last week at Deer Track. Susan Phillips and Anne Hostetler were singles' winners and the team of Phillips/Hostetler defeated the no. 1 doubles team from Fort Bragg. The Fort Bragg ladies won 2 singles and 2 doubles matches to led their team to a 4-3 victory. The ladies league will play again on Thursday, August 8 at the Sports Center in Fayetteville. Sports briefs Hard 'N' Heavy, coached by Calvin Singletary, qualified for the USAAA Class D men's state soft ball tournament to be held in Smithfield on August 9-11. The team placed third in the Ft. Bragg Invitational Tournament held last weekend, finishing with a 5-2 tourney record. Hard 'N* Heavy also captured first place season honors in the Hoke County Parks and Recrea tion Men's Softball League. *** Hoke High Volleyball Coach Melissa McGougan is holding tryouts for the girl's team at Mac Ponald Gym on August 5 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. *** ? Pittman Grove Baptist Church ran its record to 13-1 Monday with a win over Cedar Falls Baptist Church. The Raiders were led in hitting by Gregg Davis 2-3, Clarence Bat ton 2-4 and Jimmy Teal 2-4. The Raiders last regular season game is next Monday at 6:30 against Lagrange Baptist. The League playoffs will start after next week. Moving in for tackle Hoke High All Stars Marco Pickett (14 in white) and Elgin Blue (34 in white) move in for a tackle for the East Team during Friday night's 37th Annual East-West All Star Classic in Greensboro. Both Pickett and Blue Pfcoto by Henry Mm played defense for the East squad in a 7-6 loss to the West. The two Hoke High graduates are the first local football players to make the team since 1972 when Russel Davis represented the county. ?> Hf?o Mr Taking break Hoke County's Elgin Blue (right, U), Marco Pickett (center) and Henderson's Mike Applewhite (left) rest during Friday's All-Star game in Greensboro. Pickett h -as one of the four players on the East squad who were switched from their high school playing positions. Pickett moved from quarterback to safety and played with distinc tion, as did Blue, who also played defense. Both Hoke players have signed grant and aide for the com ing year.
