Special dinner will launch Hoke Symphony concert season The Hoke County Chapter of the North Carolina Symphony and the Hoke County Branch of Sand hills Community College will launch a subscription drive to sell 198S-86 season tickets on September 6 with a special evening of music held at the Hoke County Civic Center. "An Evening Together" will feature The North Carolina Sym phony String Quartet, who will perform during the $25 a plate din ner. Former Governor and state Community College President Hon. Robert W. Scott and Mrs. Scott will be special guests. Each ticket for the evening, which begins at 6:30 p.m. include a buffet dinner, the evening's pro gram and a ticket to the North Carolina Chamber Orchestra Con cert to be held on Thursday even ing, November 14. Reservations for the September dinner will be on a first come basis and will be limited to the first 100. Season tickets for the symphony season are S3. Raeford Police Chief Leonard Wiggins reported that six shoplifters were caught last week in local stores. On August 13, a juvenile shoplifter was caught with $4.79 worth of "consumable goods," Wiggins said. The 13-year-old girl has been turned over to juvenile authorities, he said. Tammy Chavis, a 19-year-old Laurinburg resident, was charged with shoplifting SI. 19 in make-up on the same day, said the chief. Also last Tuesday, a 12-year-old juvenile was caught trying to take two toy robots from Raeford's Maxway store. The toys were valued at $7.94, Wiggins said. Last Thursday, Anna Brewer, 31, of Rt. 1, Red Springs, was caught trying to leave Revco with $12.61 in over-the-counter drugs and cosmetics, said Wiggins. On August 17, Lily McLaurin, a 27-year-old Laurinburg resident, was arrested while trying to take 12 bottles of cologne, valued at $81.72, out of the store, he said. Again on last Saturday, Joyce Bullard, of Rt. 1, Red Springs was cited after being caught trying to take $6.18 in diet pills and other drugs out of Revco, Wiggins said. On August 12, Artis McGregory reported to sheriffs deputies that a chainsaw and a spraying tank were taken from a storage room on the Charle's Farm. The equipment was valued at S350. A total of $940 in personal pro perty was taken from the residence of Leon Cummings on August 14, reports say. Hand and power tools, a shotgun and some cash were taken, reports say. Deputies were given a discrip tion of the apparent thieves and their vehicle by a witness, reports say. Morris completes ROTC summer work Cadet Kenneth W. Morris, son of Eutha A. Morris of Rural Route 3, Raeford, received practical work in military leadership at the U.S. Army ROTC advanced camp. Fort Bragg. The six-week camp, attended by cadets normally between their third and fourth year of college. includes instruction in communica tions, management and survival training. Successful completion of the ad vanced camp and graduation from college results in a commission as a second lieutenant in either the U.S. Army, Army Reserve or National Guard for the cadet. The sun rose, burning off a fog that wet everything In sight, but no traffic was to be seen on the usually busy street. Within an hour, this avenue would be crowded and the traffic light at the end of the street would be telling drivers when it was safe to cross Main Street. Car show on tap for Turkey Festival A Race and Antique Car Show will be held Saturday, September 21 in conjunction with the First North Carolina Turkey Festival in Raeford. The show, which will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 3 p.m., is being held in the parking lot behind the Hoke County Courthouse on Main Street in Raeford. A variety of vehicles, in four dif ferent class divisions, will make up the show. Included in the division will be stock cars, drag cars, four-wheel drive dirt and mud trucks, antique cars and restored models. Car owners or crew personnel will be on hand during the day to exhibit their vehicles. Trophies will be awarded to the "BEST IN SHOW in each of the four division. Awards will be presented at 2 p.m. In addition to the four divisions exhibited, plans are being made to feature several Grand National (Show) cars as part of the show. The show, which is being locally sponsored, will give area car buffs an opportunity to exhibit the vehicles they are so proud of. There will be no admission charge.
