...County sets airport hearing (Continued from page 1 A) County Commission Vice Chairman Neill McPhatter asked if the ordinance would limit any ex pansion that may be planned in the future for the airport. "We can't enlarge the airport," Byrd said. Due to private property surrounding the facility and the Fort Bragg Reservation less than one mile from one end of the run way, there is no place for the air port enlargement, said Byrd. A public hearing was set for 9 a.m. on September 3 for the or dinance by the county. According to McFayden, members of the Raeford City Council may also have to set a public hearing date since the air port is jointly owned by the the city and county. Turkey signs OKyd During the meeting, a motion was passed to have signs reading "Home of the N.C. Turkey Festival" placed on the same poles but under existing signs welcoming visitors to Hoke County. The signs will cost between $25 and $30, County Manger Cowan estimated. Memorial tabled Commissioners tabled a request for a contribution to a proposed war veteran's memorial to be plac ed on the lawn of the courthouse. The effort, being headed by ? ^*? I^T Eagle Scout candidates Jay and Josh Pate, would requi-e permis sion from the commissioners to place the monument, Cowan said. "I think we should get a plan and reveiw it before it's begun," Balfour said. "I think we need to know a little bit more about it," Commissioner Wyatt Upchurch said. Currently, Art Gore, a former Hoke County resident, is planning a monument representing the con cept of lasting peace for all the na tions of the world. Gore needs guns from all the major powers in World War II for the monument. Persons interested in donating money or weapons, or helping to get the guns should contact the Pate brothers at 875-2429. Other action Commissioners also: ?Heard a report from Raeford Hoke Economic Developer John Howard on his efforts to upgrade the area's tax base and bring relief to taxpayers. ?Changed their regular meeting date from September 2, Labor Day, to September 3. ?Passed a resolution for the disposal of county property. ?Held an executive session to discuss legal and personnel mat ters. ?Discussed vehicle insurance renewal.
