Craftsman's flowers bloom through year John McGougan and his wife, Betty Lou, never have to wait for spring flowers to bloom in the yard of their Lumber Bridge home. That's because McGougan has provided his wife with year-round flowers, all carved from wood. The McGougan's living room is filled with carefully carved and painted spring daffodils, tulips, crocus and African violets. Each petal is separately carved v and glued together to form the complete flower. Then McGougan attaches the flower to the long wooden stem which he slips into a carved wooden vase. McGougan has spent a life time carving things from all kinds of wood. His home is a testimonial to his love of carving and woodwork ing, with the small animals, larger ducks, furniture and pictures that are found there. This talented craftsman began his hobby with woodworking in high school. His first carving, of a small pig, complete with cloven hooves and curled tail, must have inspired McGougan to try more Hoke Arts Scene By Sonya Falls animals, because he now has a menagerie. One shelf in his den holds more animals then one would fine in a zoo. Kangaroo and elephant, mountain lions and domestic dogs all reside peacefully together here. McGougan's latest creation, a cantaloupe, sits on his animal shelf. "How do you like my can taloupe?" McGougan asks, smil ing. The cantaloupe, complete with webbing and perfect color, looks real. Creating a realistic carving is one of McGougan's goals. "You start off trying to make it realistic. If you can't do that, then you make it pretty," he says, with a grin. Many of McGougan's carvings are an attempt to recreate those things he has known and loved. In a converted pack house behind his home he has on exhibit an old te nant farm which he remembers from his childhood. The farm in cludes the house, outbuildings, animals, and even a pitchfork, its carefully carved tines buried in the hay stack out back. The clothes line is strung with small clothes made by Mrs. McGougan. One of McGougan's favorite nostalgic pieces flies over this replica from the past. A World War I British Tighter, a "Camel," is what the artist considers his best work.- . Upon viewing McGougan's col lection of ducks, one might disagree with this choice. Pintails, mallards, Barrow's Golden Eye, teal, canvas back - McGougan has carved and painted them all. In fact, there's very little that this craftsman has not tried to cap ture in wood. Most of his subjects are relative to the beauty he has found around him on his Hoke County farm. The artist's love for those things he creates is always important and with John McGougan, it is most obvious.
