Hoke County named in guide book for public education ? s Hoke County is included in a detailed guide to public education statistics in 41 eastern North Carolina counties has been published by the East Carolina University Rural Education In stitute. The publication, entitled "Eastern North Carolina: An Education Atlas," was compiled by Dr. Douglas Wilms, faculty geographer with research by graduate student Elizabe'h Hollar of the ECU School of Education. It features more than 30 maps with cartographic symbols il lustrating county-by-county population data, economic statistics, school enrollment data, retention and dropout rates, and student achievement in reading and mathematics. "This publication is intended to answer a serious need - to supply a data base relating to our predominantly rural schools of eastern North Carolina,- said Katheryn Lewis, associate director of the ECU Rural Education In stitute. "We are different; our strengths and weaknesses are different from education systems in. such urban areas as Wake County, Charlotte/Mecklenburg County or Winston-Salem/Forsyth County," she said. Mrs. Lewis said copies of the atlas have been distributed to legislators from the eastern region, as well as school superintendents and officials of the N.C. State Department of Public Instruction, along with other law and policy makers. Additional copies are available for* distribution to school board members, county commissioners and other interested persons, as long as the supply lasts. A later printing of the atlas is scheduled, and copies will then be mailed at cost upon request. Funding for the initial printing was provided through grants from the Z. Smith Reynolds Founda tion, the ECU Foundation and the ECU Alumni Association. Data for the publication's statistical graphs originated from the Office of State Budget and Management, "North Carolina Statistical Abstracts," "N.C. Public Schools Statistical Profile," the N.C. State Data Center, the Atlantic Center for Research in Education, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction's Division of Research and the U.S. Census Bureau.
