Sept. 4 MINORITY BUSINESS LEAGUE ? The Hoke County Minority Business League will meet Wednesday at Virgil's Drive In on Highway 401 at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4. Sept. 5 VOLUNTEER MONTH - Hoke Reading/Literacy Council will celebrate "Literacy Volunteer Recognition Month" during September. Among the activities planned are a Student/Tutor Recep tion on September 5, "Literacy Sunday" on September 8, and "$ for Literacy" September 2-8. The literacy month activities will also include participation in The North Carolina Turkey Festival. For more information please call 875-2145. Sept. 6 HILLCREST 4-H ? The Hillcrest 4-H Club will meet Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at the office of the Hoke County Extension Service. New members are welcome. Sept. 7 WINE JUDGING ? If you are a North Carolina Wine connoisseur you have a treat in store. You will get to sample wines that are so unique that you can't buy them in any store in the world. They belong to a very private wine stock, the stock of home winemakers from all across our great states The awards will be presented at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7. After the awards ceremonies, the win ning wines will be made available for tasting. Home winemakers from all over North Carolina are invited to share a bottle from their own private stock for this event. Everyone is invited to come and share, so bring a friend with you. "SHAGGING ON THE COMMONS" -- The Olde Fayetteville Association and the Fayetteville Area Shaggers Association will sponsor a beach music party on the Olde Fayetteville Commons on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 5 until 8 p.m. A special attraction of this event will be a one hour dance demonstration by the Shaggers Association beginning at 5 followed by two hours of beach music. Join the Olde Fayetteville Association and the Shaggers Association for a fun evening of "Shagg ing on the Commons" in downtown Fayetteville. Food will be available. SPECIAL PERFORMANCE ? The Lighthouse Boys of Cameron will be performing at the Living Faith Ministries on Sat., Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. PATIENCE ? The eccentric poet, Bunt home, (George Roraback ) vainly tries to win the affection of Patience, the village milkmaid, (Paula Young ) in a scene from the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operetta, "Patience, " to be presented at the Cumberland County Memorial Auditorium in Fayetteville for three performances on September 13-15. I Sept. 8 "THE NUTCRACKER" AUDITIONS -- The Dance Theater of Fayetteville will hold auditions for their thirteenth season's Performing Company on Sept. 8, 2 p.m. at Methodist College Auditorium. All parts will be assigned by audition only. There are dance roles for adults and children over the age of 9 years. All dancers will do a class audition. You may also prepare a 2 minute audition, for which you must bring your own cassette tape or record. The 1985-86 season will open with the traditional production of "The Nutcracker" along with other short works. Besides performing locally, the Company has been invited to perform in Raleigh, Greensboro and surrounding communities. Dancers can expect to obtain valuable performance experience in con junction with the opportunity to exhibit skills. All local and area performers are encouraged to ap ply. MEN'S DAY - The men of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church (Wagram) will be observing their annual Men's Day on Sunday, Sept. 8. Morning service will be at 1 1 a.m. The speaker will be John O. McDonald. Afternoon service will begin at 4 p.m. The speaker, Rev. William Ruthwell of Laurinburg. Everyone is invited to attend. BALLET AUDITIONS ? NC State Ballet will hold auditions in Fayetteville on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Charlotte Blume Studio, 1312 Morganton Rd. for the production of "The Nut cracker" also seeking people who are interested in sets and props. Sept. 9-13 REVIVAL -- A revival will be held at the Freedom Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, nightly at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 9-13. The speaker will be Rev. Otis McMillan from Fayetteville. CHURCH REVIVAL ? The Mt. Carmel Holy Church of God will hold a church revival on Sept. 9-12. Bishop O.L. Conyer will be the featured speaker during the services which begin at 7:30 nightly. The church is located on Airport Road in Raeford. The public is invited. Sept. 9, 16 BELT WORKSHOP - The Agricultural Extension Service will be holding a belt workshop on Sept. 9 and 16. There will be a daytime class and a class at night. Daytime: September 9 and 16 -10-12 (or longer if needed); Night: September 9 and 16 - 7-9 p.m. Participants will need to attend both sessions. Some belts will require sewing skills, but others will not. Participants will need to buy their materials for the belt they selected before the second class. Some materials may be available from the instructor. Classes will be limited in size due to the need for individual attention. Please register by calling 875-2162. There is no charge for the class, but participants will be taken on a first come first serve basis. Sept. 15 USHER'S DAY - The Ushers of Spring Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Wagram, will celebrate their Annual Usher's Day, Sept. 15, during 11 a.m. Morning Service. Turner, the Secretary of Ushers of the General Baptist State Convention of Raleigh, will be the guest speaker. Rev. J.D. McDonald is the Pastor. Sept. 19 BRIDGE TOURNAMENT - The first Turkey Bridge Tournament will be held Thursday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Raeford Civic Center. Morris made his remarks during a retirement party held Monday to honor Upchurch. The day was also her birthday, and plenty of food and cake were on hand as well as gifts. Upchurch was also honored on Friday at a dinner held at the JFR Barn in Southern Pines. She was hosted by 12 of her co-workers and former employees of Dickson Press. She was remembered with a gift from the group. During Monday's party, fellow employees gathered in the Dickson Press office. The bride, formerly of Youngstown, Ohio, is store manager of K and K. Toys in Myr tle Beach. The groom, formerly of Raeford, is a District Manager of K and K Toys. The couple is residing in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Local students make dean's list Seven Raeford area students made the Sandhills Community College Dean's list for the Summer quarter. The students are: Carol L. Britt, Linda L. Daniel, Jack F. Frazier, Mary A. Huff, Myrtle R. McGregor, Brenda J. Tillman, and Cynthia J. Wilson-Banks. Personals Jane Hinnant of Tampa, Florida is spending this week with her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Ed McDuffie. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Russell and their daughters of Clarksville, Va. visited Mr. and Mrs. Ken McNeill and Kim in Raeford and Holdens Beach last week. Mrs. Tom Cameron's guest this weekend was her sister, Mrs. Ran dolph Charles of Bennettsville, S.C. Mrs. Carl Weissmann of Moline, 111. recently spent some time with Mrs. Eleanor Wooten. The former Alice Nesbitt, Mrs. Weissman grew up in Raeford. A dinner gathering at the Little Whale Restaurant brought a large group of friends together in her honor. Mrs. Wooten and Mrs. Weissman also spent a few days at Sunset Beach. Lew Upchurch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Upchurch Jr. has left for Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia where he will study this school year. Mrs. Ella Gibson's daughters and their families visited with her this weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Clark and their children came from Reidsville and Mr. and Mrs. Tucker came from Cheraw. S.C. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Phillips and children, Brad and Brooke, of Asheboro spent Sunday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Up church and Mrs. W.C. Phillips. Mr. and Mrs. Neill D. Currie of Savannah, Ga. visited his nephew David Scott Currie and Jane L. Currie of Raeford last week. Bill Southern spent last week in Fairview, Montana visiting his brother, Frank Southern, and his family. His trip included places of interest in Canada, North Dakota and Montana.
