i. Weeks To Come ; _ Announcements SQUARE DANCE CLINIC ? The Hoke County Swingers plan to sponsor a Western Style Square v Dance Clinic. The classes will be held in the dance hall above Howell Drug Store. Anyone in terested may sign up for these classes on Wednesday, Sept. 25 or Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. Sept. 26 ? 29 MULE DAYS - The 36th Annual Mule Days will be held in Benson. The events range from Mule pulilng to a street dance. Everyone is invited. Sept. 27-29 MALCOLM BLUE - The ISth Malcolm Blue Crafts and Skills Festival will be held Sept. 27, 28 and 29. Location of the festival is the Malcolm Blue Farm on Hwy. 5, East, in Aberdeen, just past old Bethesda Church. Entry gate fee is $1. Sept. 28 BIKE-A-THON - A bike-a-thon will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 1 a.m. start ing at Hoke High School. The event will aid the Leukemia Society of America. Sept. 29 GOSPEL SING -- There will be a Gospel Singing on Sunday, Sept. 29 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Rockfish at 7:30 p.m. The Lighthouse Boys of Cameron will be featured. INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL - The Seventh Annual International Folk Festival will be held in downtown Fayetteville on Sunday, Sept. 29, from noon until 5 p.m. with the Afro-Americans as the honored nation. Sept. 30 -Oct. 5 ROBESON AG. FAIR - A traveling circus show and a beauty pageant will highlight this year's 39th running of the Robeson County Agricultural and Industrial Fair. The fair, which attracted last year more than 60,000 people from Robeson and surrounding counties, will be held Sept. 30-0ct. 5 at the fairgrounds on N.C. 41 in Lumberton. Other fair features and events include: Hog Show, Hog Calling-Corn Shucking-Corn Shelling contests, Old Country Fair Night, Chain Saw Cutting Contest, Diaper Derby, Bobby McLamb and the Pilgrims, Gospel Concert, Ladies Mud Wrestling, Midnight Madness, Sky Divers, High School Cheerleaders contest, McDonald's Day, 4-H and FFA Tractor Driving Contest, Battle of the Bands, Children's Day, Wet T-Shirt Contest, Square Dance Exhibition, Senior Citizens Day, 4-H Poultry Sale, Bikes and Pepsi Drawings. Oct. 3 ANDY AT PEMBROKE - Andy Park, a humorist as well as meteorologist for WTVD-TV in - Durham, will be the speaker at Pembroke State University's annual $50-a-plate fund-raising dinner Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. in the Jones Physical Education Center. CENTRE INGATHERING ? As the cool breeze of autumn and the comfort of milder climate draw near, another fruitful harvest is emminent and the season is just right for good friends to gather for great food and fellowship. Wadesboro will hold its annual People Fest event on Saturday, Oct. 12 in the town of Wadesboro, Anson County, 52 miles east of Charlotte on Highway 74. This festival will involve and feature people from throughout the Carolinas and be highlighted with entertainment, featuring the band Sugarcreek, a variety of foods, homemade arts and crafts and fireworks. Plan to come anytime from 10 a.m. through 10 p.m. Meetings IN C ONCER T ? The season '85- '86 will open at the Pembroke State University's Paul R. Givens Performing Arts Center on Thursday, October 3, at 8 p.m., with Lionel Hampton, and his 15-piece or chestra. Prior to the evening's performance, a Cham pagne Gala will be held for season subscribers begin ning at 6:30, and the opening of an art exhibit by six North Carolina artists will begin at 7:30. Oct. __ HOMECOMING - The Mount Carmel Church of God in Raeford will hold a "Homecoming, Family and Friend Day" on Oct. 13 all day. The public is invited. Nov. 16 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR - The annual Pittman Grove Baptist Church Christmas Bazaar will be held on Nov. 16 at 9 a.m. at the church. Norton and Gibson worked with other organization members to get the old train station ready for the Turkey Festival. Miss NC to host Robeson pageant Fayetteville's Joni Parker, the 1985 Miss North Carolina, will serve as master of ceremonict for Robeson County's first fair queen pageant during opening night of the Robeson County Fair. The pageant is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Monday, September 30 at the fairgrounds on N.C. 41 in Lumberton. Admission is SI. Parker, who recently returned from competing in the Miss America contest in Atlantic City, N.J., will also perform during the pageant, according to fair commit tee member Jack Johnson. During the Miss America contest, the 3-9 blue-eyed brunette sang "The Shadow of Your Smile." Parker, 24, competed in the Miss North Carolina pageant as Miss Fayetteville, winning the crown June 30 in Raleigh Library emersed in festival The Hoke County Public Library was most involved in the North Carolina Turkey Festival. The library was the setting for the Opening Ceremonies featuring Agriculture Commissioner Jim Graham and Miss North Carolina Joni Parker. The Cooking Contest and enter tainment on Saturday were also highlights of the festival for the library. We enjoyed being in the midst of the activity throughout the festival. All comments expressed were certainly positive ones - we were delighted about that! Doris Austin, Ginny and Art Hayes, Betty and Ralph Bamhart, Edna McNeill^ Catherine Blue, and Eloise Roberts served punch, greeted guest, ran errands, and entertained the many people who came for the Opening Ceremonies and Cooking contest on Wednes day. The library staff was wonderful. They gave directions, watched food, made phone calls, calmed nerves, and saw that everyone received what they needed. The library begins STORY HOURS for the children this week. If you are in doubt as to the day and time of the story hour for your child, please call the library 875-2502 and ask for Betsy McNeill.
