Feline Peritonitis takes toll on cats
Feline Infectious * Peritonitis
(FIP) is a fatal disease of cats.
Although rarer than Feline
leukemia, FIP has been seen in
domestic cats in nearly every area
of the world. It is caused by corona
virus.
This disease represents a serious
threat to cats between the age of
six months to two years of age.
Research has shown an increas
ed incidence in older cats also.
FIP lesions are caused by the
virus invading certain tissues
resulting in a tremendous inflam
mation.
This inflammation releases
fibrinous fluid into the chest or ab
domen.
There are two types of FIP.
The wet form is the most com
mon while the dry is less common
ly seen.
The type of disease is determin
ed by the amount of proteinaceous
fluid released within the chest and
abdomen. Clinical signs are fever,
weight loss, difficult breathing and

fed milk as it will cause a diarrhea.
If milk is introduced, it must be
done slowly and then it can be a
valuable nutritional supplement.
My dog has diarrhea so should I
give him a worm treatment?
Answer: Indiscriminate worming
of your pet without proper
diagnosis can lead to serious pro
blems. Before your dog is wormed,
a stool analysis is strongly recom
mended to determine if he really
has worms. Accurate diagnosis
determines proper treatment and
unnecessary stress to a sick pet.
