DEADLINES: Weddings A Engagements, Thursday 5 p.m. Other Social Items, Monday 5 p.m. Finlayson-Stokes marry on Sept. 28 Miss Lydia McKeithan Stokes, ) daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Stokes, and John Marcus Finlayson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph D. Finlayson of Charlotte, were married September 28 in the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington. Mrs. Stokes is the grand daughter of Mrs. Herbert McKeithan of Raeford and the late Mr. McKeithan. * Dr. Edward C. Hay officiated at 9 the ceremony. Music was presented by Mrs. Charles Woodward, organist, and Harry McLamb, trumpeter. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a white silk crepe gown with beaded Alencon lace bodice and skirt. Her veil was trim med with the same Alencon lace. Miss Dale Williamson attended * the bride as maid of honor. She ^ and the bridesmaids wore tea length dresses of tissue taffeta in azalea rose. Bridesmaids were Miss Anne Fox of Cambridge, Mass., Miss Deborah Fox, Miss Jane Hensdale, Miss Laurie Lewis and Mrs. R.A. Sossaman of Raleigh, Miss Leslie Purcell of Chapel Hill, cousin of the bride, and Mrs. Carl Racine of Durham. Ralph D. Finlayson, father of the groom, was best man. Groomsmen were Linwood H. Clark, HI of Richmond, Va., Thad H. Faison and Mark Merritt of Charlotte, C. Lee Ives, III of Marietta, Ga., Thomas R.J. Newbern of Ahoskie, Michael J.E. Bozzmaki, W. Walter* Ricks, C. Bynum Satterwhite and William W. Stokes, brother of the bride, of Raleigh. A reception at Cape Fear Coun try Club followed the ceremony. The groom's parents hosted a dinner on Friday evening before the wedding at Poplar Grove Plan tation. The bride's family hosted a brunch before the wedding at Riverboat Landing. Woman's Club Education Garden Public Affairs The Arts The Raefof-d Woman's Club has dedicated its yearbook this year to one of its most active members, Mrs. Crawford Thomas Jr. Her enthusiasm for Woman's Club work and her position of leadership in the community has won her much respect from her peers. Kay Thomas served as Secretary of the first annual N.C. Turkey Festival. She supports the Hoke County Council on the Status of Women and the Hoke Historical Associations. She serves on the Curriculum Committee of the Hoke County Higher Education Foundation, and she served as a delegate to the N.C. Utilities Com mission on the matter of telephone expansion service in Hoke County. She has a full-time job, as well as editing publicity of Woman's Club news for The News-Journal. And, if this is not enough, she teaches Sunday School at the Raeford United Methodist Church. Kay is a dedicated wife and a mother of a fifteen-year-old daughter. She has the belief that Raeford is a wonderful place to live, and that only caring, working citizens can keep it growing in good directions. The Raeford Woman's Club salutes Mrs. Kay Thomas as the 1985 Clubwoman of the Year! Public affairs meets The Public Affairs Department of the Woman's Club of Raeford met on Tuesday evening, October 1 . Miss Barbara Buie was the guest speaker. She presented informa tion about Hoke County's literacy efforts and an appeal for support and participation in these efforts. Miss Buie was introduced by Miss Caroline Parker, Program Chair man. Mrs. Stanley Koonce, Depart ment Chairman, presided for the business meeting. Important items for discussion were the Club's in volvement in the Turkey Festival and the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs District Nine meeting to be held in Raeford on October 24. Hostesses for the meeting were Mrs. Glenn Wood, Mrs. Paul Liv ingston, and Mrs. B.F. Ferguson. They served refreshments after Miss Buie's presentation. The meeting was held in the Wood Home. Mrs. Kate Weber was elected Sec. and Treas., as Mrs. Georgia Beck resigned due to not able to serve another year. The member's agreed to cancel the auction sale which was scheduled for the last of October, and each member donate $25, which would be given to the Fireman's Fund. The annual Bake Sale will be held November 23. Also, plans were made to attend the Annual Volunteer Fireman's Ladies Night Dinner in Lumberton Friday, October 11, present- Kate Weber, Effie For bis, Mary McNeill, Genilla Dearen, Ida Smith, Katie Lou Johnson, Helen Rhyder, Daphine Shaw, Pam Lewis, Marian Sumner, Geogia Beck, Mae Dunshee, Debbie Chason, ' Lois Sumner and Lib Sumner. History group promotes NC Museum memberships A committee of Hoke County women has been formed to pro mote membership in the North Carolina Museum of History Associates. Members of the group met in the home of Mrs. Buck Adams in Pinehurst with area volunteers for luncheon and an orientation ses sion recently. Mrs. N.L. McFadyen, local chairman, states that museum memberships begin at $15 and may be obtained by calling any Hoke committee member. Campaign volunteers previewed a program, "The Way We Were in North Carolina", which was pro duced .a^d funded by the Museum Associates.
