Letting the public know
Members of the Hoke County emergency services wrapped
up a week of demonstrations, dinners and parades Saturday,
as fire, rescue and ambulance personnel worked together to
make the public more aware of the services they provide.
During the week, EMS workers conducted demonstrations
at the schools, held an open house and erected a sobering
display at the old National Guard Armory in an effort to give
Hoke County residents a clcarer picture of the daily routine of
the ambulance crews.
Members of the Hoke County volunteer Rescue Squad, also
had equipment on display and held an open house of their
facilities.
On Tuesday night, the firemen in the county were honored
for their service at an annual dinner held at the Gibson
Cafeteria at Hoke High.
The event is sponsored by the Raeford-Hoke Chamber of
Commerce.
On Saturday, rescue vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances
paraded down Main Street prior to the annual firemen's com
petition.
During the events, some county firemen were timed for
speed on putting on turnout gear.
Competitors ran an obstacle course, raced through a bucket
brigade and fought each other in a final squirtoff.
Antioch Volunteer Fire Department captured the trophy
for the day's competition, and dethroned last year's champ
Stonewall.
Rescue Squad members spent a portion of the afternoon
dismantling an automobile in an effort to demonstrate equip
ment which is available to save persons trapped inside a
wrecked vehicle.
EMS workers conducted CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscita
tion) demonstrations as the week came to a close.
