J RM rORD Pair convicted for biting fray Two of the four defendants, ? who were involved in an October 3 high speed chase and altercation in which a Hoke County law enforce ment officer was bitten, were found guilty in District Court last week and sentenced to more than 18 months in jail. John Howard Graham, 27, of White Oak Road, and Willie Howard Graham, 27, of Rt. 3 Raeford, were found guilty of numerous charges stemming from the incident and sentenced by Judge Sol Cherry to serve time with the North Carolina Depart ment of Corrections. John Graham was found guilty of assaulting Hoke County Deputy Sheriff Clarence H. Patterson by grabbing him as the officer at tempted to arrest Sharon Graham, who allegedly bit the officer. On the assaulting an officer charge, John Graham received 18 months in jail or not more than two years. Sharon Graham has not gone on trial. John Graham was also found guilty of hit and run property damage, after the car in which he was driving slammed into Patter son's vehicle during a "get away" high speed chase. In addition, John Graham was found guilty of careless and reckless driving (speeding to elude arrest), failure to stop for a blue light and siren, no registration, no driver's license, no financial responsibility and driving while impaired. For the assorted charges, John Graham received a consecutive sentence of not less than eight months nor more than 12 months. He was given credit for already serving 15 days in the Hoke Coun ty Jail since his arrest. Willie Graham was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest and failure to stop for a blue light and siren for which he was sentenced to six months in jail. Willie Graham also was found guilty of hit and run property damage and no operator's license. On those charges, Graham was given a consecutive sentence of not less than eight months in jail or more than 12 months. Credit was given for the 15 days Graham has served in jail since the Harmony Heights Mobile Home Park incident. On Friday, assault cases were the order of the day. Helen Douglas, 38, of Rt.l Raeford was found guilty of assaulting Carolyn Farmer and sentenced to three years probation and made to pay a $300, as well as all of the victim's medical bills. The incident occurred on July 8. An apparent brawl on October 5, landed four defendants in court on Friday. Balbena Cobb, of Rt. 2 Raeford, who was accused of hit ting Vennardra Graham on the back and legs with a 2X4 on Oc tober 5, was found not guilty. Doris Graham, of lot 8 Lisenby Mobile Home Park, was also found not guilty of inflicting serious injury on Balbena Cobb by hitting her with a large soft drink bottle during the same October 5 indicent. Vennardra Graham, of Autry Street, was found guilty of inflic ting serious injury on Balbena Cobb by striking her with a 2X4 on ? the hand and breaking her middle finger. Graham is appealing the verdict. An appeal bond of S500 was ordered by Judge Cherry. Carolyn Hasty McKenzie, 33, of Sandhills Mobile Home Park, was also found not guilty of cutting Doris Graham on the right hand during the October 5 affray. In addition, McKenzie was found not guilty of hitting Vennar dra Graham on the head and body with a baseball bat and shovel. In an unrelated incident, Mit chell Parker, of Rock fish Road, was found not guilty of firing a shotgun at Russell Lyle on September 20. In another case on Friday, Walter Lee Lindsay, 21, was found guilty of grabbing Debra Baker by the arm and twisting it and grab bing her by the neck. Lindsay was sentenced to one year of supervised probation and ordered to report to Sandhills Mental Health Agency for treat ment. In still another incident, Thomas Oneal Hamm, 37, of Forest Street in Raeford, was found guilty of threatening Lorretta Jacobs and threatening Sarah Hamm. Thomas Hamm was charged with telling Jacobs: "Your house will go up in flames tonight," on September 27, and Sarah Hamm: "I will kill you," on the same day. Hamm was given 90 days suspended with one year of un supervised probation on the con solidated charges and told to stay away from the two women during the probationary period. Jacobs' dwelling apparently did not burn, according to the court records. Also in District Court last week, these cases were resolved: ?Arnold Ray Jacobs, 27, of Rt.l Red Springs, was found guilty of stealing an air conditioner and refrigerator from Maggie Hunt. The property was valued at more than $250. ?Ardrie Graham, Rt.l Raeford, was found guilty of Driving While Impaired (DWI) and traveling with an open liquor bottle. Graham was sentenced to 72 hours of community service plus $200 in fines and court costs. ?Postel Wall, 44, of Shannon, was sentenced to one day in the Hoke County Jail for being drunk and disruptive. ?Alberta Baldwin, SO, of Rt.l Raeford, was found not guilty of assaulting Willie F. Brown with a butcher knife by chasing him and threatening to kill him. ?Walter Baldwin, of Lumber Bridge, was found guilty of writing a bad $30 check to the Fast Shop. He was ordered to make restitution and pay a $10 fine. ?Sherry E. Byrd, of Fayetteville, was sentenced to 90 days in jail for writing three bad checks and violating her probation. Byrd has minor children and dependent children. ?George W. Hollings worth, of Rt.l Red Springs, was found guilty of issuing three bad checks and sentenced to make restitution and pay a $10 fine. Energy aid is offered The Low income Energy Assistance Program provides a one-time cash payment to help eligible families pay their heating bills. Families must meet all the following requirements to be eligi ble: ?The household's total coun table income must be at or below 1 10% of the current poverty level. ?The household must be respon sible for its heating bills. ?If a family lives in public hous ing or in government subsidized housing and receives a utility allowance, it may be eligible for a partial payment. The household can not have assets that exceed S2.200. ?The following assets are ex cluded from the $2,200 total: home, household/personal belong ings, car, income-producing pro perty, insurance, value of prepaid burial contracts, burial plots, sav ings account of a student 18 years of age or younger that will be used for school expenses, relocation assistance payments, money in a checking account that will be used to meet monthly living expenses, non-salable life estate or remainder interests, heir property, or HUD community development block grant funds. Residents living in Hoke County should apply at the Energy Assistance Office located at the in tersection of Donaldson and Dickson sometime between now and the 27th of November. Elderly or handicapped persons who wish to apply may call 875-6166 for assistance, or send a representative to the Energy Of fice. The following factors will deter mine the amount of the payment: The number of people in the household, the amount of income the household receives, the type of ' heating fuel the household uses, and the region of the state where the family lives.
