School News ? Archer is serving as Governor's page Sarah Archer of Old Farm Road in Raeford is serving as a page this week in Raleigh with the Depart ment of Administration. The daughter of Harriet and I .William C. Archer, Sarah Archer is a senior at Hoke County High School. Governor's pages are chosen on the basis of merit by their high school teachers. Pages assist the various departments in their com munications with other State government offices. They are also given the opportunity to tour state ' museums, the Governor's mansion | and the Legislative building. Dicker promoted Charles P. Dicker Jr., son of Charles P. Dicker of Main Street, Waltham, Massachusetts, and Karen E. Fuller of Preston Street, Lynn, Massachusetts, has been promoted in the U.S. Army to the rank of sergeant. Dicker is an air defense gunnery I crew member at Fort Bragg, N.C., with the 82nd Airborne Divison. His wife, Judy, is the daughter I of Manfred L. Gluecker of ? Morganton Road, Fayetteville, and Brigitte Harrell of Rural Route, Raeford. National School Lunch Week Hoke County Schools celebrated National School Lunch Week Oc tober 13-19, In their schools by using menus that were used nationwide. Menus were planned with different regions in mind, such as the Southern menu using Fried Chicken, Green Beans, Biscuits and Sweet Potato Pie. Parents of the children were Invited to join their child for lunch. Around 1,500 parents came to eat lunch and visit the school. The school children of today are the Nation '$ future citizens of tomor row. Eating a nutritious lunch each day provides a huge assist to youngsters that are expected to return their optimum performance and achievement. The metd is accepted as an Integral part of the education scene. Rockport Hoke students attending ECU The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has an enrollment of 10,150 this fall, in cluding seven students from Hoke County. Hoke County is among 95 coun ties in the state that are represented by students at UNC-G during the current academic year. The five North Carolina coun ties which do not have students on campus are Clay, Pamlico, Per quimans, Tyrrell and Washington. The 10,150 students include 7,401 undergraduates and 2,749 graduate students. This year's enrollment represents a slight in crease over the 10,090 figure of a year ago. Class sizes at the undergraduate level are: freshmen, 1,738; sophomores, 1 ,562; juniors, 1,802; seniors, 1,847; plus special students. Forty states and the District of Columbia have sent students to UNC-G this year. In addition, 186 students from 54 foreign countries are represented at UNC-G. Scurlock PTA hears speaker The Scurlock School Parent Teacher Association held a first meeting of the year on Tuesday, October 15. After a short business meeting led by Mrs. Linda Beuscher, PTA President, a short and informative speech was given by Dr. Melvin L. Good, nominee for second vice president of the North Carolina PTA. Dr. Good spoke on the impor tance of joining PTA and gave several purposes of the organiza tion, including informing parents and being a strong political in fluence in support of many educa tion^^fues. Some issues which the PTA has supported in the past are the Basic Education Plan, bus safety and the child restraint law. Nationally, the PTA continues to lobby against the tuition tax credit which they feel will hurt public education. Dr. Good encouraged all those present to join the PTA and help mold the future for their children. She was picked by the faculty because of her loyal dedication to the teaching profession. Her philosophy of education can be summed up in the following statement: If a student fails to learn, the teacher fails to teach. She also believes that all children should be given an opportunity regardless of race, creed, sex or handicap. At J.W. Turlington, Mrs. Taylor is known as a lady of many talents. These talents include acting, comedian, fashion coordinator, and interior designer. She enjoys reading and sewing. Joanne has served as the chair man of Dental Health Week and the school's hospitality commit tees. She is currently serving as the chairman of the A-Team and Philosophy Committees. Mrs. Taylor is married and she has one daughter. Ebony is 10 years old. She attends the Cumberland Public-Schools. - Joanne attends Friendship Bap tist Church in Fayetteville, she is an honor graduate of Fayetteville State University. The faculty of Turlington salutes Mrs. Taylor for her ex cellent work in education. Purcell stationed at Turkey squadron Air Force Airman 1st Class John T. Purcell Jr., son of Regina M. Purcell of Cipriano Woods Court, Lanham, Maryland, and grandson of Hattie Morris of Rural Route 1 , Raeford, has arrived for duty with the 7393rd Munitions Support Squadron, Turkey.
