Opinions Orson Wells will be remembered Orson Wells, the actor and pro ducer recently deceased at 70, is remembered for motion picture firsts, innovations and a unique talent in film-making. He frightened many with realistic broadcasts of an invasion and shocked many with "Citizen Kane." But for many Americans old enough to remember him in his prime, he will always be best remembered for his role as Harry Lime in "The Third Man." It also gave the world a haunt ing melody, from the strings of a Zither, "The Third Man Theme." Wells often said it was his easiest film role, but it was also his most memorable. There was something about that film which keeps it in triguing even today, to each new generation. If he left only that as an enter tainment legacy, it would be quite a lot, and he has helped not a little in it by a perfect performance of his co-star - Valli. Letters To The Editor Resolution wrong To the Editor: This is an open letter to the members of Lumbee River EMC. During the recent annual meeting of Lumbee River EMC 1 observed an act of either hypocracy or great ignorance on the part of the members of LREMC in their sup port of a motion for a resolution by the LREMC Board against establishment of hazardous waste disposal plants in Bladen and Scotland counties. On a mere technical note, neither thp Board nor the members present at that meeting had been given the mandate by the entire membership to make Non LREMC business decisions. But there are other, equally im portant points to be made. Anytime we buy clothes, paints for our homes, it is a contribution towards the creation of hazardous wastes (dyes). Any time plastics are used, man-made fibers, vehicles (battery, oil), any time gardeners and farmers spray their crops or use chemical fertilizers, it is some contribution towards more hazard ous wastes. The ultimate creation of hazardous waste occurs through the production of electricity, which we use everywhere, daily. When the nuclear power plant shuts down for re-fueling, it is withdraw ing the spent fuel -rods, which are highly radio-active, and which need a safe disposal for a 1000 years or more. And you, the LREMC member, are now part owner of one of these plants, and those hazardous wastes are your personal responsibility. Broad St. ? 865-5711 * St. P.ub, N.C, 2SM4 But to bring it even closer to home, the Board of Directors of LREMC recently placed a bid (in a firm's bankruptcy case) for five acres of land, of which approx imately one-half acre is PCB polluted. There could even be a larger subterrainian pollution. Disregarding the dollar loss in this transaction, 1 wish to point out to all the LREMC members that this bid, if sustained, committed you to the removal of PCB contaminated dirt to the tune of as yet unknown number of tons. And you will have to find a benign institution that will take these hazardous wastes off your hands. Of course, it could always be deposited at the doorstep of our Board members and all those voters at LREMC who supported the above motion. There is one piece of hope, however, that somebody show even great "wisdom" than our Board of Directors, and top our bid. I hope so, for all our sakes. But in view of this folly by our Board, I find it ironic what you would ask your Board to support your motion for the above resolu tion. I am as coincerned about the environment and our health as anyone. I love our lands and waters. I expend my personal ef forts to preserve them. But what needs to be emphasized to all LREMC members, and to the general public, is that with every right there goes an obligation. You were saying you have the right not to have these plants; but you also have an obligation to do something about the wastes we help create, besides shoving them into neighboring counties, states, or even countries. Therefore, any resolution passed by you or LREMC should be in support of research towards the safest disposal of hazardous wastes, loca tion of the most suitable sites, in spection by qualified personnel of and search for hazardous waste disposal companies that have the highest of standards. This would show your and LREMC's accep tance of obligtation that comes hand in hand with our rights. Renate Dahlin LREMC Member /Consumer Carnival a success To the Editor: We, the members of the Trainable Multi-handicapped Parents and Volunteer Group, would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the many in dividuals, organizations, church groups, clubs and businesses who so generously donated their time, talents and resources to make our Annual Carnival, Saturday, Oc tober 26, a tremendous success.
