Woodmen attend NC meeting Twenty-three members of Woodmen of the World Lodge 6179 attended the Cape Fear District Convention in Benson on Thursday, October 17. Mary Ruth Haire, president of our local Lodge and also president of the Cape Pear District, presided at the 6 p.m. business session. Three reports covering activities since the last convention were selected to be presented during the business session, and the report from Lodge 6179 was one of the three selected. This was presented by Secretary Evelyn A$hburn, and this was the second consecutive year Lodge 6179's report was selected. Dr. Thomas E. Shaver, National Trustee from Mt. Olive, N.C., was Master of Ceremonies for the 7:30 p.m. evening session. Milton Col lier, president of Benson Lodge 480, gave the welcome from their Lodge, and Charles Matthews, Mayor of Benson, gave the welcome address,. National Director and East N.C. State Manager Harvey Bed sole recognized the guests and in troduced the guest speaker. Na tional Treasurer James L. Mounce from Omaha, Nebraska. Election of Youth Camp Board Members was held and Evelyn Ash burn was elected to serve on this Board. Patti Lunsford, Adult Leader for our local Youth Lodge 1404, was presented a plaque and a gift for her outstanding work with the youth. They received U\ honors at camp this summer. Dr. Shaver presented the atten dance award which was won by Lodge 6179. President Mary Ruth Haire accepted the award on behalf of the members of Lodge 6179. Herb Pate, Cape Fear District Chaplain from Atkinson, N.C., gave the benediction. Personals Mr. and Mrs. Neil Senter went to the mountains for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Upchurch visited their son, Lew, at Fork Union Military Academy recently. Mrs. Harriette Mauney is recuperating at Manor Care in Pinehurst. Mrs. Sherry Hasty has been in Eastlake, Ohio. Her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hobbs, died on October 24. Brandon Marice McFayden, son of Wayne Everette McFayden, celebrated his first birthday on Oc tober 22 in the home of his grand mother, Annie McFadyen, of Raeford. Barry Inman visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Inman, on Sunday. Ruth Evelyn Carmichael Engaged Betty Ruth Wheeler of Route 1 , Fairmont announces the engage ment of her daughter, Ruth Evelyn Carmichael, to Robert Donell McLean. Miss Carmichael graduated from ' Fairmont High School in 1981 and is employed by West Point Pepperell. Her fiance is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry McLean of Raeford. He attended Hoke Coun ty High School and works for Stedman Corp. in Red Springs. The wedding is planned for November 23 ar the Dillon Mar riage Chapel. In Weeks To Come Announcements SINGING SERVICE ? Living Faith Ministries will have its 1st Sat. Monthly Singing Praise Service on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. The Pierce Family of Lumber Bridge will be the featured guest singers. The Living Faith Singers and others will also be singing. Everyone is invited to come. BAZAAR ? The Sandy Grove United Methodist Church will hold a church Bazaar on Nov. 2 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Handmade crafts, baked goods and other items will be sold. A hot lunch of homemade soup, hotdogs and ham and sausage biscuits will be served. FAMILY FUN DAY ? On Saturday, Nov. 2, the friends of the Hoke County Indian Education Program will sponsor a Family Fun Day at South Hoke School. This event will begin around noon and go until! Special activities will be planned for all age groups, so everybody is invited to attend this very special day. Also on the agenda for the day will be free food and a gospel singing. Nov. 3 HOMECOMING - Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church (Wagram) will be observing "Homecoming" Sunday, Nov. 3. Morning services begin at 11 a.m. The pastor, Rev. J.W. Gorham, will be preaching. Dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Afternoon services begin at 3 p.m. with the Rev. M.E. Stubbs, from Aaron Swamp Baptist Church preaching. Choir and Congregation will assist in the services. Nov. 3-6 REVIVAL -- Revival services will be held at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Rockfish. The speaker will be Rev. James Pardue, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Clinton. All are invited. Services are 7:30 each evening. Nov. 5 UPCHURCH OPEN HOUSE -- Upchurch Junior High School is sponsoring an open house on Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Teachers will be in their homerooms from 6:30 until 7:15 p.m. to meet with parents. Parents are asked to visit each of their children's teachers and "sign-in" in their homeroom. The students will be involved in a contest between homerooms. The homeroom having the best attendance of parents in both grades will receive a prize on Friday, November 15. The students will present a short program beginning at 7:15 in the auditorium. The band and chorus will perform and the fall athletes and cheerleaders, will be introduced. The art classes will work on displays and refreshments will be served by the pre-vocation classes. Nov. 7 BETHEL INGATHERING -- The annual ingathering will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church on Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Barbecue pork and chicken salad plates will be sold for $4. MEMORY LOSS -- All persons interested in Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders are in vited to the Family Support Group meeting Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Robeson County Mental Health Center on route 71 1, west of Lumberton. Atha Staton, Assistant Director, Robeson County Department of Social Services, will lead the program outlining Chore and other services which might be available, and answer questions. Nov. 9 HAPPY HOBBY HARVEST -- The Raeford United Methodist Church is sponsoring the annual Happy Hobby Harvest on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 1 1 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and supper from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pork or chicken barbecue plates. The annual Pittman Grove Baptist Church Christmas Bazaar will be held on Nov. 16 at 9 a.m. at the church. ? Meetings CITY COUNCIL - The Raeford City Council meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in City Hall. The public is encouraged to attend. SCHOOL BOARD - The Hoke County Board of Education meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the board offices on Wooley Street. The public is encouraged to attend. Dr. Albert Edwards of The First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh and television Minister brought an inspiring message to the congregation. The Bell Choir also from First Church in Raleigh, directed by Betty Fuller added to the inspira tion, followed by Joni Parker who gave a beautiful testimony and also sang a solo.
