Hoke 4-Hers garner awards The 1985 Hoke County 4-H Achievement Program was held Thursday, October 24. The meeting was called to order by County Council President Leah Herdrix. The U.S. Pledge was led by Troy LaBombard and the 4-H Pledge was led by Mark Campbell. Devotion was by Crystal Henderson. Leslie Ashburn, County Council Reporter recognized the 4-H leaders for their outstanding work during the year. The program "Hoke County 4-H... 1985" was presented by Leah Hendrix and Patrick Miller. They showed slides and pictures of outstanding events this past year. Awards were presented by Willie Featherstone, Jr., County Exten sion Chairman, and Sandra Kelly, 4-H Agent. Those winning awards were: Kimberly Potter - County Winner Health; Leslie Ashburn -County Winner - Photography; Leah Hen drix - County Winner -Public Speaking, Consumer Education, Crafts, Clothing; Tripp Plummer - County Winner - Tractor I; Jason Melton -County Winner - First Aid; Priscilla Carson - County Shook to head Farm-City tvk. Mrs. Caroline Shook of the Stonewall Township has been named the chairperson of Farm City Week in Hoke County for 1985. Mrs. Shook and her husband, George, farm cotton, Corn, Soy beans and wheat, however, their primary crop is cotton. Also, Mrs. Shook was recently named Super visor of Elections for Hoke Coun ty Serving with Mrs. Shook on a committee to plan Farm-City Week observances in the county are Steve Parker, Frank Sessoms, Ken McNeill, Agnes Mae Camp bell, Robert Gibson and Willie Featherstone. Farm-City Week extends from November 22 through November 28, which is Thanksgiving Day. It is an annual event which spotlights a concentrated exchange of ideas and information between farm and city people. It's a time to learn about others - their jobs and their problems. More than 18,000 communities throughout the United States and Canada are expected to participate in this week-long series of events to support the theme; "Farm and City: Partners in Progress ? PEO PLE HELPING PEOPLE." The national chairman this year is Clarence Bizet, Florida Depart ment of Agriculture. The state chairman is Dr. Kenneth May, Vice-President Research and Quality Control, Holly Farms Poultry, Wilkesboro, NC. The Hoke County observance will be sponsored by a cooperative effort of many individuals, buisnesses, and civic organizations throughout Raeford and Hoke County. toucher promoted Lionel H. Boucher, son of Beverly A. Boucher of 65 McGauIIey Ave., Pittsburgh, New York, has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of first lieutenant. Boucher is a deputy flight com mander at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., with the 564th Strategic Missile Wing. ' Hit wife, Carol, is the daughter of Cathleen W. Adam son, of Raeford. He is a 1982 graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Special awards given were: Priscilla Carson - Outstanding Junior 4-H'er; Leah Hendrix -Outstanding Senior 4-H'er; Missy Eikins - "I Dare You" Award; Hillcrest Club - Oustanding Club. The meeting adjourned with the 4-H motto and everyone enjoyed refreshments. 1 Honored for service Greg Wilkerson (left). Manager of Raeford's B.C. Moore's, is presented a bound certificate by J.C. Crawford Jr., President and Chairman of the Board for Moore's, in acknowledgment of Wilker son 's 10 year affiliation with the company. Wilkerson was also given a gold tie-tac complete with three rubies. A native of McColl, South Carolina, Wilkerson has been manager of the local Moore's since 1978. He is married to the former Margaret Ann Stevens of l.oris. South Carolina, and they are parents of one daughter, Paula Denise. Burlington sales off Burlington Industries, Inc. reported recently details by pro duct category of its fiscal 1985 sales. In total, sales for the year were $2,802.1 million, 11.6% below fiscal 1984 sales of $3,168.8 million. Sales of Burlington's products for apparel markets were $1,586.2 million in fiscal 1985, compared to $1,761.4 million last year. As a percent of total sales, products for apparel markets were 56.6% in 1985 and 55.6% in 1984. Burlington's sales of products for the home were $941.4 million in fiscal 1985, 13.5% below last year's record of $1,088.8 million. While sales of the company's decorative fabrics and carpets and rugs were off slightly, the primary cause of the 1985 sales decline was the sale of the company's furniture businesses in early 1985. Sales for domestics (sheets, pillowcases and towels) advanced slightly for the year. Sales of Burlington's products for industry were S274.5 million in fiscal 1985, compared to S3 18.6 million in 1984. Products of the company's Impression Fabrics and Glass Fabrics divisions were adversely affected by the slowdown in the computer in dustry. On October 25, Burlington reported sales and net earnings for its fiscal year. For 1985 sales were $2,802.1 million, with net earnings of S12.6 million, or 44 cents per share. In fiscal 1984 sales were S3, 168.8 million and net earnings were S62.4 million, or $2.18 per share. Heilig-Meyers furniture breaks record for quarter Heilig-Meyers Company, the Richmond based home furnishings chain which operates a store in Raeford, recently announced record revenues and earnings for the second quarter ended September 30. Earnings increased to $2,709,000 or 42 cents per share, on revenues of $47.0 million dur ing the three months ended September 30, compared with $2,323,000 or 37 cents per share, on revenues of $39.2 million a year ago. Weighted average shares outstanding during the period were 6,411,585 compared to 6,265,437 in 1984. For the first six months, earn ings increased to S6.582.000 or $1.04 per share, compared with $5,931,000 or 95 cents per share, for the same period last year. There were 6,345,523 weighted average shares outstanding in 1985 compared to 6,247,068 last year. Revenues rose to $95.1 million from $82.1 million in 1984. Spivey finishes basic training Pvt. 1st Class Arnold V. Spivey, son of Harvey and Lucy M. Spivey of Buie Street, Red Springs, has completed basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. During the training, students received instruction in drill ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid, and Ar my history and traditions. He is a 1981 graduate of Red Springs High Srhool.
