Byrd is assigned
to Sheppard AFB
Airman Huey A. Byrd, son of
Huey I. and Ann S. Byrd of Rural
Route 18, Fayetteville, has been
assigned to Sheppard Air Force
Base, Texas, after completing Air
Force basic training.
During the six weeks at
Lackland Air Force Base, Texas,
the airman studied the Air Force
mission, organization and customs
and received special training in
human relations.
In addition, airmen who com
plete basic training earn credits
toward an associate degree
through the Community College of
the Air Force.
The airman will now receive
specialized instruction in the air
craft maintenance field.
His wife, Phyllis, is the daughter
of Phillip L. Richardson of Aber
deen.
He is a 1978 graduate of Hoke
County High School, Raeford.
Yanchisin
re-enlists
Senior Airman Alicia G. Yan
chisin, daughter of Howard M.
and Mary A. White of Prince
Charles Avenue, Red Springs, has
reenlisted in the U.S. Air Force
after being selected for career
status.
Assigned at Little Rock Air
Force Base, Ark., Yanchisin was
approved for reenlistment by a
board which considered character
and performance.
She is an environmental health
specialist with the Air Force
Hospital.
Her husband, Air Force Sgt.
Timon D. Yanchisin, is the son of
Neal and Bettye Yanchisin of
Chestnut Street, Cooperstown,
New York.
The airman is a 1981 graduate of
Robert E. Lee High School, Spr
ingfield, Virginia.

Sweet Potato Casserole
2-3 cups mashed sweet potatoes
1 cup white sugar
Vi cup milk
Vi cup melted margarine
2 eggs (beaten)
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix together and put in
1 Vi -quart casserole dish. (This will
be soupy).
Topping:
Vi cup creamed margarine
Vi cups brown sugar
'/j cup flour
'/j cup chopped pecans
Mix and put on top of sweet
potato mixture. Bake at 350?
about 30 minutes.
Sweet Potato Cake
1 pint mashed sweet potatoes
2 eggs
1 Vi cup flour
Vi cup milk
'/? cup butter
V* cup sugar
1 teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
Juice of Vi lemon
Add the butter and beaten eggs
to the potato while still hot; add
the sugar, salt and nutmeg or cin
namon. Sift together the flour and
baking powder and add to the
potato alternately with the milk.
Add the lemon juice, pour into a
greased pan and bake in a
moderate oven.
In 1893 the U.S. Supreme Court
unanimously decided that
tomatoes should be considered
vegetables and not fruits. The mat
ter was taken to the Supreme
Court because fruits could enter
the country duty-free wkilc
vegetables could not.
