If you have ever wanted to play
the piano or learn to read music,
the Hoke campus of Sandhills
Community College has the course
for you: Mus 100?Learning to
Read Music.
Designed for anyone wanting
basic instruction, this course
facilitates rapid learning and no
previous knowledge or experience
is required.
The 11 -week course meets on
Thrusday nights from 6:30 to 9:15
p.m. at Hoke High from
December 5 through February 20.
The 3-hour class combines lec
ture and demonstration. Through
the use of portable keyboards and
piano, students will learn music
notation and rhythmic patterns.
The course involves direct student
participation via discussion,
demonstrations, and written exer
cises.
Instructor for the course is Lee
Harris who is co-director of music
and organ at Raeford Presbyterian
Church and music instructor at
Flora MacDonald Academy in Red
Springs.
Harris holds a Bachelor of
Music from Southern Illinois
University with further study at the
Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
West Virginia University, the
University of Evansville, and
Frankfort Hochschule fur Musik.
An experienced clinician in
keyboard instruction. Harris is a
member of the American Guild of
Organists, the American Guild of
English Handbell Ringers, and the
national honorary music fraterni
ty, Delta Omicron.

Home repairs
When did you last have a leak
under the sink or need an electrical
outlet where there was none?
If you had been in Jack Ellis'
Continuing Education class in
Small- Repairs for the Home, you
could have solved these problems
yourself.
Ellis, Director of Inspections of
the Hoke County Inspection
Department and Department Head
in Hoke County Public Buildings
Maintenance Department, will be
sharing his know-how in a class
that will meet on Monday nights
from 7-10 p.m. at Hoke High from
January 6 through February 24.
Ellis' class is geared to
homeowners who would like to
know what is going on behind the
walls and in the circuits of their
homes.
Included in the course will be in
formation on electrical, plumbing,
insulation, heating, and air condi
tioning repair.
Ellis wil! also discuss air condi
tioning circuits, dryer circuits, and
wiring.
Instructor Ellis, in addition, to
being certified by the North
Carolina Department of Insurance
as an inspector in building, elec
trical vsork, plumbing, heating/air
conditioning, insulation and
refrigeration, holds a slate con
tractor's license in general con
struction, refrigeration, heating/
air conditioning, plumbing and
electrical.
Continuing Ed
The winter quarter offering of
continuing education courses at
the Hoke campus of Sandhills
Community College has something
for everyone.
From public speaking to crafts
to emergency medical care to auto
care for women, the schedule is
designed to offer classes that are
both useful and entertaining.
Beginning Dec. 3 and running
through Feb. 25, Robert
Kugelmann will offer a class in
Fundamentals of Real Estate 1
focusing on the salesperson.
Successful completion of this
course will meet the state require
ment for licensing as a real estate
salesperson which, in turn, can
lead to a rewarding career in real
estate.
The class will include basic real
estate concepts, contracts, financ
ing, management, taxes, real estate
math, and much more.
Kugelmann holds a Business Ad
ministration degree, a Masters in
Public Administration, and a
Masters in Management.
In addition, he is a graduate of
the Realtor's Institute at Chapel
Hill and a candidate for the Na
tional Real Estate Educator's
Designation. He has been in real
estate for nine yers and is president
of the North Carolina Rod Estate
Educators Association.
January 13 Kathy Leandro will
teach a course in Nurses
Assistance.
The class will meet daily from 9
to 1 through April 18.
This course is designed for per
sons interested in caring for people
and for persons who have com
petency in reading and comprehen
sion.
The classes will include work in
anatomy and physiology, nutrition
and food service, and other
hospital and home aspects of pa
ticnt care.
Students will be afforded clinical
experience and will be asked to
take part in demonstrations, group
presentations, and role playing.
Instructor Leandro, who is a
graduate of the S.C.C. nursing
program, owns and operates The
Open Arms Rest Home and has ex
tensive experience in hospital nurs
ing.
She envisions the course as a
means of providing the student
potential employment in health
care agencies.
For beginning sewing en
thusiasts, Truett Gibson, who
holds a BS in Home Economics
from Meredith College and has
taught sewing for four years, will
offer a sewing class.
Gibson plans to cover the basic
skills of clothing construction and,
if interest arises, to add a short sec
tion on home fashion sewing. This
course will begin January 7 and
meet Tuesday evenings through
February 25.
