On Monday evening at 6:30 the Womens' Missionary Union met for a Prayer Program at the home of Mrs. Henry L. Foster in St. Pauls. Mrs. Foster gave an interesting talk on missions, also gave an outline for our work during the week of prayer. Following the pro gram - a sit down Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, dressing - and all the trimmings was enjoyed by all. The place mats were printed with flags of countries of the world. The center of the table was beautifully decorated with three printed world balloons hung from the chandelier and a printed world balloon in a container with miniature figures of people of dif ferent countries around the balloon. Those present - Pearl Dew, Ver va McGougan, Lois Sumner, Dot McGougan, Mary Ammons, Mary Prevatt, Phyllis Blanton, Wanda Ammons, Betty Lou McGougan, Billie Sue Wooley and Lib Sumner. ? + ? Mrs. T.L. Shook and Miss Lynn Shook spent Thursday - Sunday in 95th birthday is celebrated Mrs., J.M. Pendergrass celebrated her 95th birthday on November 17 in the home of her daugther, Mrs. Reuben Webb. Celebrating with her were her other children, Mrs. Horace Walters and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Pendergrass, and hti grand children and great -grandchilden. An arrangement of pink carna tions, daisies and babies breath centered the refreshment table. The flowers were a gift from one of her grandsons. A great grandson gave her a corsage for the party. Birthday cake was served by Mrs. Horace Walters and Mrs. Charlie Pendergrass poured punch. The honoree received many gifts and cards from family and friends. Hendersonville with Mrs. Shook's brother, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hamilton. Sgt. W.H. Schell Jr. of Goldsboro spent Thanksgiving with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Schell. ? ? ? Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Beck visited their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Mayer, Jennifer and Stephanie in Ranger, Ga. Wednes day - Sunday. ? * ? Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bullard spent Thanksgiving with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Jennings, Sinclair and Cooper in Greensboro. ? * ? Visiting Mrs. W.E. Marley this week were her mother, Mrs. W.H. Hall of Rosehill, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Marley III of Isle of Palms, S.C., and Miss Beth Marley of Wilmington. * ? ? Spending several days with Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Cobb was their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jon Reid Lewis of Charlotte. This family joined Mr. Lewis' mother from Fairmont, in Lumberton for Thanksgiving dinner. Retires Ruby G. Harrell recently retired from the Raeford Plant of Burl ington Industries after 30 years unbroken service. She began her employment with the local facility on August 16, 1955 as a Mender in the Cloth Room Department. Harrell spent her entire tenure in the Cloth Room Department. Prior to her retire ment she worked as a Greige/ Inspector /Grader. ? ? ? Mr. and Mrs. Stcvie Ammons from Gastonia spent several days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Ammons and sister, Miss Wanda Ammons and other relatives. * * ? Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Thomp son's Thanksgiving guests were - Mr. and Mrs. Talmadge Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. George Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. Bohhy Thompson and Chris, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Ivey and Michael, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thompson and Marcus and Mr. and Mrs. William Langley and Jonathan of Elizabeth City. t * * Mr. and Mrs. Clarence H. Pless of Salisbury spent Thursday and Friday in Charlotte with Mr. and Mrs. Lanny Goode and daughter, Tracy. ? ? * Mrs. Edith Troutman of Statesville is visiting Mrs. Ann Troutman and family. ? * * Mr. and Mrs. Rob Schoch and Jeffrey of Vanceboro spent the Thanksgiving holidays with her mother, Mrs. Hunter Forbis. New contract Caroline Ansley of Charlotte, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Charles Ansley of Ant loch, has signed an exclusive modeling contract with Directions Talent Agency of Greensboro / Charlotte. Jill Joyce, President ' of the agency, announces that Caroline, a nursing student at Presbyterian Hospital, is taking a short leave of absence from her studies to pursue her model ing and writing interests. Engagement Announced Mr. and Mrs. John F. Surenson of Hope Mills announce the engagement of their daughter, Carol Alphin Jackson, of Raeford, to Shelhv Lawrence Calloway. The prospective bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Maude Calloway of Raeford. A December wedding is plan ned. Couple honored at shower On November 6, employees of United Carolina Bank honored Marilyn Miller and Charles Tapp with a dinner and bridal shower at the bank. Upon arrival, Marilyn was presented with a corsage. Special guests in addition to Marilyn and Charles were Mrs. William H. Tapp Jr. and Mrs Charles Miller. Dinner consisted of ham, potato salad, green beans, orange con gealed salad and hot rolls. Follow ing the meal, the group was enter tained with music and a special composition honoring the bride and groom provided by The Carolinians. Miscellaneous gifts were opened and then all retired to the dessert table to enjoy punch, nuts, cake and mints. Mrs. Tapp served cake and Mrs. Miller served punch. Mr. and Mrs. William Jones visited her family in Roxboro. Mr. and Mrs. David Howell of Clarksville visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Howell and Mr. and Mrs. George King, in Raeford last week. Mr. and Nfrs. John W. McPhaul traveled several days last week in Virginia and North Carolina with the Rev. and Mrs. Bill Heyward of Florida. Lew Upchurch was home from Fork Union Military Academy for Thanksgiving with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Upchurch, and his sisters. Staff Sgt. Freddie McPhaul, son of Mrs. Ester McPhaul of the Scurlock area of Hoke County, was on temporary assignment at Fort Bragg the last week of November. McPhaul, a 1978 graduate of Hoke County High School, is sta tioned at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. While at Fort Bragg, McPhaul was able to spend Thanksgiving with his family. Mrs. Janice Brock visited her daugther, Leigh, and Mrs. Linda McLeod visited her daughter, Laura, for the annual Mother Daughter Weekend at Peace Col lege on November 8 and 9. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Leach's family came for the weekend. Miss Debbie Leach of Winston-Salem, Miss Ginny Leach of Meredith College and Mr. and Mrs. Tim Hunter of Henderson visited. Mr. and Mrs. Graham Monroe visited Mr. and Mrs. Zan Monroe and their family in New Bern for Thanksgiving. Then Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Monroe and family came for the weekend with them in Raeford. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Dixon's guests for the holiday were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Forrester and their daughters, Meg and Sarah, from High Point and Mr. and Mrs. Mike McMulty and children, Becky, Timmie, and Jesse, from Dothan, Ala. Gifts being collected for Christmas project Christmas gifts for Hoke foster children will be collected by the recently reorganized Hoke County Foster Care Association. Christmas trees decorated with stars giving foster children's sex and size will be placed in Raeford at United1 Carolina Bank on Main Street and other locations. The stars can be removed from the tree by those who want to give gifts and return a gift to go under the tree. Collections will be completed by 5 p.m. on December 23.
