Local cartoonist develops housewife Several years ago, avid readers of The Newt Jewaal found a new personality within its pages. This likeable, frustrated character was Madilyn, The Hap py Housewife drawn by Mary B. Myers, a Hoke County resident ami part of the production depart ment at Dickson Press. Madilyn, as depicted by Myers, has served as a commentator on local happenings, a sounding board for pet peeves, and a cons tant reminder to the public, in general, that there definitely is a life to be found in robe, slippers and hair curlers. Since Madilyn's conception, her faithful followers have increased in number. There may even (now don't quote me on this) be those who buy a News-Journal just to check out Madilyn's weekly philosophy. Because her character has been so well accepted and to satisfy a desire to try a "little business ven ture", Myers decided to offer a line of Madilyn cards. She designed a set of several cards all featuring Madilyn on the front, in her usual attire. The cards a^e all purpose in nature and could be used for several humorous occa sions. The Madilyn cards are offered for sale at Howell Drugs and are displayed in a black and white shoe bag. "I chose black and white to match Madilyn ."explains Myers. "And I selected a shoe bag because all happy housewives have a shoe bag." Madilyn is drawn in black and white, her creator continues, because she is not a colorful per son. This however, is not how anyone would term the cards. The Madilyn cards show a different, more lively side to Madilyn. This may have been one reason Hoke Arts Scene By Sonya Falls Myers wanted to try something dif ferent with her creation. "Drawing Madilyn each week is fun," reports Myers, "but there are only so many things that I can do with her. One of my reasons for branching into cards was to free her up a little bit. "I had been talking about doing this, and I finally realized tha I had to go ahead and try it, that I was the only one who finally would get the thing off the ground." Living in a small town in no way restricted Myers' attempts at sales, she feels. "I have lived in more commer cial areas, but competition is much greater there. Here, I can talk directly to store owners and actual ly get them to consider my work," Myers states. "Also being closer to a larger city, like Fayetteville, always offers possible markets." Myers has distributed her cards in her home state of Florida but she has no true estimate of how they are selling. A Florida chapter of the Business and Professional Woman of Ameirca is considering her cards as a possible fund-raiser and she also has them for sale in Palm Beach. Recently, while attending a con vention in Orlando, Myers presented her business card to one of the speakers, who is a resident of Washington, D.C. The card, which has Madilyn depicted on it, was immediately recognized by the woman. "1 have received one of your cards," she announced to Myers. "1 was thrilled! Someone had actually bought one of the things and mailed it," says Myers. "That Dear Just taking a break from my busy schedule to let you know how life in the fast lone is going ... Madilyn n*r*? ms really made my day!" A possible venture for the future, Myers admits, may be a line of Madilyn Christmas cards. Perhaps they'll be ready for next Christmas. Meanwhile you may want to trek on down to Howell's and buy some of the last Madilyn cards they have in stock. There aren't many left, which should be a message to Myers: "Get busy! Your public is waiting!" Completes 25 Robert (Bob) D. Holcombe ( center ) recently completed 25 years of un broken service at the Burlington Industries Raeford Plant.
