New owner Tom McBryde (left) hands over the keys to the Raeford Lumber Company to William Clark on Thursday. Raeford Lumber is one of Hoke County's oldest businesses. After 56 years Raeford Lumber changes hands One of Raeford's oldest businesses changed hands last week. The Raeford Lumber Company was sold Thursday by Tom McBryde to William and Opal Clark of Laurinburg. The Clarks are owners of Red Springs Lumber and Supply Com pany. "I've been talking to Mr. McBryde and knew the business was going up for sale. We've been friends for years," William Clark said. A native of Raeford, Clark worked with Raeford Lumber for 17 years. Clark plans to add a showroom and additional items to the business. William "Buck" Maynard is the new manager of the company. The Raeford Lumber Company was founded in 1929 by Tom McBryde's father, Ryan, and associates W, Marshal Thomas and Younger Snead. At that time, the company was known as Raeford Lumber and Supply Com pany. Ryan McBryde was the son of Thomas McBryde, who was Hoke County's first representative to the North Carolina General Assembly. Ryan McBryde also represented Hoke County in the General Assembly by serving as senator from the 12th District. Both Thomas and Ryan McBryde owned sawmills in the early days of the company and kept the lumber yard and planer mill supplied with lumber. Building materials were sold locally and were also shipped to northern markets. In 1937, Ryan McBryde bought out his partners' interest in the organization, and incorporated as Raeford Lumber Company. Stockholders in the newly formed corporation included McBryde, R.L. McLeod and J.D. Sinclair. Tom McBryde became manager and part owner of the company in 1945. A native of Hoke County, McBryde is past director of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church. McBryde is married to the former Peggy McFadyen of Hoke County. "We are halfway through the fiscal year, and we've only taken in one third of the money we need for the year," Executive Director of Hoke County Children's Center Jackie Kicklighter said. "We're not about to close, but we're having trouble meeting our payroll and paying our bills," Kicklighter said. The handicapped pre-school program was fully funded when it began in 1974, but cutbacks in government spending are putting a strain on the center, Kicklighter said. "We're having to do more fund raisers and ask for help from the public," Kicklighter said. The children's center was the subject of a news story on Channel 1 1 Monday evening which centered on the center's current "financial crisis." Publicity is helpful because she wants the public to be informed as to what the center actually does, Kicklighter said. She also wants to make people aware of the center's plight. "People think we're just another day care center. We are a pre-school program for mentally retarded handicapped children," Kicklighter said. Twenty children, ranging in age from birth to five years old, are cared for at the center from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on week days, accord ing to Kicklighter. The children are from both Cumberland and Hoke counties. "Things have changed over the years," Ruth Pecora, chairman of the board of the Hoke County Association for the Developmen tally Disabled, said on Tuesday. "Money comes from various sources, and it's according to the children you have as to how much money you get for certain things," Pecora said. "This year it seems like its going to be tougher to make our budget," Pecora added. Pecora said various fund raisers are being planned for the center, and that service organizations within the community have always helped the center. "We hope we're not going to ever close. Things have always managed to work out before, and we hope they will again," Pecora said. "We've been lucky. Somebody has always come through to help us out," Pecora added.
