Tom McBryde and J.A. Webb are veteran commissioners who were re-elected in November. County manager T.B. Lester is re-appointed. Charles Hostetler is again county attorney. Elizabeth Livingston, co-worker of Archie Byrne, formertax collector, is named assistant tax collector to work with Bryan Thornburg. Architects have examined the Upchurch School auditorium and believe it can be saved. Wooden trusses bowed, but did not harm the walls. So the roof can be removed, the architects say, and wooden trusses can he replaced with steel ones. On another matter. Highway Commissioner John F. McNair HI says he’s agreeable to closing part of Bethel Road where children must cross from Hoke High School to Gibson School for class changes. Shiloh Presbyterian Church holds a note-burning ceremony for its two-story addition. Burning the note are elder Albert Seaford, build ing fund treasurer Mrs. D.R. Huff Jr. and planning committee chairman Harry Thomberg. The Pacihc Mills division of BurUngton Industries is renamed Burhngton Worsted. The annual Christmas parade will begin at 5 p.m. Friday. Santa is expected to arrive on a surrey, accompanied by three bands and several other marching units. All Raeford stores will be open after the parade until 8 p.m. After 43 years of serving Ra eford, Israel Mann is going out of business. In a full-page ad, the owners say it is illness forcing them from business. “We hope to show our deep appreciation,’ ’ the ad reads, “by selhng all of our merchandise at fantastically low prices! Nothing will be held back. The clothing store, shoe store and upstairs will be for rent. Complete with air condition ing and heating unit, including our cash register, tables, cabinets and all fixtures.” 25 Years Ago December 5,1990 The Hoke Sheriff’s Department is reorganized, a shakeup that sends Charles Hostetler is sworn in as county attorney. narcotics specialist Jim Curtis pack ing. Curtis returns from a hunting vacation in Ohio to find a letter that reads, “You are no longer with the Sheriff’s Department.” He calls the firingpolitical. Chief Deputy Jimmy Riley is also demoted to chief jailer. Captain Weaver Patterson is shifted to the Hoke-Roheson Drug Task Force. Detective Wayne Gardner is promoted to chief deputy and Det. Greg Beard is promoted to captain. Danny Wilson is promoted from sergeant to detective. Mike Under wood moves up from patrolman to detective. “I felt like it was needed to have a more efficient department,” Sheriff Alex Norton says. James E. Murdock, acting po lice chief since the death of Zeke Wiggins, is named permanent chief. Murdock is originally from Harnett County where he worked construction. Wyatt Upchurch and Neill McPhatter are re-elected unani mously to serve as the Hoke Commission chairman and vice- chairman, respectively. Hoke County plans to foreclose on the fire-damaged Page Trust B uilding at Main Street and El wood Avenue. The owners, Julian Wright and Lucille Sessoms, have not paid taxes on the building for four years, and the threatened foreclo sure is moving Wright to seek sole ownership in order to renovate the stmcture. Wright and Sessoms also owe taxes to Raeford. The county has held off foreclosure because it doesn’t want the building. County Manager Barry Reed says. T.B.
