February 10, 2016 Brov\£in r 47 Years Ago February 13,1969 Hoke High Principal Raz Autry tells a group of people—^he had asked only optimistic people to attend—that he plans to approach the Hoke Board of Education about building anew stadium atthe school. Autry, John Pecora, Jim Banks and Landwood Simpson had already been on trips to Sanford, Lumber- ton and East Guilford to inspect their new stadiums and have plans from two of the schools for those at the meeting to inspect. John Scott Poole says he represents a group of conservatives who have some questions about cost. A committee is appointed to begin finding ways to raise money. The committee is Leonard Frahm (chairman), Wil liam Poole, Palmer Willcox, Mrs. Ed Murray, J.D. McAllister, the Rev. Thomas Walker, Pete Sawyer, Dr. R.M. Jordan and C.D. Bounds. McLeod Cross Road area and across town in the South Freedom Church area. Sheriff Dave Barrington says, if there’s any mail in the boxes, the vandals may have committed a federal offense. The year 1968 is called the Hoke Rescue Squad’s most successful ever. The squad answers calls for 134 auto accidents, four house fires, three auto fires, seven ambulance mns, two farm accidents, and two accidents at houses. The squad also gets called out once for riot control. 25 Years Ago February 13,1991 Some 100 people gather to cheer on 32 Cub Scout Pack 404 Pinewood Derby contestants as they race home-built mode cars.Jeff Upchurch, son of Mr. and Mrs.Wyatt Upchurch, is grand champion and receives the award from Mayor McLean. Dave Barrington Jr., son of Sheriff and Mrs. Barrington, gets second place. (Maybe another drop of oil, Dave, reads The News-Journal caption.) Ronnie Ellis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Ellis, gets Best Craftsmanship. Runner-up in craftsmanship is Roy Wood Jr. Cindy Moore uses an axe to break a window and save her child from a pickup that rolled into apond behind her home near Davis Bridge Road. Her son Tommy had put the tmck into neutral as she returned to her house to fetch a pair of boots. Morris writes aboutthe new pipe organ at the Presbyterian Church and says it “sounds fine to me,’’ though adjustments will still be made. He continues, “I don’t know anything about music, but guess this is the same as fine mning a color TV set.’’ One deputy is fired and one quits, bringing the total to five gone since Alex Norton is reelected sheriff. One deputy says she supported op ponent Jim Madden in the election, but Norton says she’s fired because “she just wouldn’t work.” The FBI may be brought in to investigate the uprooting and pil ing up of some 50 mailboxes in the Sam C. Morris writes another friend dies this week. Eli Shankle, former chairman of the Hoke Com missioners, is the second former chairman to die in 1969. Fulford McMillan died in January. These undefeated wrestlers are Richarc Davis (left) and George McFayden. Also undefeated but not available for the photo is Ronnie Branch. Sales of Girl Scout Cookies are in full swing. Mayor H.R.
