THE QUIET CORNER “That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all Godliness and Honesty.”—I Tim. 2:2. REV. WALTER E. I9ENHOUR Hiddenite, N. C, THOSE WHO ARE GIVING THEIR LIVES FOR AMERICA Those who are giving their lives for America are your sons and mine We love them. They were once infants in our arms. Wu rocked them in the cradle, we fed them at our tables, we prayed for them around our fa mily alters, we took them to church, we clothed them and educated them. W e labored and toiled for years to enable iliem to reach manhood. They are borne of out bone and flesh. Thev are near and dear to out hearts. Their dear mothers suf fered to bring them into the world, and they nursed and cared for them during infancy, and watched over them through childhood, and helped them on in fo manhood. They are all some body's sons. Many of them no father a*d mother today, as theit parents have passed out of this life into the great beyond 1 he love and prayers of father and mother have ceased, as then bodies lie in some silent grave, j t). that we may breather lot these dear fatherless soldiers a spirit of prayer and love them fully anu freely. 1 his is a sad day to multitudes ot us It is sad to see our dear .sons leave for the training camps, leave for different states, leave lor the islands at the sea and t'nr far distant shores. it sad to parents, sad to wives and husbands, anu sau to sweetheatt., as thousands are marching away. The cost is faMou- No ^ S.S he made a slave' to ungodly rulers. ' However. our freedom « K®' in., to-cost more than the lives of our sons and billions of dollars in money and property; it is go inp to cost deep repentance on the part of our country, and turn ing away from evil, sin an wickedness: It is going to cost wordlv pleasure and giving up that which is cursing us in many ways. It is going to mean a mighty turning back to God. to the church and Sunday school, and to the old family altar and t„ the praver meeting. W.e have been on a rampage long enough. Millions of our people have for saken and forgotten God hence our suffering and sorrow. M e had better be turning hack iu God as a nation. Our churches ought to be filled with people who are repenting their way to God, and thi.se who are calling upon God to nrotect and save us from the powers of the enemy and iiom the loss of everything that is near and dear to our hearts. While our dear sons are giving their time and talent and lives for our country, we as parents, wives, children, sweethearts, as sociates and friends ought to be earnestly and sincerely engaged in prayer in their behalf, and in behalf of our freedom. This war is going to be won mainly through prayer. It is up to us to pray, pray, PRAY! O how America needs to repent and pray, give up her sins and seek God’s face! Surely this is an absolute fact beyond the shadow of a doubt. Think of those who are giving lives for America, and the least we can do is to pray for them. They are depending upon our' prayers. Let’s not fail them. Tens of thousands of the dear soldier boys today are not Chris tians. How sad this fact! We ought to write them good letters, telling them the sweet old story of Jesus and His love. We should urge them to repent, accept Je sus as their personal Savior and be ready for all that stands ahead. We ought to send them good tracts, good literature and good books. It would be a wonderful plan to subscribe for a good pa per for them. If they don’t have time to read much through the week, they can read on Sunday. Many of them could be reached with the Gospel, or brought to Christ with the right means. Some of them in sin have tender hearts. They are responsive. They feel the need of Christ. They know their lives are going to be tremendously endangered. Why not write them good letters and tell them we are praying for i their precious souls to be saved and for their return home again? If many of them get back it will be in answer to prayer. It pays to pray. Not all the dear soldieis are sinful. It is true that there are some “rough necks among them, and some who arc veiy wicked, but not all. Many of them are godlv, righteous, noble and man ly. They pray, read their Bible, return thanks for their food, love the truth, love the right, love God supremely and love all mankind. Some of the best and choicest young men on the Am- j erican soil are among our sol diers. God bless them, keep them and make them a blessing. They have a great opportunity of win ning others to Christ. They should pray for those who are sinful, dissipated and wicked. They ought to warn them against sin’s destructive way. They should tell them of life’s better way They mighUinfluence many, many to seek the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved It is pos sible. It is a glorious and golden opportunity that our Christian soldiers have. Why not use it? You can be a soul-winner in the training camps and maybe ou the battleshops. in the airplanes and on the battle fronts. Tell your fellow soldiers that Jesus loves them and wants to save their pre cious souls. Tell them there is a hell to shun and a heaven to gain, and if they miss heaven they have missed everything worth Just the other day I had a very encouraging letter from one of our dear soldiers. Here is what1 he said: “Dear brother iu Christ:—I have been reading your sermons in the Union Re publican and enjoy them. I am sending you five dollars of my tithe money. I am a Christian, but I need your prayers. May God bless you in your work. Just a friend " This soldier’s address is: Private Fred C. Ferguson. 42 M. P., B. N„ Fort Leeven .voith. Kansas. It you want to write him I am sure he would ap preciate it. I wrote him a good letter and sent him some tracts May God bless him and make him a real blessing to his fellow sol diers. I greatly appreciate the live dollars he sent me, as this is unusual with a soldier. However, a dear young man in the marines sent me some offerings some two or three times. He was a noble youth. The last I heard of him he was at home. Thank God for soldiers who pray and trust God, and who are willing to give part of their means to God's cause instead of spending it all upon themselves. No doubt' many waste their money for tobacco and strong drink, and for evils that are hurt ful to soul and body. Somehow and someway this dear soldier has had the light on tithing, which is a blessing to anyone who prac tices it. and is a blessing to oth ers. If he can and does tithe his income in order to advance the God always tdC-sses a tither gra ciously and abundantly. When one comes to God in need tem porarily or spiritually, and can truthfully tell God that the tithes are in, he certainly can de pend upon God to come to his assistance. He can stand upon Malachi 3:10,11, and Philippines 4:H>. I sincerely believe he can plead the blood of Jesus and stand upon God’s promises with more faith and far greater pro tection from the shot and shell of the enemy, for God has promised to lebuke the devourer. Halle lujah. I don’t know when I hare ever appreciated an offering more than I did the one which came at a time when J needed it. No from this dear soldier. It came dou|>t God moved on his heart to do this. So I am praying for him and for the dear soldiers, will you join me in prayer? Men trt djriac ftr Um Frar Fth4mu. In his speech of December 8, Generalissimo Franco stated that .he post war world must be either i Communist world or a Facist j world. The Liberal theory—and j by Liberal he meant democratic, not socialistic — has dry rotted and is now making1 it’s last stand, according to the Spanish dic The principal weakness of Senor Franco's argument lies in the fact that, having never lived in w'hat we call a “free world,” he has no knowledge of what real freedom means. His conception | is a world managed by an indivi dual or by a minority party, sup posedly for the benefit of the ma jority. Supermen just don’t exist today—except in the funnies-nyr have they ever ex isted; and this fact has made ne cessary the creation of a system, called Democracy, in which the majority of the people whose wel fare is at stake, have the final say.
