THE CAROLINA UNION PARMER Thursday, August 31st, 191I' f: ' I ' m sx 1 ^ For Farm-Life Schools. Dr. Alexander, President of the North Carolina Farmers’ Union, is a strong advocate of the farm life school, and is doing good work in favor of the establishment of such schools in every county of the State ' A\'e are glad to know that the great organization which he represents is behind him in this effort, and as a result we may expect to see ten of these schools established in North Carolina, where the legislature has provided for them- President Alex ander declares that ignorance of the farming classes is one of the great- / est curses of the commonwealth. Ignorance of the farming classes brings economic loss to all classes. Anything that raises the intelligence of the agricultural classes benefits all classes. Speaking of this, Presi dent Alexander says: “Every man who has a clear and correct conception of economic con ditions as they are today, must know that continued and increased prosperity in all lines of^. industry dependent on a more intelligent and efficient agricultural and laboring classes. Ignorance is the greatest tax on our commonwealth. It is an incubus that is clogging the wheels of progress in all lines. And unfortunately we find the largest percentage of ignorance in the class es that produce, primarily, 85 per cent of the wealth of our country and on which the prosperity of all other classes must ultimately de pend. Ignorance is a very unstable foundation on which to attempt to erect a great superstructure; and yet that is just what the whole business world is doing. There fore, it is not surprising that the wise business men are beginning to realize that ignorance and ineffi ciency of the producing classes the prosperity of their business.— Concord Times. Mr. Plyler Resigns. At a meeting of the State Ex ecutive Committee, which was held at Greensboro last week, Mr. P. P. W. Plyler, tendered his resignation as a member of the committee, and Mr. C. C. Wright, of Wilkes county, was elected in his stead. Mr- Plyler has served on this com mittee since the State Union was organized and has been a very val uable man to the organization and his resignation was accepted with *r6luctance by the committee. The new Executive Committee is as fol lows: I. P. Coggins, Chairman; Dr, J. T. Smith, Secretary; W. H. Moore, T. D. Brown, C. C. Wright. Mr. Plyler tendered his hesignation in order to accept the cashiership of the new bank at Marshville- WANTED—To sell you your Meal and Hulls. See or write us before you buy. J. Flem Johnson Com pany, Gastonia, N. C- Flint Hill, No. 639, Randolph County. The Carolina Union Farmer: As I have seen nothing in our valuable paper from our local I will say just a few words. We have at this time only 22 members, several having united with other locals nearer to them. We are trying to do business through our County and State Agents, but we find there are no favors in store for the farmers only as they compel recognition by organization. The members of our local all favor the suggestion made by someone in the Carolina Union Farmer that w,e should establish a fertilizer factory for the manufact ure of our own goods. If the sev eral factories for the manufacture of fertilizer in North Carolina are realizing fair profits then it is evi dent that we would save much hy establishing a factory for making our own fertilizer. A contribution of two or three dollars each, from every member of our organization might make us more independent of the fertilizer trust.
