End Youth Conference At Statesville Today Delegations from many towns in western North Carolina are attend ing a Youth conference which got under way at Statesville yesterday and is to continue through today. The conference, which is now in the stage of organization, is to b e made up of young peoples' evangelistic clubs. A number of speeches were deliv ered Wednesday, social activities and a watch night program to con clude the meet today, which is to feature a speech on the subject, "As the Old Year Passes to New", by Claude Farrell, member of the fac ulty of Mountain Park Institute. The conference is being held un der the ausplcles of the Statesville Young Peoples' Evangelistic club, and it is the first of its kind ev»r held. Joan Crawford, Clark Gable Show At Lyric The attraction at the Lyric theatre starting today Is "Possessed," in which Joan Crawford and Clark Cable have the leading roles. This picture, which was adapted from the Edgar Selwyn stage success, "The Mirage," is believed to be Miss Crawford's most ambitious effort in the straight dramatic field. Wallace Ford, New York stage player; Skeets Galligher,well-known talkie comedian; Frank Conroy, Marjorie White, John Miljan and Clara Blandick are important mem bers of the supporting cast. Pleasant Hill News The Glad Girl's Sunday school class of the Pleasant Hill Sunday school gave a most enjoyable Christ mas program on Christmas eve night. Following the program they honored their teacher. Miss Mary Burcham, with a shower of miscel laneous gifts. Mrs. D. G. Gilliam entertained her Sunday school class of Junior girls at her home Thursday afternoon from 2 until 4 o'clock. Mrs. Gilliam was assisted in entertaining by Miss Mary Burcham. Just before the de parture of the guestß, Santa Claus arrived and presented each guest with a lovely gift. Miss Mary Burcham entertained the Young Peoples department of the Pleasant Hill Sunday school at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Gilliam Friday evening. Th e entire membership of the department was present. A medley of games furnish ed entertainment for the guests. Miss Mary Burcham returned to Boone Tuesday to resume her stu dies at Appalachian State Teachers College, after spending the Christ mas holidays with Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Gilliam.
