"Buy Now" Program Is Underway; Local Men Are Appointed (Continued from Page One) stances they would have bought in recent years. Bear In mind that jnat a little more spending by eacb family in Elkin and vicinity will make all the difference in the -world to the business Interests of this city. "It should be borne in mind that this is a nation-wide movement to stimulate buying between now. and the end of the year. This meaiu that our local merchants are not only going to profit by our cam paign but our local industries also will derive benefits from the stim ulated demand for products manu factured in Elkin. And the agricul tural section will be helped, too, because increased business in the cities and towns is bound to create a heavier demand for the things the farmer has to sell." "We know that business can be greatly stimulated by the . plans now being put into effect. Nobody is being asked to make any partic ular sacrifices. To buy now is man ifestly self-interest because prices Are bound to go higher. Therefore, I feel that we are simply doing the logical and obvious thing in accept ing the Government's invitation to Join in the present campaign. Mr. Armfield stated that every possible medium would be employed to mobilize public opinion. These include display ads, and special articles in newspapers, radio talks, motion pictures, public speakers, posters and stickers. It is the ex pectation of the N. R. A. that every line of business will be tremen dously stimulated during the weeks before the end of the year, and, with this momentum added to the various other phases of the recov ery program, the upward economic trend will continue until conditions approximating normal have been reached. •-* Heart Attack Fatal To Boonville Man Jefferson Davis Dobbins, 73, af fectionately known to hundreds of friends throughout Yadkin county as "Uncle Jeff", died suddenly Mon day morning at his home in Boon ville from a heart attack. The FAMILY DOCTOR (By John Joseph Gaines, M. D.) DEPRESSION'S TOLL There is no doubt that the ter rible stringency of "times" in the last five years has borne—is yet bearing its deadly fruit. We doc tors know. We who watch oyer the welfare of so many human beings. This week a young man—of thir ty-five—came to consult me ... a case of complete breakdown. Of such a severity that one practitioner believed he had "T. 8." in a hip jQint. Could not even think of do ing any work—had just left his bed when hiß relatives brought him to see me. History of almost working night and day, to make a livlag with something besides if possible . . . toil —toil —all day—late and early hours, bolting meals to save time . . . some years of the grind—then a lift on a heavy object—a "snap" of something in the back —down and out! Each time a rest in bed and suit able treatment got him up and around —Immediate return to stren uous duty—a linotype worker in a rural newspaper office—bending ov er the machine—strain on the eyes -—nerves —digestive apparatus—eli mination arrested—another "knock out" from a slight lift—to bed again ... a series of rounds. Tuberculosis of the hip? No. Germs? O, the hunt for them!! The entire set of thirty-two teeth were extracted —but it didn't help the trouble that was ALL BELOW THE WAIST-LINE ... He has a new and very perfect set of store teeth —and the same old sciatic neu ritis? He has lost thirty pound# in weight; do you wonder? He b, as he says,."mighty near to a skeleton." Nothing about him is normal. Must we hint of tuberculosis or cancer? No. Here is a young man worn out and broken down by hard work— a diffuse neuritis is coming—HE MUST REST FIRST. He has gained twa pounds in w«ight, I note this morning. He will recover, with rest and diet. Odell Hamby, Aged 3, Passed Away Sunday Odell Hamby, three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Hamby, of this city, passed away on Sunday, following a brief- illness from diph theria and membraneous croup. Fu neral rites were held from the home Monday afternoon at 2:30 and in terment was in the Elkin Valley cemetery. The child is survived by hiß parents and a small brother and sister.
