YADKIN CATTLE WIN
MANY FINE PRIZES
Many Are Adjudged
Winners At Winston
And State Fairs
Yadkin county as a source of
quality dairy cattle for .both pro
duction and type and its dairying
possibilities have recently been
brought before the general public
at exhibitions and through daily
records kept on the cattle in produc
tion. Two herds have taken a lead
In this work, that of M. F. Shore
and A. A. Burgess, of Buck Shoals
, township.
At the Forsyth Fair and at the
State Fair show cows from the Shore
herd' took sixteen prizes, ten of
which were firsts, Senior and Grand
Champion cow and Junior Champion
female. At the State Guernsey Cat
tle Show six placements were given
them. A production record and but
ter fat contest was won at the For
syth Fair by the cow, Dawn of
Laurel Brook.
For the month of October Mr.
Shore's herd averaged 1117 pounds
of milk and 65.6 pounds of fat or
an average per cow for each day of
the month of 4.2 gallons of milk
and 2.5 pounds of butter.
A sire. Yeoman's Highboy, pur
chased from the Shore farm, heads
the prize herd of A. A. Burgess.
Thiß sire won first place in his class,
Senior and Grand Champion for
bulls in all breeds at both the
Forsyth and the State Fair, also
first place at the Guernsey Cattle
Show for the State. The different
judges, Guernsey breeders and
spectators were high in their praise
for the Burgess sire which was
ahown along with the Shore herd.
He was pronounced to be one of the
leading Guernsey bulls of the Uni
ted States. His sire. Valor's Yeo
man and grandsire, Langwater Val
or, have already proved to be meri
torious sires of the breed. His
dam, Dawn of Laurel Brook, has
been grand champion at several
shows and pronounced by a leading
Guernsey judge as being the most
beautiful Guernsey cow in the State
for the year 1932.
Mr. Burgess will test daughters
of his herd sire as they come into
production in order to test his pro
duction quality. It is expected by
fanciers and farmer breeders of
Guernseys that the Burgess herd
pire will win many laurels during his
life for type and production. It
might be said here on behalf of
bis owner, that he is a man who
goes after results in whatever line
entered, therefore it is certain that
the merits of Yoeman's Highboy
will not be overlooked.
Both of these Guernsey breeders
are farmers commonly termed "Just
average farmers" with ambitious
aims and untiring efforts, quick to
take advantage of natural advan
tages and improved methods. Both
were reared on the farm in the same
vicinity where grand, wholesome
principals and ideals were instilled
within their minds. A desire to
some day give proof of the advan
tages and possibilities of rural life
and its adventures was aroused in
their minds in early boyhood days.
When a young man Mr. Shore
went west where he stayed for a
decade or more at which time he re
turned to Yadkin county bought a
farm and began to stock it with
pure bred Guernsey cattle that be
ing about 1926, purchasing the first
registered female in 1927. Mr. Bur
gess, a neighbor only a few miles
away, had secured several high
type Guernseys eome years before.
1929 a young bull for herd sire
was purchased by Mr. Shore from a
nationally known herd at a fancy
Bum which was to be used in not
only bringing up and improving
milk cows on the Shore farm but
those of his fellow farmers in the
whole county and adjoining coun
ties. A modern farmstead was
.laid out and developed water, lights,
Bilo, were added as a part of the
regular farm improvement program.
Pasture for grazing, alfalfa, lespe
deza, and other hay crops were
planted and constitute a part of the
regular cropping system.
1930-31 three young cows were
tested for production record in clasß
F. Two broke state record, the lat
ter took the record from former.
1930 Dawn of Laurel Brook took
first prize at county show and se
cond place at Piedmont Dairy Show.
1932 she was shown at the State
Guernsey Show, won first place in
her class, first in A. R. cows, Ju
nior Champion, best fitted cow at
the show, won silver cup as Grand
Champion female.
Scarcely a day passes without the
announcement from some business
houses of national magnitude, that
it is turning again to newspaper ad
vertising to reach the public.
