Max Anthony Is Ho«t At His Home
at Hamptonville
Honoring a number of guests, Max
Anthony was host at an enjoyable
weiner roast at his home in Hamp
tonville Saturday evening.
Out-of-town guests were: Misses
Hazel and Ruth Osborne, of Elkin,
Mrs. Bessie Renegar and daughter,
Miss Alma Renegar, Perry Somers
and Henry Renegar, all of Winston-
Salem.
Miss Lillard Compliments Guests
Complimenting her guests. Miss
Marion Kelly Townsend, of Red
Springs and Miss Johnny Kelly, of
Raleigh, Miss Sarah Kelly Lillard
entertained at a delightful informal
dance at her home on Gwyn Avenue
Monday evening. The guest list in
cluded about forty members of the
high school and college set.
Bonander-Paul Engagement
Announced
Interesting to friends is the fol
lowing announcement which ap
peared in the Wilmington Sunday
paper: Mr. and Mrs. Carl Augustus
Powers, of Brookwood, Wilmington,
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Miss Irma Louise Bonan
der, and James Kincheloe Paul, son
of Mrs. Etta Ring Paul and the late
William Edmond Paul, of Elkin. The
wedding will take place in the early
autumn.
Mrs. Jones Holcomb Is Club Hostess
Friday Evening
* Mrs. Jones Holcomb was hostess
to the members of her book club at
her home on Bridge street Friday
evening, with only club members in
attendance. Three tables were placed
for hearts. In the final count of
scores Mrs. L. I. Wade received the
high score award and the consola
tion prize fell to Mrs. J. A. Carpen
ter.
At the conclusion of the play an
appetizing collation in two courses
was served.
Mr. and Mrs. Roth Eentertain at
Bridge-Dinner Thursday
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Roth were
hosts at a most delightful bridge
dinner at their home on Terrace
Avenue Thursday evening, with cov
ers placed for forty guests. The low
er floor of the spacious home was
thrown ensuite for the reception of
the guests. Following the elaborate
dinner bridge was enjoyed. Mrs.
Hardin Graham and Ruohs Pyron
won the high score awards and the
consolation prizes fell to Mrs. Harold
Messenger and J. R. Poindexter.
Out-of-town guests were Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Messenger, of Hartford,
fconn.; Miss Olivia Abemethy, of
Hickory; Mrs. C. A. Crews, of Hend
erson, and Mrs. Mozelle Reardon, of
Bluefield, West Virginia.

Tuesday
One of the most delightful social
events of the week was the luncheon
given by Miss Frances Grier at her
home on Bridge street Tuesday. At
the beautifully appointed tables cov
ers were placed for fourteen guests.
Gorgeous late summer flowers were
used to enhance the beauty of the
appointments.
Following the luncheon two tables
were placed for bridge and one for
hearts. In the bridge competition
Miss Ola Church won the high score
award and Miss Thorburn Lillard
won the prize in the heart games.
Mrs. Paul Price and Mrs. Harry
Barker, Jr., recent brides, and Miss
Marion Townsend of Red Springs,
who is the guest of Miss Thorburn
Lillard, were each given lovely re
membrances.

Mrs. Whitaker Entertains Garden
Club at Luncheon Thursday
Mrs. W. W. Whitaker was a
charming hostess on Thursday when
she entertained the members of the
Yadkin Valley Club and several ad
ditional guests at a delightful
luncheon at her home on Church
street. SmaJ' .tables were arranged
for the luncheon guests, with covers
laid for sixteen. Vases of summer
flowers were used as centerpieces for
the tables and elsewhere in the liv
ing room and library.
Following the luncheon Mrs. H. P.
Graham presented an interesting
progrpm on "Trees". She was as
sisted by Mrs. Mason Lillard and
Mrs. H. C. Salmons. The conclud
ing feature was a vocal solo, "Trees",
by Mrs. E. G. Click, accompanied at
the piano by Mrs. J. 11. Beeson.

Pegram Reunion
The annual Pegram family reun
ion will be held Sunday September
2, 1934, at Gideon Grove church,
two miles north of the village of
Stokesdale. The program will begin
at 10:30 a. m. Relatives of the
family are invited to bring their
friends and a well-filled basket.

will feature the all-day program.

Yadkin Event In Honor
of Champion Guern
sey Cow
The Yadkin Guernsey Field Day
will be held September 1 on the farm
of M.. F. Shore in honor of the new
state champion Guernsey cow, Hart-
J zell's Gertrude's Verarose, number
230986, which produced 943.6 pounds
i butter fat and 16078.5 pounds milk
over a period of a year.
John Arey, of State College will
deliver an address at 11 a. m. on
"Present Day Dairy Farming"; at
11:40 Mr. Jeter, agricultural exten
sion editor, will talk on "Dairy
Farming Under the AAA Program";
At 12:10 W. W. Fitzpatrick, milk
marketing specialist for the Guern
sey Cattle club will address the
farmers on milk marketing; at 2 p.
m. Professor Ruffner, of State Col
lege, will lecture on selecting an ideal
milk cow, after which he will point
out the major factors to be consid
ered in making such a selection.
All four gentlemen are very able
speakers and are expected to make
the occasion one of much interest.
Farmers are urged to make arrange
ments to be present-for the meeting.
The Shore herd of Guernseys will
be well worth seeing. During the last
few years his cows have taken many
first prizes in the show ring for their
fancy qualities as well as for their
high production records.
Cockerham Reunion
Sunday, August 26, the home of
Martin Cockerham was the scene
of the Cockerham family reunion,
held in honor of Mr. and Mrs. M. W.
Cockerham, and Mr. and Mrs. N. M.
Cockerham, of lowa, who are visit
ing relatives here.
At noon a delicious and bountiful
dinner was served buffet style and
the afternoon was spent informally
renewing old acquaintances.

Mine Ridge News
The Mine Ridge Baptist church
held its regular communion service
Sunday. Rev. Ford Walker, the pas
tor, was assisted by Rev. Hardin
Brown, of Austin. The services were
attended by a large crowd of people
and dinner was served on the
grounds at the noon hour.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Cheek, of' Du
rham, were week-end visitors here.
The Mine Ridge school is sche
duled to open September 5. Patrons
are urged to send their children on
the opening day.
Of interest to friends in this com
munity is the marriage of Miss Al
ma Lowe of Mine Ridge to Paul E.
Norman, of Thurmond. They were
quietly married Saturday afternoon
and after a brief honeymoon they
will be at home at Thurmond.
