Thursday, May 16, 1935 P(H€ NiCS : By ALAN BROWNING, Jr. THIS BUSINESS OF BEING A PUBLIC SERVANT Of course we don't know, but it's been told us on good au thority that Dick Freeman went to Raleigh the day of the town election to get sworn in as town commissioner. We have it from Dave Brendle and "Chevrolet" Baker that Mr. Freeman figured that being as how Henry Dobson went to Raleigh when he got elected to office, he ought to go too, al though Mr. Freeman swears he went to Raleigh on business. Oh, well, this business of being a public servant is enough to get folks mixed up and confused. If Mr. Freeman was of the opinion that Raleigh was the place to get sworn in, that's his' own affair. Raleigh perhaps has' as good swearerinners as any place, and with all the senators and rep resentatives running round loose down there as they are, why no doubt it 'made Mr. Freeman feel more at home and in his element. The other four commissioners and the new mayor, it appears, decided that an old fashioned hometown swear-in was sufficient, and held up NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE SALE OF LAND STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA, COUNTY OF SURRY. THE FEDERAL LAND BANK OF COLUMBIA, PLAINTIFF, vs. J. J. RICHARDS, ADMR. OF T. P. BLEDSOE, ANER BLEDSOE AND OTHERS, DEFENDANTS. Every deposit not forfeited or ac cepted will be promptly returned to the maker. This the 22nd day of April, 1935. ROBT. A. FREEMAN, 6-16 Commissioner. their right hand here. And it's probable that at the next meeting, if Mr. Freeman doesn't decide it is to be held in Raleigh and go rush ing off there, they'll give him a hometown swear-in too. • * * CHAIN LETTERS Have you a little chain letter 1n your home? If not then you'll have to be content with the depression and let other more fortunate folks rise to the heights with the Pros perity Club. So far we've received only a few and we're glad of .it. We don't like the word "chain." It's too sugges tive of the chain gang. It's hard to figure where this chain letter business is going to end up. It will probably end up like a toy balloon which has been blown too tight—"pouf." Personally, we are more in favor of a lot of letters with dimes in them than we are in the original letters that are supposed to be sent out. As yet we ain't got nary a dime. How about YOU sending us a dime sometime? • * * THIS AND THAT We get more cussings for other folks' ideas. Everybody with a pet peeve usually brings it to us with the suggestion we put it in this col umn. Then we get the cussing. For instance, we understand that a certain party has threatened to wring our neck for mentioning (and with the highest praise, we thought) the chicken and rabbit pens on the vacant lot adjoining The Tribune. As a result of what was said here (maybe), one pen has been torn down, but the most beautiful and distinctive pen—the one which can be seen the best from all sides, and is the most artistic collection of broken goods boxes, rusty wire and other scrap pile rubbish —still re mains. And because we mentioned this at the request of not less than half a dozen citizens of this immediate vicinity who do not possess an ar tistic eye, and who have no real sense of beauty nor a true appre ciation of it, we have to expose our scrawny neck to wringing. , Yea, brethren, it's a hard life! Last year we picked Tat Davis as the best all-round player on the Chatham team and the first thing we knew Tat had gone into a hit ting slump. Then this year we men tioned Charlie Gough, and ever since he's been dropping one now and then. Seems like the boys just won't co-operate. Charlie Brewer's chef, otherwise known as Tut, was telling us the other day that Will Holcomb spent the entire morning Friday chasing a fly about the store which he sus picioned as having stolen a grain of sugar. And Hugh Royall was sorely puz zled the other morning, too, about a ham he bought and took to Mr. Holcomb to have it cut in two. It was cut in two all right, but Hugh is puzzled because when he placed the two ends together upon reach ing home, they didn't fit. At least that's what he says. Patronize Tribune advertisers.
