Thursday, August 8, 1935 Mr. and Mrs. David Brendle and family are spending this week at Shatley Springs. Miss Ruth Atkinson spent the lat ter part of the week in Winston- Salem, the guest of friends. Carl Chappell left Friday for New York City, where he will spend a week attending to business matters. Mrs. E. C. Kirkman will leave Sat" urday for Jamestown, to visit her ' daughter, Mrs. L. L. Hendrix. Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Ashby and baby are spending this week in Mount Airy, visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Somers spent • the week-end in CHapel Hill the guests of Mrs. Somers* mother. Mrs. Richard Chatham is spending this week in Statesville, the guest of her mother, .Mrs. R. E. Armfield. Mrs. J. Coke Marion spent Friday , in Mount Airy, the guest of Mrs. Sparger Robertson. v Mr. and Mrs. J. A.'Carpenter and children spent the week-end the guests of Mr. Carpenter's parents, at their home in Charlotte. Miss Carolyn Lillard is spending several days in Dunn, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Smith, the lat ter her sister. Miss Reba Cheek, of Cycle, "is spending this week the guest of Mrs. Shirley Chteek, at her home in Jonesville. Mrs. T. G. Harris and family and Mrs. Grady Harris and family spent Wednesday in Winston-Salem, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Harris. R. F. Jester returned to his home in Jonesville Friday, following a L visit of several weeks to relatives in New Castle, Indiana. Mrs. Harriet Sisk, of Athens, Ga., spent the week-end here the guest of Mrs. Harry Barker at her home on Bridge street. Miss Bet,tie Allen left Monday for New London, for a visit with her uncle, Dr. J. A. Allen, and Mrs. Al t' len - Mr. and Mrs. Carl Boyles and Max Boyles spent Sunday at Pilot Mountain the guests of Messrs. Boyles' father, W. F. Boyles. Miss Louise Boles of Winston - Salem, spent the week-end here the guest of Miss Nettie Hinshaw, at her home in West Elkin. ' Mrs. Carl Young returned Sunday from Asheville, where she spent last week the guest of her sister, Mrs. Edward Wells. Miss Betty Mae Masten left today for Winston-Salem, where she will spend several days the guest of Miss Irene Brendle. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Wolfe and daughter, Miss Sadie Wolfe, of r Mount Airy, were the guests Tues day of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Holcomb, at their home on West Main street. Rev. L. B. Abernethy, Director of the Mission Board of the Southern Methodist church, left Wednesday for Lake Junaluska to attend a Leadership Conference. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Shugart, of near Yadkinville, were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. MaPfon Allen. They were accompanied home by . Mary Elizabeth Allen, who will be their guest during this week. Miss Velma Mae Clinard returned to her home in Richmond, Virginia, Wednesday following a visit of a week to Mrs. Orady Harris at her home on West Main street. Louis Stevens, of Hartford, Conn., spent the week-end here with his mother, Mrs. Charlotte H. Stevens, of Swampscott, Mass., who is spend ing the summer here. Qwyn of Mount Airy, spent the week-end here the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Van Poindexter, at their home on Gwyn Avenue. Mrs. D. Boyd Kimball has returned to her home in Henderson, follow ing a visit of several days to' her daughter, Mrs. C. H. Brewer, at Hotel Elkin. Mrs. P. D. Pegram, of Roanoke, Va., spent the week-end here the guest of her mother, Mrs. Ida Cock erham, at her home on West Main street. George Royall attended the American Legion Convention in Fay etteville this week as a delegate from the George Gray Post of the Ameri can Legion. Ben Kirkman, of Louisville, Ky., is spending a week's vacation here with his mother, Mrs. R. L. Kirk man, at her home on West Main street. - Roger Carter is expected to return the latter part of the week from Mercy Hospital, Charlotte, where he has been a patient for the past sev eral days. . Mrs. J. I. Cockerham, Miss Hazel Sales, Mrs. Noah Collins and Rev. J. W. Kelly, of Jonesville are spend ing this week at Marion attending a tent meeting of the Penticostal Holiness church. Mrs. Theodore Mayberry, Mrs. John P. Gilliam and little daughter, Louise, and Walter Bohannon re turned to their homesi in California Tuesday, following an extended visit to relatives here. Noah Tharpe, of Long Beach, Cali fornia, arrived Friday for a visit to H. P. Gray and family at their home on Vine street. Mi - . Tharpe will spend the remainder of the summer here. Mrs. C. I. Boger submitted to an operation in a Statesville hospital Thursday of last week. On Monday her son, Clifford, was taken to the same hospital for an appendicitis operation. Both of them are mak ing satisfactory progress. Prof, and Mrs. Z. H. Dixon have 'returned from Wilmington, where they visited their daughter, Mrs. R. L. Bostian. Freeman' are on a vacation trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Boyette and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Angier, of Gastonia, were the Sunday guests of Mrs. Earl Ellis, who is visiting in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Bailey. Mrs. T. G. Trivette and son, Frank, and Miss Esther Lawson, of Winston-Salem, were the Sunday guests of Mrs. Trivette's mother, Mrs. R. G. Franklin, at her home on West Main street. Mr. and Mrs. Edworth Harris and son, Bobby, spent the Shatley Springs. Mr. Harris re turned to Elkin Sunday, while Mrs. Harris and Bobby remained for a stay of several days. Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Bobbitt re turned Wednesday to their home in Inverness, Florida, following an ex tended visit to Mrs. Bobbitt's sister, Mrs. R. G. Franklin, at her home on West Main street. / Mrs. Will Vest returned to her home in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, last Friday, after spending several weeks the guest of her sister, Mrs. R. F. Evridge, at her home in Jones ville. W. T. Myers, J. C. Gilliam and K. D. Green, of this city, accompa nied by C. M. Wall, of Princeton, W. Va., returned Saturday from a trip to Ohio, Indiana and other states, where they visited relatives aod friends. ' Mrs. C. L. Haywood, Jr., and children arrived Monday from Dur ham to join Dr. Haywood. They will occupy the apartment in the Nurses' Home on Hospital Road, formerly occupied by Dr. and Mrs. H. L. Johnson. Mrs. W. H. Gibson and Mrs. J. Arnette of High Point, and Misses Jane and Helen Doub of Boonville, were the guests Tuesday of Mrs. Mable G. Lewis and Miss Maude Greenwood at their home on Bridge street. Miss Minnie Russell returned Monday from Moravian Falls where she visited her sister, Mrs. J. D. Brookshire. She also visited her aunt, Mrs. W. E. Triplett at Boomer, and her uncle, J. W. Sinclair, at Ferguson, during her absence. Mr. and Mrs. Ben W. Jones, of Inverness, Florida, were guests the latter part of the week in the home of Mrs. R. G. Franklin, on West Main street. They were accompa nied home by their little daughter, Betty, who has been visiting here for several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shore and lit tle son, Donald, of Yadkinville, and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Poore and daughters, Ruth and Louise, of Mount Airy, were the week-end guests of Mrs. Ida Cockerham, at her home on West Main street. The Misses Poore remained for a week's visit. Construction work has already be gun on the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Farrell, which is being built on West Main street between the residences of Mrs. R. G. Franklin and H. H. Barker. The home will be one and one-half story brick veneer. Mr. and Mrs. Farrell hope to occupy the home by the first of November. Revival In Progress At Elkin Valley The annual revival meeting of Elkin Valley Baptist' church is being conducted this weelc, with large crowds attending and a lively in terest being shown by the church and the surrounding community. ! Rev. R. E. Adams, the pastor, is | doing the preaching and services are I being held twice daily, with a special prayer service preceding the evening Service. t Morning services are at 10:00 a. m., and evening services at 8:00 p. m„ with special, prayer groups meeting at 7:40 p. m. Services will .Continue through the week. The auditorium of the church has recently been remodeled, and an at tractive and spacious choir loft built. All auxiliary organizations of this cHUrch, Sunday School, B. Y. P. U. and W. M. U., are in a very active state, and large crowds are ex pected to attend throughout the meeting. C, Washington, Aug. 4.—Allotment of $1,427,922 for soil erosion control in North Carolina as part of a $27,400,- 000 national program was announced today by the government. The money will be expended on five new projects and in continua tion of existing projects. The new projects for North Carolina are in Alamance, Franklin, Rockingham, Mecklenburg and Davidson counties. Those which have already been started and will be continued are in Guilford, Randolph and Forsyth counties and in Union and Anson counties. NOTICE!
