Miss Evans Honors Visitor at Supper Friday Evening Honoring her houseguest, Miss Lois Boyles of Pilot Mountain, Miss Betty Lou Evans entertained at an enjoyable informal supper Friday evening, having as guests a few intimate friends. Mesdames Brannon and Young and Miss Swaim Are Hostesses Mesdames Hugh Brannon and Charles Young and Miss Vonda Swaim entertained members of the Lucy Hanes Chatham Club and their husbands and friends at a chicken stew at Crystal Lake near Winston-Salem, Thursday evening. Approximately forty guests enjoyed the hospitality of the hostesses. Holyfield-Mounce Announcement is made today of the marriage of Miss Mary Lee Holyfield and Heber Mounce. The marriage was solemnized Friday, August 13, at Hlllsville, Virginia. Mrs. Mounce is the daughter of Mrs. Myrtle Holyfield and the late Early Holyfield of Zephy. Sunday School Class Meets Friday The Ready Class of the Sunday school of the First Baptist church met Friday evening at the home of Miss Hoyland Harris on West Main street, with six members present. During the business hour rou tine business was transacted names were drawn for Pollyanna gifts. It was also decided that a hamburger fry would be held at an early date In honor of the class members who will go away to college in September. A tempting refreshment course was served during a pleasant so cial hour. Engagement of Miss Martha Magruire Is Announced Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Oscar Ma guire, Sr., announce the engage ment and approaching marriage of their daughter, Martha to Leonard Bunkemeyer of Kerners ville, the wedding to take place In the early fall. Miss Maguire is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ma guire and is a popular member of the younger set in this city. For the past two years she has been residing in Kernersville. Mr. Bunkemeyer is formerly from High Point but has made his home in Kernersville for the past year, where he has a respon sible position with the Southern Silk Mills. C. Graham entertained members of her bridge club and sufficient guests to complete two tables at an enjoyable bridge luncheon at her home on Terrace Avenue Thursday. Lovely sum-; mer flowers were used throughout the home. Upon the arrival of the guests a tempting and beau tifully appointed luncheon was served. During the afternoon bridge was played at two tables. B. Harrell, featured the meeting of the Wednesday Afternoon Study Club at the home of Mrs. Wm. M. Allen on Church street | Wednesday afternoon. Each month during the year the club has made! a special study of some foreign' country and the programs have been unusually interesting. Cur rent events for the month were omitted and the time devoted to a review of club books recently fread. Young entertained at dinner at her hqme Sunday in honor of the birthday anniversary of her husband. Lovely dahlias and gladiolia were used in the dining room, to effect a pretty color scheme of pink and white. A handsome birthday cake, top ped with lighted candles, was the central adornment. Dinner was served buffet style. Guests in addition to Mr. Young were: Rev. and Mrs. Eph Whisen hunt and daughter, Edith Adair, Mr. and Mrs. James Burcham, Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Parnell and daughter, Jean, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Reinhardt, Mrs. C. W. Young, mother of the honor guest, Miss Beatrice Newman and Ray mond Vestal. The affair came as a complete surprise to Mr. Young. Both Miss Davis and Mr. Phillips are members of prom inent Ashe county families. Mr. Phillips, who now resides in Jones ;Ville, is a nephew of Judge John son J. Hayes, and Rev. J. M. Hayes, the latter having served for a number of years as pastor of the First Baptist church in this city. Mrs. Jones is Hostess at Party to Honor Bride-Elect ! Mrs. J. D. Jones was hostess at a lovely party Monday evening to honor Miss Sara Augusta Davis of Concord, whose wedding to Athel Paul Phillips, brother of the host ess, on August 25, will be an event of early autumn society. I The home was decorated throughout with greenery and ,white flowers, the bridal colors. Four tables were placed for bridge and bingo. A miniature bride marked the place of the honoree. | The high score award for bridge, linen guest towels, went to Mrs. Franklin Folger and the bingo prize, a handkerchief, to Mrs. Dixie Graham. The traveler's prize, a lovely vase, went to Miss Chloe Holcomb. Miss Davis, the honoree, was presented china in her .chosen pattern. A salad course was served at the conclusion of the play in which the chosen color motif was fur ,ther accentuated. | COOL SPRINGS A good crowd attended the Sunday school Sunday morning, and we were glad of all visitors present. Plans are now going for ward to erect the six room addi tion to the church. It is hoped that since Cool Springs has put herself against the collar she will not waver or turn back until the task is completed. All rough lumber has been donated for framing. It will be cut Thursday and sawed at Charily Carter 3 mill, he giving his work on that day to the Cause of Christ. We are fortunate in having seme good carpenters to lead in the construction of the building, and who have offered their servi ces, too. Messrs. Paul Newman, Woodson and Edgar Newman and Jay My ers visited the Stone Mountain Sunday afternoon. They report a pleasant trip, and a few bruises. Miss Ruth Pruitt of Traphill, visited in this community over the week-end. Miss Madelon Newman return ed home Sunday from Moores ville. A number of friends mo tored down for the day and re turned with" her in the afternoon. Misses Eunice, Bernice and Bertha Linder of Salisbury, were guests of Mrs. R. C. Harris Satur day night. Mrs. Boyd Linder re turned from a visit to her uncle, and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Byrd Jef ferson of Thurmond, Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Newman and family were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Newman Sunday. Prayer service Saturday even ing will be in charge of Paul New man. The past Saturday night the service was in charge of Paul Walker, and among our visitors we were glad to number Rev. J. D. Luffman. Rev. Ed. O. Miller will preach here Sunday evening.
