, -I—lmzr THIS AND THAT Work of making the changes in the Elkin school build ing prescribed by the state deputy fire marshal some weeks ago is in progress here following a trip to Dobson made last week by J. G. Abernethy, member of the school board, and W. W. Whitaker, chief of the fire department. These two officials conferred with John W. Comer, su perintendent of public instruction, who instructed them to have the work begun. Since that time, we've heard from a source we know to be reliable, a member of the board of county commissioners has complained about the chan- ges being made, stating the coun ty didn't have any money to make the Elkin school building less of a fire trap, or words to that effect, and putting up the argument that the building never DEFINITE RELIEF OR MONEY BACK THE WIULARD TREATMENT has brought prompt, definite relief in thousands of cases of Stomach and Pna«nal Mean, due to Hypar*«Jd- Ity, and other forma of Stomach DU tr**s due to Excw Add. Which, anyone with common sense will admit, is a narrow way to look at it and denotes a worship of the dollar that blinds to everything else. The Elkin Woman's Club has given Elkin a public library, an accomplishment that should be marked down on the record set aside for worthy projects. Thanks to this organization of civic minded women, it's possible to secure good books here instead of the usual run of sexy trash which are usually featured in the com mercial lending libraries. We've got a good book —one of the few which escaped the fire—that we'd like to donate to the local li brary. It's "Old Judge Priest," by THE ELKIN TRIBUNE, ELKIN, NORTH CAROLINA Irvin S. Cobb, and it makes ex cellent reading. October is here, next comes November and then Christmas. It's a sight how. time passes so much faster the older a person gets. We can remember when it seemed at least five years from Christmas to Christmas. We were up at Joe Saylor's home, on the Reynolds estate, a | Sunday or so ago, having gone I there with Smith Williamson to I fix a radio. We got*in by dis guising ourself as a radio tube, j and so perfect was our make-up that we had to be nimble to keep from winding up as a permanent part of the in question. , Mr. Reynolds has really got something there! But what im pressed us the most was his elec tric bug killer. It's an arrange ment of wires over which is a blue electric light bulb. We didn't see it in action, but we figured that the blue light, when turned on, attracted all the bugs in the neighborhood and when they went to admire it, they bump into the wires below and get themselves electrocuted. Of i course it's sort of hard on the bugs, but it Just goes to show that curiosity often leads one into difficulty. As it was we didn't get too close to the bug killing contrap tion ourself, because it might be that the dinkus was installed to kill all kinds of pests. ( While we were there we meant to go up to Mr. Reynolds' home' and get ourself invited to dinner, but* being as how the family wasn't expecting us, and being as it was raining and the Reynolds were probably not prepared for company we didn't go. We know they'll probably be awfully dis appointed when they learn about this, but maybe we'll go calling some other time —provided that electric pest killer ain't turned on. We only hope they won't be too disappointed. Elkin's town officials may not realize it, but they are directly responsible for causing many of Elkin's most prominent and re spected citizens to lose their re ligion—if any! It's those big round dinkuses that, in a moment of bad judg ment, were installed at dowritown intersections. Just last week we saw a very prominent Elkin wo man come driving along in her car. Of course when she ap proached the corner down at Turner's cars were parked so as to make it impossible to miss the street nuisance there without straddling it, and at the time, due to an approaching car, this wasn't even possible. Result: bump! bump! as the car's left wheels went rolling along. Well sir, if ever a lady cussed, this one did! We didn't hear what she said, because we were too far away, but we could tell by the movement of her lips and the ex pression on her face what was going on. And we noticed, as we walked across the street, that the paint on the traffic dinkus was all blistered and curled up. Then —to make matters worse —as she turned up Church street, she hit the other one! Why doesn't someone have a heart and take those things up? We thought there was a law against public nuisances. But maybe there's not or we might wake up and find ourself in jail. Which would be nice for you but not so nice for us. Does Bladder Irregularity GET YOU UP? Make this 25c test.
