Dobson, October 4. With
sadness we chrpnicle the death
of Robert D. Shore, treasurer of
R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., in
Winston-Salem last Friday at the
City Hospital, the result of an
operation for appendicitis.
The last rites were held at his
home, Buena Vista Road, Satur
day afternoon, amid a large num
ber of sorrowing friends. Those
attending the funeral from here
were: Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Reece,
Mrs. Emma Mock, Miss Edythe
Reece, Mrs. Emma Hampton,
Henry Hampton, Wade B. Hamp
ton and Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Fol
ger.
Wade B. Hampton returned to
Washington, D. C. Sunday even
ing, after attending the Shore
funeral and spending Sunday with
his mother, Mrs. Emma Hamp
ton.
Mrs. Ada Haymore, Mrs. Ed In
man and Ed Inman, Jr., were vis
itors in the Hampton home Sun
day afternoon.

was 85 years old, a native of Ten
nessee, but bad resided in Surry
county for 65 years. She was a
consecrated Christian woman and
her life was given to deeds of
kindness as long as she was phy
sically able. She is survived by
two sons, Riley Lawson of Mount
Airy, son of her first husband,
and D. W. Hemmings, of Dobson,
and three daughters. Mrs. W. N.
Stanley of Vanessa, Ontario, Can
ada, Mrs. Kate Snow and Mrs.
Pearl Snow of Dobson, and a
number of grandchildren and
great-grandchildren survive her.
Funeral services were held by J.
H. Hall, her pastor, D. H. Hauser
of Westfield, and C. W. Russell,
of Dobson. Her body was placed
by the side of her late husband,
Robert Hemmings, beneath a
bower of floral tributes.
Mrs. Ruth Folger Funderburk
of Wilmington, visited relatives
and friends in Dobson the past
week.
Rev. C. W. Russell preached at
the Methodist church Sunday
morning, using as his text, "The
Christian Church."
Miss Vera Sawyers of West
field, spent the week-end with
her sister, Mrs. Colon Spoon.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. McNeil of
Carthage, spent the week-end
with Mrs. McNeil's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. W. B. Norman.
Attorney W. L. Reece and Hen
ry Hampton attended the sale of
personal property Saturday, be
longing to the estate of the late
Mr. and Mrs. John Kapp of
Kapps Mill.
Dobson school ( set sail this
morning for a year of knowledge
seeking, under the captainship of
Prof. A. H. Wolfe. Several pat
rons attended the opening and
speeches were made by Supt.
John W. Comer, Clerk of Court F-
T. Lewellyn, Attorney W. L. Reece
and Mr. Wolfe.
The Woman's Missionary So
ciety of Dobson Baptist church
met last Thursday evening with
Mrs. D. T. Sparger.
Mrs. W. E. Hancock was pro
gram leader. iDevotionals were
conducted by Miss Norman, the
president. Prayer by Mrs. Book
er. Those contributing to the
program, topic,' "The Japanese,"
were Mrs. R. A. Freeman, Mrs.
Emma Mock, and Miss Ruby
Norman. During the social hour,
Mrs. Sparger served sandwiches,
wafers and grape juice. October
meeting will be held with Mrs.
W. E. Reid.
Some of the Dobson young peo
ple and several married couples
enjoyed a chicken stew and
marshmallow roast Saturday eve
ning at Mr. Winwield Snow's to-
bacco barn. The alluring moon
light night and the glow of the
furnace fires added to the pleas
ure of the picnickers.

eral farmers of this section have
been making molasses the past
week.
The rain and inclement weath
er probably prevented some of
the folks frpm this section from
attending services at Swan Creek
church. It was the beginning of
their annual revival and we all
like to go.
Going with the delegates, Mes
srs. D. J. Melton and Millard
Pardue, Mesdames W. H. Jones,
D. S. Gilliam and Seaman Dob
bins were Mrs. W. A. Pardue and
Mrs. C. W. Gilliam, Sr. to attend
the 116 th session of the Brier
Creek Association held with Oak
Forest church last Friday, four
miles east of Wilkesboro.
Mrs. Dana Cook and children
visited relatives in the Cycle com
munity the past week-end.
Next Sunday is the regular time
for preaching at Bethel church.
It is hoped that there will be a
good congregation.
Mrs. Charles Jones who has
been confined to her bed for sev
eral weeks, is improving some, we
are glad to note and trust she
may soon be able to be up.
Mr. Lincoln Triplett and son,
Gene, visited their daughter and
sister at Elkin last Sunday.
