Presbyterian Auxiliary Meets Monday Evening The Woman's Auxiliary of the Presbyterian church met Monday evening with Mrs. Chas. Poplin on West Main street, with nine mem bers present. Mrs. Morgan Hanks conducted the devotionals and di rected the program. Assisting In the program were Mesdames Wm. R. Wellborn, T. A. Leeper, Dan Barbour, Chas. Poplin and Miss Florence Eldridge. , Mrs. Leßoy Campbell led the Bible study. Refreshments were served dur ing a pleasant social hour at the conclusion of the program. Mrs. A. B. Somen Entertains Bridge Club Thursday Mrs. A. B. Somers entertained members of her bridge club at her home on Church Street Thursday morning, with a full membership attendance. Play began at ten o'clock. At the final count of scores Mrs. R. C. Freeman receiv ed the high score award. Luncheon was served at one o'clock. Members playing were: Mes dames Paul Qwyn, Raymond Chatham, R. M. Hudgins, Errol Hayes, R. C. Freeman, J. R. Poin dexter, Chas. G. Ashby and Ruohs Pyron. Mrs. Darnell Entertains Book Club Friday Evening Mrs. J. Walter Darnell enter tained members of the Friday Evening Book Club at an enjoy able meeting at her home on Gwyn Avenue Friday evening. During a brief business session club books for the year were dis tributed. Rummy was played at three ta bles. Scoring honors went to Miss Mattie Mae Powell and Mrs. T. A. Upon the arrival of the guests a beauti fully appointed dinner was serv ed. The dining table, where covers were placed for eight, was centered with a bouquet of pink roses flanked on either side by green candles in crystal holt'ers. In the living room, where two tables were placed for bridge, yel low roses were used. Scoring hon ors went to Mrs. C. L. Haywood, Jr., and H. C. Graham at the con clusion of the play. Guests were: Dr. and Mrs. C. L. Haywood, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Graham and Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Bryan. Mrs. Chatham Is Feted At Luncheon By Mrs. Harrell Honoring Mrs. Hugh Hill Chat ham, a bride of the autumn, Mrs. R. B. Harrell was hostess at a lovely bridge-luncheon at her home on West Main street Tues day. The dining rcom table, where covers were placed for twelve, was centered with a bou quet of white carnationis. During the afternoon bridge was plaved at thrfce tables. Mrs. Ruohs Pyron won the high score award at the conclusion of the plav and the consolation prize went, to Mrs. C. H. Brewer. Mrs. Chatham was a linen set as p"pct, of honor. Somers. / Miss Guyer Is Hostess To Mission Circle Tuesday Miss Willie Guver was hostess to the Edith Adair circle of the Woman's Missionary Union of the First Bantist church Tuesday ev ening, with twelve members pres ent. Three new members were enrolled. Miss Lucv Gray, circle chair man, conducted the devotionals and Dresiried over the business session. Officers elected to serve with Miss Gray for the coming vear were: MRs Minnie Ruth Mc- Neill, vire-cha'rman; Mi*s Mary Jane Byrd, secretary, and Miss Dorthv Hamnton. treasurer. The program taken from a cur rent issue of Royal Service and the year book, was presented bv Miss Willie Guver, assisted by Misses Acnes Grav. Hazel Bvrd, Minnie Ruth McNeill and Louise Transou. A temntine refreshment course was served during a pleasant so cial hour. i Sunday School Class Meets With Mrs. L. B. Hurd The Dorcas classes of the Sun day school of the First Baptist church met with Mrs. L. B. Hurd on Bridge street, Tuesday even ing, with nineteen members and two visitors present. Mrs. Frear Adams read the scripture lesson and Mrs. T. L. Paraell offered prayer. Mrs. Fred Eidson, class presi dent, presided over the business session, which featured routine reports. Mrs. Thurmond Doug lass was elected to serve as class treasurer. The closing prayer was by Mrs. George Adams. During a pleasant social hour Mrs. Hurd. assisted bv members of the hostess committee, nerved a delicious refreshment course. Home Demonstration Club Meets With Mrs. Cockerham The Mountain Park Home Dem onstration club held the first meeting of the year January sth at the home of Mrs. Folger Cock erham, with Mrs. W. B. Williams associate hostess. The devotional was led by Mrs. Kenzie. The business meeting was presided over by the president, Mrs. Paul Brown. Miss Verna Stanton, the leader, gave an in teresting talk on household linens and a demonstration of different materials and ways of finishing and also table appointments. An attractive prize was award ed by Miss Stanton to Mrs. Cor bet Cockerham for the most at tractive note, book for the past year. At the conclusion of the meeting, coffee, individual mince pies and cakes were served to the twenty one members. The next meeting will be held February 2nd at the home of Mrs. I. O. Wallace. All members are urged to attend. Mrs. Poindexter is Hostess at Bridge-Luncheon Saturday One of the loveliest parties of the week was the bridge-luncheon given Saturday by Mrs. J. R. Poindexter at her home on Bridge Street. Pink and yellow snap dragons and gladioli were used in the decorations of the home, and each of six small tables, where a beautifully appointed luncheon was served prior to the bridge games, was centered with English ivy and candles. During the afternoon bridge was played. Mrs. Hugh Chatham and Mrs. Garland Johnson, recent brides, were each given a gift, and Mrs. Archie Lanier, who left last week for Statesville to make her home w&s also given a remem brance. Table prizes were award ed Mts. .Paul Gwyn, Mrs. R. C. Freeman, Mrs. Howard Hatch, Mrs. R. M. Hudgins, Mrs. Archie Lanier and Miss Josephine Paul. Legion Auxiliary Has Interesting Meeting Monday Evening An interesting meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary of the George Gray Post of the American Le gion was held Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Edworth Harris on West Main street.' with Mrs. Beatrice Myers Phillips - associate hostess, with nineteen members present. The program was in charge of Mrs. Marion Allen and featured a talk on matters of importance to be brought before the present ses sion of Congress, among them be ing the universal service bill, which is sponsored by the Amer ican Legion and the Auxiliary, the purpose of which Is to elimi nate profit from war and thereby make it less desirable. A number of questions and answers were given regarding the bill by Mrs. Allen, assisted by Mrs. George Rovall. During a delightful social hour [refreshments were served. PROMINENT FARMER IS CLAIMED BY DEATH Newt Brown, 69, died at his home, Boonville, Route 1, Thurs day night at 11:00 o'clock as a result of a stroke of paralysis suf fered Tuesday. He is survived by his widow, Margaret Brown, and children, George, Howard, and Pernie Brown, all of the home. He has one brother, Henry Brown and three sisters, all of Jonesville, R. P. D. He was a member of North Oak Ridge church, which he attended regularly. He was a well known farmer. Funeral services were held Sat urday at 11:00 o'clock at North Oak Ridge Baptist church. Rev. Richard Pardue was in charge of the services. Interment was in the church cemetery. ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTICE Having qualified as administra tors of the estate of P. A.
