"This act on the part of Yadkin county people placed the county among the top in the world of ed ucation," he continued, and he praised the work of Superinten dent Reece and the board of edu cation as "growing from the small and inadequate school buildings to the modern consolidated system in the shortest possible time." A wonderful progress in a wonderful ly short time." v Old and New Dr. Erwin spoke of the old and the new methods of teaching. "There is a vast difference in the pioneer teacher and the new," he said. Holt Haywood and Dr. Wingate M. Johnson, members of the board of trustees, and Mrs. O. Prank Teague, manager of the Winston- Salem area, including Surry coun ty. The new standards were adopt ed as a protective measure both for the public and affiliated hos pitals. The American Hospital association has launched a na tional movement to require hos pital service insurance associa tions to maintain rigid financial and ethical standards. Forty associations scattered throughout the United States' with a total membership of near ly 2,000,000, obtained approval certificates. Hospital Saving as sociation, which is the state-wide plan operated by the North Caro lina Medical society and the North Carolina Hospital association, was the only organization in North Carolina receiving approval, it was stated. The measurement standards on which approval was based are: Adequate representation of hos pitals, medical profession, and public; non-profit sponsorship and control; participation by the majority of hospitals of standing in each community; provision of benefits through service contract ed with member hospitals rather than through cash indemnifica tion for hospital expenses; ade quate subscription rates or prem iums; sound accounting proce dures; complete actuarial data; segregation from hospital finan ces; reasonable payments to hos pitals; dignified promotion and administration; hospital service benefits determined by customs of the community; non-interfer ence with relationships between hospitals and their staffs; general approval by the committee on hospital service of the American Hospital association. FULL SLATE COUNTY CANDIDATES NAMED Republican Contests for Most Places on Ticket in Yadkin A DEMOCRATIC CONTEST Yadkin voters will have plenty of candidates to vote for this fall, it seems, as a full set of candi dates have filed for the various county offices, both Democrats and Republicans. There will be primary contests for most of the Republican entries, but only one in the Democratic list, that being for board of education. Lon H. West, present register of deeds, filed for that place again, and is unopposed. L. A. Shore for surveyor, and R. V. Long, for coroner, also have no opposition in the primary. Other Republicans seeking places are as follows: For repre sentative, W. T. Fletcher, Boon ville; W. A. Taylor, East Bend, Route 1, and Hovey Norman, East Bend, Route 1. Clerk of Court J. L. Crater and T. C. Prim, both Yadkinville. For sheriff, A. L. Inscore, present sheriff: D. N. Vestal, East Bend, Route 1, and W. F. Dobbins, Boonville; county commissioners, J. E. Brendle, L. L. Smitherman, B. C. Shore, pres ent members, and A. B. Warden, Hubert L. Evans and D. H. (Bud) Moxley. The only township contest re ported was in Boonville, where Arthur Mathews and Eugene Sim mons have both filed for con stable. L. F. Dezern, Democrat, also filed for that office. The Democrats filed a complete list of candidates, one for each office, as follows: For representa tive, F. M. Woodhouse, Boonville; clerk of court, E. P. Cornelius, East Bend, Route 1; sheriff. J. E. Shore: register of deeds, W. F. Vanhoy; coroner, Henry A. Bran don; surveyor, J. A. Poindexter; county commissioners, T. W. Sty ers, Tuttle Allen and J. W. Shore. Their only contest will be over members of the board of educa tion and the following have filed for that place, with only three members to be selected: M. V. Fleming, Loyd Craver and Paul Davis, present members, and C, E. Boles, G. C. Wallace and J. W. Hudspeth. Dr. T. W. Shore of Boonville, will run for the senate in this dis trict, opposing C. H. Cowles, Re publican, of Wilkesboro. REFRIGERATOR DOOR OPENED, CLOSED MOST The door of the household re frigerator is opened and closed more than any other door of the house, according to Jones Hol comb, local General Electric Deal er- ~ "A door-slaming machine slams the door of each test model 500,- 000 times, the equivalent of 30 years' use, before the cabinet de sign is accepted by General Elec tric for production," he said. Other interesting refrigator facts revealed by Mr. Holcomb are as follows: A jiggling machine shakes and jostles the test cabinet day in and day out to prove it sturdy. Finally the abused machine goes to the hot room where it is tested for cold capacity. It takes 24 hours to manufacture a G-E refrigator, and three fourths of this time, too, is spent in inspecting and testing. Parts are fitted to the accuracy of three ten-thousandths of an inch, or one-seventh the thickness of a human hair. The unit is operated undrt- water. Women, as well as men, inspect each cabinet on the assembly line. Years of research and experi ment are required to perfect each improvement before it is incor porated in a new model. General Electric started experimenting in 1912 with various types of refrig eration units, but it was not until 1927 that this company introduced the first completely sealed refrig erating unit. Thousands of 1927 model moni tor top refrigerators are still giving satisfactory service, but today a housewife can buy a much im proved version of the General Electric sealed unit refrigerator at half the cost: one that will operate on less than half the cur rent used by its 1927 predecessor.
