■ Thursday, March 2. 1939 Elk Theatre 2nd Anniversary The Elk Theatre is this week observing its second anniversary here with a week of special shows as a means of expressing the ap preciation of the management for the patronage which has been shown on the part of the public. The anniversary week shows are as follows: today—"Hard to Get," with Dick Powell and Oli via De Havilland; Friday and Saturday—Gene A u t r y in f "Rhythm of the Saddle," with SmiJey Burnette and Pert Kelton; next Monday and Tuesday— *■" Trade Winds," with Fredric ▼ March and Joan Bennett; next —Jackie Cooper in "Gangster's Boy." » •Hie Elk is under the manage ment of Dr. and Mrs. W. B. Reeves. PLEASANT HILL Rev. I. W. Vestal filled his reg ular appointment at Pleasant Hill Sunday and Sunday night. Rev. D. W. Day preached at White Plains Sunday morning at 11:00, at Buggyboo school house afternoon at 2:00, and at •Macedonia Sunday night at 7:00. rThe Happy Day and the Guiding Star quartets furnished special music. School has been postponed an other week because of measles and mumps. Miss Mae Cockerham is recov ering nicely from a recent opera tion. Misses Margaret and Elizabeth Settle were the Sunday guests of Miss Mozell Darnell. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Richerson and Mr. Richerson's sister, of Pineville, W. Va., were the week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Cur- It tis Couch. Mrs. Tommy Newman visited Mr. and Mrs. Claude Newman last week-end. The F. H. C. class held its reg ular monthly meeting at the church February 23, with the vice-president, Miss Margaret Couch, in charge. After the busi ness hour was over, refreshments were served. COOL SPRINGS The Sunday school at Cool Springs is still going strong. Peo j pie have been kind to Cool " Springs. For reasons of senti ment and love ,of God and His cause here, time and money have been donated freely and today there is no indebtedness against the church. Mr. and Mrs. Garland Pitts of Winston-Salem, were guests of Mrs. Pitts' mother, Mrs. Lily Mathis, the past week-end. Jack Holbrook has purchased the Montgomery Mathis farm and Mr. Mathis has purchased the farm belonging to his mother, Tom Mathis. > Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hol i brook have moved to the home of rMrs. Holbrook's grandmother, Mrs. Prudie Pettyjohn. Misses Reida Ross and Raye Harris attended the young peop les' meeting at Charity Sunday evening. They report a program of interest and variety, with Mr. Marcus Jolly leader. Also, if we may, we'd like to say "hats off," to our neighbor, Pleasant Ridge, just across the , "Big Klkin." Young peoples' meet each Sun- V day evening. Join us if you will. * The young peoples' chorus has room for more. STATE ROAD Mrs. Arnie Smith, of was the Sunday guest of Mrs. Bessie Smith here. Mrs. L. C. Lowe and daughters, of Mining Ridge, visited relatives here Sunday. Messrs. Harold and Orville j Norman and Howard Pettyjohn were visitors at Oak Ridge Sun day evening. Messrs. Dock and Sam Gilliam, of Benham, were visitors here Sunday night. .., Messrs. Paul and John Smith made a business trip to Yadkin vffle Monday. Messrs. J. J. Defibaugh and L H. Smith ware visitors in the Shoaly Branch community Sun day afternoon. A meeting of the Young Men's TClub is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, 4:30 o'clock, at the home of the vice-president. All members are requested to be pres ent. There will be & pr?yer meeting at the home of Mrs. Bessie Smith next Thursday . evening at 7:30. Neighbors and friends are cor dially invited.
