Independent, and is so good we are passing it along to you. We picked it up from the Farmville (Va.) Herald where it appeared in "Scat." These answers were picked from reports of Social Service investigators, as made by needy* persons investigated by the ser vice: Woman and house neat but bare. Mfan has ulster on nis stomach. Man supported parents before marriage. Woman has no job to be men tioned. Woman is saving up for an Ill ness. Milk needed for the baby and father is unable to supply it. Until a year ago this applicant delivered ice and was a man of affairs. Couple breaking up home, friends helping. Since Christmas family has been living on a Democratic club basket. Man has diabetes and is insu lated twice a day. Couple's only source of income is four boarders all out of work. They owe S6OO. NORTH CAROLINA in home for the working girls— lasted three weeks. Nice quiet home family. Doro thy has been out since July. Applicant and wife are illegal ly separated. Roomer pays no board as he usually acts as godfather. The people have religious pic tures all over the place, but seem ed clean, however. | Man recently had operation but is able to hold any position he assumes. Sophie is married to a sailor and her whereabouts are un known. Woman ailing at present—eye sight poor—does housework when able to find it. Apartment crowded and untidy. Saw evidence of girl in clothing. . Woman says they are a delicate ] famliy arfti must have steamed apartment with eggs and oranges. Applicant has one child, Lil lian, who is three months old and owes 12 months rent. Spoke to the wife and applicant who was straining to make ends meet. Saw woman. She has seven children. Husband a veteran. Applicant'is typical real Ameri can. He is the father of 8 chil dren. Woman still owes $45 for a funeral she had recently. Woman in a quarry, too old to work, too young for pension. Man hit by automobile—speaks broken English. This woman is ill. She is being treated. The gas has been turn ed off. This family seems to be just sitting around waiting for grand mother to get old enough for pen sion. The daughter, Mary, is active mentally and otherwise. She has advanced herself but not at home. Woman says husband has ill ness that sounds like arithmetic. I think she means arthuritis. Applicant says he is an Eagle. He and his wife have been living on a brother Eagle for the past two months. Last week wife fell and sprained a leg. Woman says that no matter which way she looks at it, she has nothing. Woman was deserted five years ago. Had it broadcast over radio. Family's savings all used up— relatives have helped. Applicant's wife is a lady and hardly knows what it is all about. Woman taught bridge and suf fered broken leg. Applicant worked in children's underwear. Lei out recently. Applicant and family got sls from neighbors for moving from former address. Saw mother and a child —evi- dence of a father. Good type of American family —appear refined, but intelligent. Woman is willing to struggle if given an opportunity. Woman badly bruised—furni ture man took bed springs. BETHEL Two fine services were held at Bethel church here last Sunday, with the pastor. Rev. R. J. Par due, filling the pulpit at both morning and evening meetings. Rev. Mr. Gilley spoke briefly at the close of the evening service. Several were absent from church due to sickness. There seems to be quite an epidemic of colds and flu in this community at this time. Mr. John Lawrence has been confined to his home with illness for a few days. We are glad to note that Mr. A. C. Osborne is improving some. He has been sick for several weeks at his home near here. Miss Beulah Martin, of near Pleasant Grove, who has been nursing Mrs. W. A. Pardue, has returned to her home. Mrs. Par due's many friends will be glad to know that she is much better. The farmers are happy to see the beautiful sunny spring-like days, and they are taking advan tage of them. Kenneth Stroud was able to re turn to school last week, after be ing absent a week on account of sickness. Paul Mathis spent last Sunday in Winston-Salem with friends. Mr. and Mrs. John Lawrence had as their guests last Sunday Mr. Clem Wood and daughter. Miss Pearl Wood, frpm High Point, Miss Helen and Edgar Hendrix. of Winston-Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wood, of High Point? visited Mrs. Wood's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Johnson, last Sunday. Wanted *o Go Home Only those who have never ex perienced the agonies of seasick ness ever laugh about it. A Phil adelphia man on his way to Eu rope was experiencing seasickness for the first time. Calling his wife to his bedside, he said in a weak voice: "Jennie, my will is in the Commercial Trust Company's caie. Everything is left to you. dear. My various stocks you will And in my safe deposit box." Then he said fervently: "And Jennie, bury me on the other side. I can't stand this trip again, dead or alive." UNION HILL | Rev. A. P. Walker filled his regular appointment at the Bap tist church last Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Kent Combs and Talmadge Crouse were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Isaacs last Sunday in Pulaski, Va. Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Combs are visiting in Richmond, Va., this week. Mr. and Mrs. Prad Shepherd are visiting his parents in West Virginia this week. Friends of Mrs. O. L. Crouse will be sorry to learn that her mother is seriously ill with flu in Mount Airy. This community is saddened at the passing of Mr. J. rf. Brooks, of Union Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Epperson, of White Plains, visited her mother last Sunday. Mrs. Lena Moore is visiting Mr. and Mrs. S- E. Moore this week. Mrs. L. B. Norman, of Mount Airy, spent a few hours here on business last Saturday.
