Mrs. Sam Ray spent the week end in Statesville, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. Paul Gilliam. Mr. Paul Burch, of Mountain Park, spent Mother's Day with his mother, Mrs. Vance Burch, at Rusk. Friends of Mrs. Wade Line berry will regret to know that she is quite ill at her home on Elk Spur Street. Nick Teague of Greensboro, was the overnight guest Monday of Fred Colhard, at his home on Church Street. Miss Hannie Helton of Winston- Salem spent the week-end the guest of Miss Margaret Holcomb, at her home in Jonesville. George Gilliam and daughters, Misses Miriam and Pauline, of Fayetville are the guests of M. H. Walls, at his home near Ronda. Mrs. C. I. Boger left Wednes day for a visit of ten days with relatives at High Point, Lexington and Thomasville. Mrs. Taylor Gabbard, of the state of Ohio, is spending a while with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Martin, at Rusk. Miss Mattie Ruth Wilmoth, of North Wilkesboro, spent Mother's Day at Rusk with her mother, Mrs. N. E. Wilmoth, and family. Mrs. A. G. Click and Miss Mary Hendren spent Sunday the guests of friends at Mocksville, Jerusa lem and Salisbury. B. C. Brown, of Greensboro, spent the week-end in Jonesville, the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Brown. Miss Constance Greenwood spent the week-end in Winston- Salem with her mother, Mrs. Mae Bodenheimer Greenwood. Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Prentice of Marine City, Mich., and Mr. and .Mrs. J. B. Pierce of Crumpler, were the guests Sunday and Mon day of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Neaves, at their home on Bridge Street. Mr. and Mrs. Ovid T. Blackburn had as their guests at their home on Bridge Street the past week. Misses Midge Rose and Caroline Barnptte of Baltimore, Md. The Blackburns formerly lived in Bal timore. Miss Betty Ann Brandon, of Chapel Hill, is spending this week here the guest of Miss Bessie Jean Brown, at her home on Church street. Rufus Crater, of Winston-Sa lem, spent the week-end here with his mother,. Mrs. R. P. Crater, at her home on Gwyn avenue. Miss Edwina Lawrence, a stu dent at Meredith College, Raleigh, spent the week-end here with her mother, Mrs. E. B. Lawrence, at her home on Gwyn avenue. The many friends of Worth M. Gray will regret to know that he is suffering from pneumonia. Mr. Gray is a patient at Hugh Chat ham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. L. E. Aldridge and chil dren. Eugene, Maxine and Dale, and Mrs. Jane Smith spent Sun day in Guilford College, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Smith. Mrs. Neal Spainhour, of East Bend, spent the week-end here the guest of her cousin, Mrs. L. E. Cockerham. Mrs. Spainhour left Sunday for a visit with rela tives in Ararat and Siloam. George D. Smoot, who for the past 16 years has been in the U. S. Navy and who has been sta tioned at Norfolk, Va„ the great er part of the time, arrived here Friday for an indefinite stay. Mrs. B. P. Miller, who has been at Sedgfield Inn, Greensboro, during the winter, will spend the week-end here with her sister, Mrs. E. P. McNeer, en route to Watch Hill, R. 1., for the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bivins had as their guests on Sunday, Mrs. Bivins' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Van Poindexter, and Mr. and Mrs. Gwyn Poindexter and chil dren, Tommy Gwyn and Ann, of Wilkesboro. Mrs. E. F. McNeer and Miss Betty Allen plan to leave Tues day of next week for New York to attend the World's Fair. They will be accompanied by Mesdames John Reich and Thomas Ring, of Washington, D. C. / Mr. and Mrs. John Frank Kirk man and Ben Kirkman, of Char lotte, and Robert Kirkman, of Winston-Salem, spent Sunday here with their mother, Mrs. R. L. Kirkman, at her home on West Main street. Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Myers and Misses Virginia Davis and Mar garet and Laura Evelyn Boger spent Sunday at Oak Ridge where they attended the annual dress parade of the cadets at Oak Ridge Military Institute. Mrs. L. A. Jackson, of Greens boro. spent the week-end at Rusk with her mother, Mrs. Ila D. Burch and family. She was accompanied home by Mr little brother, Jimmy Burch, who will spend a week or two with her. Mr. and Mrs. George Royall, Miss Peggy Royall, Miss Eleanor Hayes, George Grier and Hayden Ratledge spent Sunday in Chapel Hill, the guests of the former's son, Edwin Royall, a student at the University of North Carolina. Mrs. Hugh Hill Chatham, Mrs. Fletcher Harris, Miss Josephine Paul, Miss Caroline Lillard, John Sagar and Van Djllon will go to North Wilkesboro this evening (Thursday) to participate in a recital given by the vocal pupils of R. Gratz Cox. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Joyce and family, of Sanford, spent the week-end here with Mrs. Joyce's mother, Mrs. J. H. Ball, at her home on West Main street. They were accompanied home by Mrs. Ball, who will spend several weeks as their guest. Mrs. John C. Daniel has re turned to her home in Wilson, following a visit tq Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Parker, the latter her daughter. She was accompanied home by her little granddaugh ter, Betty Ann Parker, who will be her guest for several days. Mrs. W. E. Bohannon and little granddaughter, Patty Rue Young, left Sunday for Raleigh, where they will spend a month with Mr, and Mrs. J. B. Long, the latter a daughter of Mrs. Bohannon. SMITHEY IS NAMED TO WILKES BOARD North Wilkesboro, May 16— W. E. Smithey, merchant and well known resident of Wilkesboro, has been appointed to the Wilkes county welfare board. The ap pointment was made by the coun ty board of commissioners in re cess meeting this month. Mr. Smithey will succeed Dr. W. W. Miles, whose term will ex pire June 1. The board will then be com posed of Mr. Smithey, William A. Stroud and P. J. Brame.
