BOONVILLE Mr. Romie Chipman and fam ily, of Arlington, spent the week end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Chipman. Mr. and Mrs. Prank Wood house spent several days with Mrs. Woodhouse's mother in Bed ford County, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Hutchens of the Forbush community an nounce the birth of a baby boy last Wednesday, May 24. Shaver's Deluxe Entertainers from Raleigh are giving a series of tent entertainments here this week. The programs feature string music, vaudeville acts and vocal selections. They are radio artists from Station WPTF. Mr. and Mrs. Bovender, of lowa, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Norman. Mrs. Bovender is a former resident of Yadkin county. Mr. Stinson Is in excellent health for a per son of his age. The only , bad condition of health that he has is his lack of hearing. He is very spry and works in the fields. His greatest hobby is hunting, of which he does a great deal. He can shoot even now with the very best marksmen. Although his hearing has failed him, his eye sight has stood him in good stead. He can kill a sparrow with his rifle at a distance of 50 steps, something that many a young person could not do. • This year he has killed 30 squirrels, 30 rab bits, several crows, and has caught 12 hawks and 12 owls in traps. Duke Bledsoe, of Sparta, was a business visitor in town. Alvis Hobson and- Dwight Bren dle returned the latter part of last week from Mars Hill College where they were students the past year. Taft Vestal and James Dobbins made a business trip to Galax. Boonville baseball team won a high-scoring, 1 op-sided game from the East Bend boys on the local diamond last Saturday. Transou and family attended the Tfansou reunion at Wilkesboro Sunday. Miss Mattie Motsinger, of Win ston-Salem, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Motsinger, over the week-end. W. T. Fletcher made a business trip to Charlotte. Albert Lewis, Ernest Holcomb, Everette Gough and Johnnie Collins made a trip to Sparta. Thad Shore, Jr., of Devotion, Surry county, visited his parents, Dr. and Mrs. T. W. Shore. Mrs. Cranfill and Miss Milla Dunnigan, of Yadkinville. were business visitors in town Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Baker and son. Junior, of Elkin, visited relatives here. Henry Reece made a business trip to Winston-Salem. Prof. Stacey Weaver, of Jones ville, was a visitor in town Mon day. Mrs. Grover Brown recently spent several days with her par ents at Walnut Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Erbin Cockerham, of Concord, visited Mrs. Cocker ham's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Stinson. R. M. Fletcher made a business trip to Charlotte. James Reece, a student at Vir ginia Polytechnic Institute at Blacksburg, returned to his home here Monday. Mr. Reece, a grad uate of Appalachian State Teach ers College, is specializing in Ag riculture. Mrs. Chappell Wilson and chil dren, William and Emma Jean, are spending a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Reece. Allen Shore returned home from Campbell College the past week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Fleming, of Walkertown, attended the birthday dinner given in honor of Mr. Santford Stinson Sunday. Others present included A. C. Stinson and family, of Boonville, Lonnie Stinson and family, of Winston-Salem, Frank Burton and family of the home and Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Cockerham, of Concord. Raeford Chipman, of Low Gap, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Chipman. Bride-Elect Complimented Mrs. Aaron Speer and Miss Mary Speer honored Miss Lucy Brendle, bride-elect of June, at a kitchen shower given at their home. The living room was beautiful ly decorated with a variety of cut flowers. Several games and contests were participated in by the hon oree, and other guests. Miss Mary Speer, the hostess, was in charge of the entertainment. The first contest engaged in was the "Guessing Game." In the "Cake Contest," a very unique way of choosing partners was practiced. Each person present drew a slip of paper which had the title of some familiar song written upon it. Each guest was asked to hum the song given her until she found someone else humming the same tune. When these two per sons found each other they were partners for the contest. Mrs. Olive Smith and Miss Jane Doub were winners of this contest. They graciously presented their gift to the bride-elect. An interesting treasure hunt was held as the final game of the night. The honor guest was given a tiny lighted lamp and di rections for her to follow as she searched for the hidden treasure. The hunt led her over much of the large lawn, the dining room, and finally into the. living room where the gifts were found in a large basket. After the gifts were opened and viewed by the guests, refresh ments consisting of ice cream and cookies were served. Those present included the honor guest, Miss Lucy Brendle, Miss Cleo Brendle, Mrs. Bill Cook, Mrs. D. M. Brendle, Mrs. Weldon Hinshaw, Mrs. Wesley Hinshaw, Miss Pauline Jones, Miss Kath erine Jones, Mrs. Paul Speer, Mrs. G. N. Dobbins, Mrs. Watt Deal, Mrs. Allan Jessup, Miss Grace Hayes, Mrs. Cornelia Speas Woo ten, Mrs. Gorrell Stinson, Mrs. Olive Smith, Miss Jane Doub, Mrs. John D. Mock and Mrs. W. E. Brooks. Yadkin Health Department Gives Venereal Tests The two Yadkin county nurses. Miss Laura Niblock and Mrs. Jamie Leake Messick, are very busy these days, although theyi don't have school cases to interest them. At the present time the chief health work being done in the county is carried on at Boonville and Yadkinville clinics where the nurses may be found every Mon day and every second Wednes day. Mrs. Messick stated that their most important work dealt with maternity and infancy cases. The work they are doing in this field consists of home visitation of expectant mothers, and advice on infant feeding. According to the nurses there is a great deal of pellagra to be found among people they hav£ visited in Yadkin county. They are trying to make a drive to remedy this condition. To make this drive effective they are furnishing those afflicted with nicotinic acid and yeast, and are emphasizing special diets of milk and milk products, red meats, and plenty of leafy vegetables. Although this year is the off year for county typhoid vaccina tions, Mrs. Messick states that she will vaccinate for diphtheria every Monday morning from 9 to 12, and on every second Wednes day at the same time at her of fice over the bank at Boonville. Blood tests have been given to many people for venereal dis eases. At the present time there are 44 person receiving treat ment in the county. Mrs. Messick has 35 taking the treatments, while Miss Niblock has only nine. Of this total number there are 37 negroes and seven whites. Dr. Grady of the Tri-County Health Department, is conducting this phase of the work. Tlie venereal clinic is conduct ed at Boonville every Monday morning from 9 to 12 and at Yadkinville every Monday after noon from 1 to 3. The prenatal clinic for expectant mothers is held every second Wednesday at Boonville beginning at 10 o'clock, and every fourth Wednesday at Yadkinville beginning at the same time. G. Wright, of West Jeffer son, Has Backing for Of fice in American Legion HAS EXCELLENT RECORD West Jefferson, May 26 The Ashe county post of the American Legion will sponsor P. G. Wright, of West Jefferson, as a candidate for Department Vice Commander at the state convention that will be held in Raleigh next month. Notices were sent today to all posts in the state, soliciting sup port for the Ashe legionnaire who has made an outstanding record in Legion work. Last year he was awarded the Bryce P. Beard trophy for ren dering distinguished service - as district commander of the 15th district and this year his district was the first one in the state to pass its membership quota by January 1. * During the World War, Wright served in the infantry as an en listed soldier and spent twelve months in France. He was dis charged as a sergeant. He was a charter member of the Rumley-Thompson post at Damascus, Va„ which was organ ized in 1920. He moved to West Jefferson in 1934 and immediate ly promoted the organization of the Ashe county post number 171 and served as its first command er. Except for the time spent in war service, Wright has been connected with the Norfolk & Western railroad as station agent since 1912.
