Thursday, July 20, 1939 News of Jonesville Miss Virginia Lineberry, Editor Mrs. J. C. Price and daughter, June, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Gilliam at the* home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Gilliam. Mrs. John Arnold is spending a few days in Yadklnville this week with friends and relatives. Mr. F. A. Lineberry spent Mon day and Tuesday in Greensboro attending to business matters. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brandon and children. Jimmy and Betty, are spending this week with the former's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brandon. Mrs. P. H. Underwood visited her brother, Mr. John Mock, of Boonville, Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs. Otis Felts and children, of Winston-Salem, spent a few days here last week with the latter's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Z. B. Martin. Miss Carrie Taylor, of Raleigh, is spending this week here with friends and relatives. Misses Hilda Gae Renegar and Beatrice Burcham spent last Thursday and Friday in Blowing Rock where Miss Renegar com peted in a beauty contest and Burcham in an amateur contest. Miss Margaret Renegar, of Ra leigh, is spending this week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. L. Renegar, of Arlington. Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Helton and Mrs. John Arnold visited friends in Salisbury Sunday. Miss Jessie Byrd, of North Wilkesboro, and Miss Olegean Cockerham, of Elkin, were the week-end guests of Miss Mary Lou Holleman. Mrs. Joe Paris and Mrs. N. E. Porter, of Hamptonville, were the guests of Mrs. W. V. Holcomb a few days last week. Mrs. W. V. Holcomb spent Sun day with her mother, Mrs. W. E. Macey, of Hamptonville. Mr. and Mrs. Walker Macey, of Leaksville, spent a few days last week with Mrs. W. V. Holcomb. Miss Marian Groce is spending this week in Winston-Salem, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Felts. Mrs, Phillip Eskridge returned to her home Sunday after under going a serious operation at Davis hospital, Statesville. Her many friends wish for her a speedy re covery. Mrs. Sam Hollo way returned to her home in Morehead City after spending a week in Jonesville and Boonville visiting friends and rel atives. She was accompanied by Mr. Jack Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Alex Biggs. Mr. and Mrs. Davis J. Reece and son, Davis Nance, returned to their home in Roxobel Sunday after spending a few days here with friends and relatives. They were accompanied by Mrs. Jack Brown and daughters, Phyllis and Jackie Brown. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Lineberry and children spent Sunday in Mocksville visiting friends. Mr. and Mrs. Ivry Johnson and Miss Lorraine Lineberry and Mr. Dewey Helton attended the auto mobile races at Salisbury Sunday. Mrs. Hugh Holcomb spent Tuesday in Winston-Salem. Miss Betty Jo Apperson, of Winston-Salem, is spending this week with Miss Aliene Holcomb. Mr. Wallace Apperson and Mr. Wesley Moorfield, of WinstoA- Salem, spent the week-end with Mr. Transou and Gilmer Boles. Mrs. I. Y. Jester is listed among the sick this week. Mr. J. E. Hoover and Mr. George Fox spent the week-end at their homes in Hickory. Mr. Everett Murphy spent the week-end at his home in Galax, Va. Miss Virginia Lineberry visited Misses Dorothy Helton and Iris Lee Murphy in High Point Sun day. The Intermediate classes of the Jonesville Baptist church spent the day at Williams Park last Thursday. They had as their chaperones Mrs. Roby Casstevens, Mrs. G. S. Wagoner and Miss Hazel Phillips. Everyone reported a "grand time." Reece Entertains at Luncheon Mrs. D. G. Reece entertained at a luncheon Wednesday afternoon from one until three honoring her guests, Mr. Reece's sister, Mrs. Sam Holloway, of Morehead City, and their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Davis J. Brown, Olva Moxley, Alston Boles, Jack Brown, Alex Biggs, the honoree, Mrs. Sam Holloway, Mrs. Davis Reece and the hostess, Mrs. D. G. Reece. Y.W.A. Meets Tuesday Evening With Miss Gilliam The Alda Grayson Y.W.A. of the Baptist church met for its July meeting at the home of Miss Pauline Gilliam Tuesday evening with five members and four vis itors present. Miss Gilliam was in charge of the devotional and program, "Sunlight and Stars," and was assisted by various mem bers. Miss Bertha Adams, lead er, presided over a short business period. Refreshments were served to the following: Misses Vera Mae Price, Evelyn Arnold, Georgie Vestal, Bertha Adams, Carrie Taylor, Vina Starks, Beatrice Casstevens, Beulah Swaim and hostess, Pauline Gilliam. Seniors Have Class Meeting: Monday Evening The senior class of the Metho dist church had their monthly class meeting at the home of Miss Rosalie Minish Monday ev ening, with ten members present. Mrs. O. E. Boles, president, pre sided over a short business pe riod. At the conclusion of the fun period, a watermelon feast on the lawn was enjoyed by all. DOUGHTON Rev. Grant Corthan has return ed home after spending about 10 days in Maryland . Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hinshaw of Elkin, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. De- Journette, of. Thurmond spent Sunday with Misses Alma and Sallie Woodruff. Mr. and Mrs. Clete Riggs, of Miller's Creek, and Mr. and Mrs. Coley Cockerham and children, of Elkin, were the week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Lyon. The Wilkes County demonstra tion club met Monday with Mrs. W. R. DeJournette, about 20 members were present, a very in teresting home demonstration on canning vegetables, by Miss Har riette McGoogan. Mr. and Mrs. Will Wright have returned home from Norfolk, Va., where they spent the week-end. The W. M. U. of Roaring Gap church will meet Wednesday night at the church. We hope to have all the mem bers present. EAST BEND Mrs. Hovey Norman and Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Bowman left last week to visit relatives in Fargo, North Dakota. Johnnie Poindexter returned Saturday from Shallotte on the Eastern Carolina coast where he enjoyed several days of deep sea fishing. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Williams, Mrs. Williams' mother, Mrs. Nora Ward, and Miss Qail Williams re turned recently from Carolina Beach where they spent several days. Miss Dallas Sink, of Winston- Salem, visited Miss Athea Nor man the past week-end. Misses Mary and Blanche Smitherman spent the past week end with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Brown and family visited friends and rela tives in Yadkinville. Misses Betty and Lola Maude McKinney, of Vienna, were the Sunday guests of Miss Margaret Taylor. Dr. Tom Benbow, of Winston- Salem, was the guest of his moth er, Mrs. Mattie Benbow. Mr. Claire Brown, of Winston- Salem, visited his mother, Mrs. Alice Choplin. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hunter and family, of Boonville, visited rela tives in East Bend. Mr. Lee Douglas made a busi ness trip to Pilot Mountain. Mr. Jeter Haynes made a busi ness trip to Yadkinville recently. Mr. and Mrs. Ott Coram, of Winston-Salem, were the Sunday guests of Mr. Coram's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Avery Coram. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Patterson visited Mrs. Patterson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Fleming, at Boonville. Mr. Shelley Sills made a busi ness trip to Winston-Salem. The homecoming services at Shady Grove Methodist church were well attended last Sunday. In the morning the regular ser mon was preached while the af ternoon was devoted to quartet singing. Dinner was served on the grounds. Miss Hattie Poindexter has re turned from Shallotte where she visited several days with Mr. and Mrs. Hal Martin. Next Sunday, July 23, there will be a quartet singing conven tion held in the East Bend school auditorium. There will be quar tets from every section of the county and some from distant counties. Special singing was rendered by quartets and groups throughout the day, and at noon time a bountiful dinner was en joyed by all.
