NBMS FROM THE KB The Baptist Missionary Society met with Mrs. Rosa Booker last Friday evening. The meeting opened with the Woman's Hymn, "Come Women Wide Proclaim." Devotionals were conducted by Mrs. Emma Hampton. Topic for the month, "Carrying Out the Great Commission in the Home land." Leader of program, Mrs. W. L. Reece, who introduced the program with a talk on "The Great Commission and Home Missions." Mrs. Rebecca Lamont spoke on the "Homeland," and Mrs. W. E. Reid discussed "Making Discip les in Our Homeland." Leader spoke briefly of the people of dif ferent nations and the mission work among them here in our own Homeland. Mrs. Emma Hampton spoke of "Home Mis sions and National Righteous ness." Mrs. John Lewellyn read a poem, "The Faithful Few." During the business session Mrs. C. W. Fowler gave a splen did report on "Personal Service," at the conclusion of which sand wiches, iced tea and watermelon were served by the hostess and her daughter, Miss Elizabeth Booker. The August meeting will be held with Mrs. W. E. Hancock. Mr. Arthur Graham of the Copeland section, directed a Lay man Program at the Methodist church Sunday morning. Those who contributed to the program were Mrs. Tom Folger, Mrs. J. W. Thore and Mr. C. W. Dockery. Bill Dunnagan conducted the de votionals and Mr. Bryant the concluding prayer. A number of Surry county farm boys and girls will attend the annual N. C. 4-H Short Course at N. C. State College in Raleigh this week. They will be accompanied by Mr. A. P. Cobb. Surry club worker. The program for the week will include various courses of instruction, which will be very helpful to the 4-H Clubs. Miss Lela Cooper is spending her vacation in Dobson. She is a teacher in the Goldsboro school. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Evans and daughter, Tommie, and Marianne Mock spent Sunday in Statesville, with friends. Mrs. F. F. Riggs is visiting her sister, Mrs. Roger Christy, at Em ory, Va. Miss Rachel Howell of Hamlet, is visiting Miss Eugenia Reid. Miss Howell is a member of the Dobson school faculty. The Methodist Missionary so ciety met Tuesday evening with Mrs. A. P. Cobb. Miss Elizabeth Freeman, of Raleigh, spent the week-end with her parents, Atty. and Mrs. R. A. Freeman. Spencer Norman visited his sister, Mrs. W. H. McNeil, at Car thage, for the week-end. Dr. and Mrs. Joe Folger are attending the World's Fair in New York this week. Bausie Marion, Robert Free man, Jr., and Miss Rachel How ell spent the week-end with Miss Ruth Halsey at Mouth of Wil son, Va. A benefit bridge and rummy party was given in the Woman's Club building Saturday evening for benefit of the Woman's Club. The progressions and various amusements of the evqping were directed by Mrs. A. P. Cobb and her committee. An auction sale was an interesting feature of the evening program. The proceeds amounted to $25.00. Grand prize was won by Dr. Paul Folger. The prize in bridge was won by Miss Emma Comer, gentleman's prize by Mr. A. P. Cobb. Rummy prize was won by Mrs. V. J. My rick. Children's prize in rummy was won by Miss Betty June 4Chreatte, and Chinese checkers prize by Bertha Jewel Hemmings. Mr. J. T. Threatte conducted the auction sale. Powers filled his reg ular appointment at Mountain View Baptist church Sunday. A large crowd was present for the preaching services at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., and 2 o'clock for the bap tismal service. Miss Elizabeth Harding, of Huntsville, spent the week-end with her cousin, Miss Louise Pin nix. Mr. Lum Shore, of Jonesville, spent Sunday here the guest of his mother, Mrs. Nancy Shore. Miss Doris Ashley, of Arling ton, visited Miss Prances Pinnix and other friends here over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Swaim, of Winston-Salem, were the Sunday guests of Mrs. Swaim's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Tucker. Mrs. Sheloma Mathis remains in an unchanged condition at her home here. She has been suffer ing for a number of weeks from a stroke of paralysis and other ailments. Miss Bessie Barber, of Hanes, spent the week-end here visiting relatives and friends. Mrs. Beulah Cooper and chil dren and Miss Mary Harris, of Elkin, spent the week-end with their mother, Mrs. W. T. Shore. Rev. J. L. Powers, of Elkin, and Mr. Harrison Money, of Winston- Salem, were the Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Mode Vestal. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Riley and daughters, Edith and Louise, visited relatives in eastern North Carolina over the week-end. Miss Beatrice Pinnix, of Win ston-Salem, visited her cousins, Misses Helen and Ruby Pinnix, Sunday. Miss Mary Bell Riley and little nephew, Jimmie King, spent Sunday with their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Stokes. COOL SPRINGS We're busy folks around Cool j Springs. Yes, the showers came and the threshers are still with us. Our Sunday school is doing fine, with 152 present Sunday. Misses Ruth and Clara Davis, of Lynchburg, Va., were guests of their sister, Mrs. Lauren Hol brook. and Mr. Holbrook the past week-end. Miss Lillian Tucker, an em ployee of Sydnor-Spainhour com pany, spent her vacation visiting friends the past week. Among those she visited were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Joines, and Miss Edith Douglas, of Sparta. Uncle Charlie Carter and wife visited Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Tuck er Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Carmel Tucker visited Mr. and Mrs. Will Van hoy at their home near Long town the past week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Lauren Holbrook and Misses Ruth and Clara Davis visited Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hayes, of State Road, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Eidson, of Elkin, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Fields, and Mrs. C. F. Fields Sunday. Mrs. Lelia Richardson, of Penn sylvania, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Holbrook, here. Mr. and Mrs. James Holbrook have returned to their home in Richmond, Va., after a two weeks' visit to Mr. Holbrook's parents here, Mr. and Mrs. Will Hol brook. We are announcing the singing convention at Cool Springs Sun day. The Sunday School con vention will be held here the first Sunday in August at 2 o'clock. | STATE ROAD Miss Anne Johnston, of Win ston-Salem, spent the week-end visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hanes. Mrs. Paul Phillips and sons, Richard and Alfred, visited rela tives in Yadkin county (his week W. H. Combs left Sunday for Richmond, Va., on a business trip. He was accompanied by his wife and daughters, Mary Fran ces and Betty Anne, also Billy Donovan, who will visit Mr. Combs' brother and family, Ker mit S. Combs, of Ashland, Va. Mrs. Bird Andrews has return ed from Davis hospital, States ville, where she has been a pa tient for some time. We are glad fhe is able to be home again. Rev. and Mrs. W. L. Winters and Mr. Melvin Winters and family, of Charlotte, are visiting their daughter and sister, Mrs. Paul Phillips. Mr. and Mrs. Otis Key spent Sunday in Greensboro and Bur lington visiting Mr. Key's moth er, Mrs. Martin Williams, and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Gentry and son, McCree, spent Sunday with their daughter, Mrs. N. A. Ray, and family at Salisbury. Rev. Kermit S. Combs, of Ash land, Va., spent Sunday night with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Combs, on his way to attend the 'Baptist World's Alliance In Atlanta, to which he is being sent as a delegate from Ashland Bap tist church of which he is pastor. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Irvin and daughter, Daisy Mae, are visiting Mrs. Irvin's brother. Roy Hutchens, and family in Win ston-Salera. Mrs. Alice Hicks, of Elkln, spent the week-end with Mrs. Emma Walters. BRANON Mrs. Dina Steelman spent part of last week with her sister, Mrs. Lina Reavis, of Statesville. Mrs. E. E. Smith has returned home from Elkin hospital, where she has been a patient for sev eral days. Misses Doris Ruth Smith, Mil dred Garner and Zelma Steel man made a business trip to Elkin Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Tilden Byrd, of High Point, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Garner. Mr. Forrest Doss spent the week-end at North Wilkesboro. A program will be given by a group of young folks Saturday night at the Sunday school con vention at Hanes Grove. Every one is urged to attend. Mis. Nancy Adams and son, Barney Smith, of Cool Springs, spent a short while with Mr. and Mrs. Tom C. Cummings Sunday evening. Mrs. Margaret Cornelius spent the week-end with Miss Flossie Joyner, of Hamptonville. Miss Mary Ruth Vanhoy spent the week-end with Miss Betty Sue Reinhardt, of Longtown. Mr. Taft Cummings, of Boon ville, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cummings, of here, spent the week-end with his cousin, Mr. Grover Patton, of Hiawatha, W. Va. The event will be in celebration of the fifty-sixth birthday anni versary of Mr. Glaspie and the sixtieth birthday anniversary of A. F. Walker. Rev. George W. Miles will be speaker for the oc casion. All friends and relatives are invited to attend and bring a basket dinner. Claude Beamer and family, of Flint, Mich., were the guests of friends here a short time last week. Crops are looking splendid fol lowing the nice showers. A. H. Wolfe spent the early part of the week near the coast.
