McDaniel spent last week at West Jefferson, the guest of her mother, Mrs. Chessie Neal. W. A. Reeves of Statesville spent the latter part of last week here the guest of relatives and friends. Miss Betty Allen left Sunday for Durham, where she will at tend summer school at, Duke University. Mrs. R. L. Lovelace Br.d chil dren are visiting her mother. Mrs. Charles Hunt, in North Wilkes boro, this week. Miss Mary Elizabeth Allen left Wednesday for High Point, where she will spend ten days the guest of Miss Erma Shore Siceloff. Mr. and Mrs. V. M. Alaridge and son, of Asheboro, were the week-end guests of Mrs. L. E. Al tiridge, at Home Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Wilkins, Jr., of Florence, S. C.. were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Glover. Mr. and Mrs. Leßoy Martin, of Raleigh, were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. David Brendle at their home on Bridge street. Archie Mcintosh, of Old Fort, was an overnight guest Monday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Graham on Gwyn avenue. Mrs. I. A. Eldridge is spending this week in Lexington, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Eldridge, the former her son. Raymond Hanks will leave Sun day for Dover, Del., where he will spend two weeks with his uncles, Chess and F. M. Brown. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Atkinson and Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Byrd attended the funeral of Mrs. George Mat thews at Siloam Sunday. Sam Gray returned Friday from N. C. State College, Raleigh, where he has been attending summer school. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Amer son, of St. Charles, S. C., are the guests this week of their daugh ter, Mrs. Dwight Bailey, at her home here. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gwyn and son, Paul, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Richard G. Chatham spent the week-end at Hungry Mother Park, Va. Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Kennickle, Jr., of Winston-Salem, were the Sunday guests of Mrs. R. L. Hub bard, at her home on Surry ave nue. Miss Nettie Hinshaw returned Sunday from New York where she spent last week buying fall ready-to-wear for the Sydnor- Spainhour store here. Mrs. Edward C. Voss and little son, Edward, Jr., of Greensboro, arrived Saturday for a visit of a week with her mother, Mrs. E. C. Grier, at her home on Bridge street. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hill Chat ham left Monday for Stanley town, Va., where they will make their home. Miss Margaret Wiley Boren will leave today for Greensboro, fol lowing a visit of two weeks with her grandfather, W. S. Reich, at his home on Vine street. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Windsor and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Min nish spent the week-end at Lake James, near Marion, and Linville and Blowing Rock. Mrs. B. S. Matthews of East Bend and Miss Freddie Matthews of Conway, S. C., were the guests Tuesday and Wednesday of Dr. and Mrs. C. E. Nicks. Miss Mattie Sterling returned to her home in Winston-Salem Wednesday, following a visit of a week with Mrs. Mason Lillard, at her home on Gwyn avenue. Miss Julia Lee Bowman, of Pensacola, Fla., arrived Saturday for a visit of several days with Mrs. Sam Neaves, at her home on Gwyn avenue. Miss Myra Sale spent the week end in Monroe, the guest of Miss Dale Gulledge. From Monroe Misses Sale and Gulledge went to Raleigh-for a visit of a week with friends. Mr. and Mrs. James Farrell, of Franklin, Tenn., are the guests this week of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Farrell at their home on West Main street. The Messrs. Farrell are brothers. J. Mark McAdams and Errol Hayes accompanied the Boy Scout troops and members of Mr. McAdams* Sunday school class to Mitchell's River for an overnight camping trip Monday. Mrs. George Pauls and Miss Gloria Morrison, of this city, ac companied by Mrs. Harry Tsumas, of Statesville, spent Tuesday in Charlotte, the guests of friends. Mrs. Clay Church and Mrs. Chester Palmer, of Marion, Va., vere the week-end guests of Mrs. Church's mother, Mrs. Beatrice Myers Phillips, at her home on Bridge street. Mr. and Mrs. R. N. She had as her guest Miss Margaret Blanchard of Rose Hill. Mrs. E. Carl Boyles and little daughter, Jane, returned Tuesday from Pilot Mountain, where they spent a week with relatives. They were accompanied home by Miss Jo Swanson, who will be their guest for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Sam McLester and two children, Prances and Henry Franklin, and Eugene Clark and Neal Lackey, all of Charlotte, were the Sunday guests of Mrs. Ora Wall Vanhoy at her home on West Main street. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Parks, of Raleigh, were the overnight guests Thursday of Mr. Parks' parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Parks, on Bridge street. Mr. and Mrs. Parks were en route to Blowing Rock. Beeson and Gwyn Walker of this city, and Rex Walker of Winston-Salem are ex pected to return today from Morehead City, where they have been since Sunday on a fishing trip. They were accompanied home by Mrs. Dick Martin, who will be their guest for several days. Meed at their home on West Main street. Mrs. Zearley is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Meed. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Keggel, of Greensboro, were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Young and Mrs. W. E. They left Sun day for Roanoke, and were ac companied by Betsy Richardson, who will be their guest for sev eral days. Mrs. Bailey will t M Big "Cat" k Wk 1® mk The biggest catfish a lot of people have even seen was ex hibited in front of the Bas keteria, local grocery store, here last Friday. The fish, pic tured above in a tank of water, measured 40 inches in length and weighed 31 pounds. It was about 12 inches wide across the head. Caught by hook in New River by someone whose name was not learned, the fish was sent here by automobile, hav ing been wrapped in wet burlap sacks. It appeared none the worse for wear after its long trip out of water. Cleat Simmons is going to make an address Sunday, July 30, at the Township Sunday School Convention at Hanes Grove at 11:00 o'clock. G. Harris on West Main Street Tuesday eve ning, with 12 members present. Mrs. David Brendle, class pres ident, presided over the meeting and conducted the devotionals. During the business session rou tine matters were dispatched. Contests were enjoyed during a pleasant social hour. Refresh ments were served. Miss Burcham Is Hostess Tuesday Evening Miss Beatrice Burcham was hostess Tuesday evening to honor Misses Carrie Taylor and Mar garet Renegar, student nurses at Rex hospital, Raleigh, who are here for a vacation. The guests were entertained at dinner at the Bon-Ton and fol lowing the dinner a theatre party was enjoyed. The guest list included: Misses Carrie Taylor, Margaret Renegar, Hilda Gae Renegar, Ruth May berry, Lorene Wolfe, Pansy Bur cham and Dick Lovering, Hugh Salmons, Charles Neaves, Leon ard Sheppard, John Kelley, Rus sell Burcham and Reg Harris. The Rockford Home Demonstra tion Club met last Monday after noon at the home of Mrs. Robert Burrus. The agent, Mrs. Grace Brown, gave a very interesting demonstration on canning beans which was beneficial to all the club members. Refreshments weie served and enjoyed by all. Miss Lillian Coe returned to her home last Sunday after having spent the past week in Concord, with Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Adams. Miss Margaret Sweatman of Winston-Salem is spending this week with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Coe. Miss Edith Thomas Gambill of Sparta spent the week-end with her sister Mrs. C. B. Burrus. Rev. D. G. Reece of Jonesville will begin the revival meeting at tha Rockford Baptist church next Sunday and will be assisted by Rev. Geo. E. Burrus of Rockford.
