Former President Says America Must Stay Out of War San Francisco, Sept. 1. —Her- bert Hoover, whose World War record helped pave his way to the presidency of the United States, tonight said American sympathies are with democracies, but "Amer ica must keep out of war." "This is one of the saddest days that has come to humanity in 100 years," said the only living form er president in a statement. "The situation in the world to day is not the act of the German people. It is the act of a group who hold them in subjection. The whole Nazi system is repug nant to the American people. The most of American sympathies will be with the democracies. "Whaetver our sympathies are, we cannot solve the problems of Europe. America must keep out of this war. The President and Congress should be supported in their every effort to keep us out. We can keep out if we have the resolute national will to do so. We can be of more service to Eu rope and humanity if we preserve the vitality and strength of the United States for use in the per iod of peace which must some- Elkin's Newest Drug Store Special Bargains Bargain seekers are reminded that there are many, many things needed for the home, and of utmost importance is that of a well stocked medicine cabinet, to gether with a full stock of every day drug needs. CONTROL In an effort to control tobacco insects, large numbers of Gran ville County growers have agreed to plow under the tobacco stalks on their farms immediately after harvesting their crop. And we must keep out if we are to preserve for civ ilization the foundations of dem ocracy and free men." Hoover pointed out that the war which has begun will kill millions of the world's best and most courageous men, as well as killing and starving millions of women and children. "It means another quarter of a century of impoverishment to the whole world," Hoover continued. "It will likely be a long war. It is possible that Poland may be overrun in a few months. But there seems no point of access from which an overwhelming at tack can be delivered from the British and French on one side and the Germans and Italians on the other, which might quick ly end the war. It is likely to be a war of slow attrition. "While assurances have been given that there will be no bomb ing of women and children, there may come a time of desperation when all restraints go to the wind. It is likely to be the most bar barous war that we have ever known." John W. Comer in Dobson on Wednesday night of last week for the first meeting of the 1939-40 school term. Virtually all principals in the county were present for the meeting. Hoyle S. The school heads discussed var ious problems arising from the opening of the new term, one of their actions being the approval of the new flat rental fee of $3 for high school pupils, this fee to cover all book rentals and the in dividual library fees. They also discussed the problems arising from transportation and NYA work. A committee, composed of J. Mark McAdams, of Elkin, J. Sam Gentry, of Mountain Park, and M. G. Stanley, of Beulah, was named to plan a new report card. Five of the schools took a def inite stand in favor of introduc ing six-man football this fall, ad ding a new autumn sport to les sen the emphasis on basketball that has prevailed in Surry coun ty for several years. The schools expected to play six-man football this season are Flat Rock, Cope land, Westfield, Pilot Mountain and Dobson. Further plans for the sport will be laid by repre sentatives of these schools.
