News of Jonesville Miss Virginia Lineberry, Editor Phone 44-M Mr. Roy Gentry spent the week-end with his family in Win ston-Salem. Mr. G. S. Wagoner, of Brooks Crossroads, visited friends In this community Monday afternoon. Mrs. M. A. Holcomb and son, Marvin Kent, returned from the Baptist hospital Friday. Both mother and son are getting along nicely. Rev. D. G. Reece filled the pul pit Sunday for Rev. J. P. Davis and preached a most inspiring sermon. Mrs. Kete Wagoner left for Danville. Va., after spending part of last week with Mr. and Mrs. Parks Groce. Mrs. Davie Sprinkle and chil dren, of Dobson, were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hampton. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Gough announce the birth of a son, Richard Lawrence, on September 10th. Mrs. D. R. Casstevens and chil dren, Elton and Kenneth, Mrs. F. A. Lineberry and Misses Mildred Harris and Hazel Phillips spent Wednesday afternoon in Win ston-Salem and while there visit ed Mrs. M. A. Holcomb who was a patient at Baptist hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hall spent the week-end in Reidsville, the guests of the former's brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Delos Underwood and Mr. Louis Mitchell spent Friday in Winston-Salem. Mr .and Mrs. Herman Murphy and Mrs. Eddie Murphy, of Ga lax, Va., were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Lineberry Friday. Mr. Ed Taylor spent the week end in Mount Airy with his fam ily. Miss Bertha Adams spent Sun day at Brooks Crossroads the guests of Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Wagoner. Mrs. J. C. Chappell and daugh ter, Dorethea. spent Sunday through Tuesday at Endless Cav erns, Natural Bridge and Wash ington. Mrs. John Mock and Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Mock, of Boonville, visited in the home of Mrs. P. H. Underwood Sunday night. Miss Edwina Chappell, of Cycle, was the guest of Miss Dorethea Chappell last week. Delia Woodhouse Circle Meets with Mrs. John Arnold The Delia Woodhouse Circle of the Baptist church met with Mrs. John Arnold Tuesday evening. Mrs. J. L. Brandon was in charge of the devotional. Mrs. W. I. Shugart was in charge of the program and was assisted by Mrs. Ivry Johnson, Miss Bertha Adams, Mrs. Tat Davis, Mrs. J. D. Eller, and Mrs. W. V. Holcomb. Mrs. W. V. Holcomb presided over a short business period after which a social half hour was enjoyed. Rose Marlowe Circle Meets With Mrs. Alex Biggs The Rose Marlowe circle of the Jonesville Baptist church met Tuesday evening, September 5, at the home of Mrs. Alex Biggs, with Mrs. Ivry Johnson as joint hostess, with eight members and two visitors present. Miss Bertha Adams was in charge of the pro gram and was assisted by Misses Hazel Phillips and Mildred Har ris, Mrs. D. R. Casstevens and Mrs. Parks Grace. Mrs. Jack Brown was in charge of the de votional. Little Jackie Brown rendered a solo. At the conclu sion of the program a social half hour was enjoyed. LITTLE ELKIN Mrs. Mabel Newman made a very interesting talk at the last Saturday night meeting. The Southern Harmoneers will be here next Saturday night and Rev. Clete Simmons will preach. Mr. and Mrs. James Byrd had as their guests Sunday Mrs. Mar vin Byrd and children, of States ville, Mrs. Erma Bowers, of Win ston-Salem, and Mrs. Molly Jolly, of Pleasant Home community. Misses Mary Laster, Nellie Laster, Reeta Vanhoy, Lucille Vanhoy, Margaret Settle, Hattie Bell Key and Zelma Key spent the day September 3 in States ville, the guests of Mrs. Mettie Hayes. THE ELKIN TRIBUNE. ELKIN. NORTH CAROLINA BETHEL Rev. R. J. Pardue filled his regular appointment at the church here last Sunday morniiig and evening. For the 11 o'clock service he read the 12th chapter of Hebrews, taking his text from the second verse, "Looking unto Jesus," and using for his sub ject, "A faith that looks up to the Lord." Ke preached to a good audience at the evening meeting. This being the time to elect the pastor and church and Sunday school officers for the year, a business meeting followed. The pastor, the clerk, D. J. Melton, the superintendent of the Sunday school, W. H. Jones, and the sec retary, Miss Pauline Pardue, were relected. The organization will be completed at Sunday school next Sunday morning when the teachers will be named. A good attendance is desired. The 118 th annual session of the.Brier Creek Baptist Associa tion will be held with Pishing Creek Arbor church, six miles cast of Wilkesboro, beginning Thursday before the first Sunday in October for whion delegates from this church were chosen at the meeting Sunday evening, as follows: Eugene Jones, J. P. Mathis, C. W. Gilliam, Jr., and W. T. Morrison. Alternates were D. J. Melton, W. H. Jones, Mrs. J P. Mathis and Mrs. J. T. Stroud. Attending the Green-Gray re union last Sunday held at the Clingman school campus, from this place were Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Green, Mrs. J. B. Green and family, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mel ton and Miss Elenoir Melton. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Triplette and Clay Mastin were the guests of Mrs. Triplette's brother and family last Sunday, Mr. J. C. Gilliam, of Jonesville. Mrs. W. A. Pardue recently spent a few days visiting her daughter and family, Mrs. A. P. Woodruff, of near Boonville. Mr. and Mrs. Baity Lowry, of Elkin, visited Mrs. Lowry's par ents here last Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Durham. Their little daughter, Joan, accompanied them home after spending several days with her grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Mathis and children, Junior and Edna, were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Mathis last Sunday and at tended a prayer service held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Parks Adams in the afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Lawrence had as their guests her niece, Mrs. Isabelle Disher, and family, of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Lelia Harris visited Mrs. John Ball at the Forsyth Sani torium last Saturday. Those attending the state-wide quartet singing held at Greens boro last Sunday from here were D. S. Gilliam, W. H. Jones, J. T. Stroud and Jack Osborne; from Jonesville, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones, Miss Pauline Morrison and Miss Doris Ashley; from Arling ton, Eugene Jones and Wayne Stroud. Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Green, Mrs. J. B. Green and Mr. and Mrs. Martin Green visited the former's sister, Mrs. Julia Pardue, of Cycle, last Sunday evening. Mrs. Pardue has been confined to her bed with illness for some time, we are sorry to note. Mrs. J. T. Stroud accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Seaman Dobbins and Mrs. J. C. Dobbins, of Elkin, on a pleasant trip last Sunday afternoon to interesting points in the mountains and over in Vir ginia. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Stroud and son, Ray, of Wilkesboro, Mrs. Louis Ferlazzo and little son, Ed die, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Armstrong and Thomas Rumple, of Win ston-Salem, were the guests of Mrs. C. W. Gilliam, Sr., and Mr. D. S. Gilliam's family at their home here Sunday afternoon. Miss Sadie Mathis visited her cousin. Miss Ethel Adams, of Swan Creek, the past week-end. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Triplette and family enjoyed a picnic din ner with relatives last Sunday near Mountain View. Mr. James Inscore, of Mount Airy, who was here to attend the Green-Gray reunion last Sunday, spent a while with his sister and family, Mrs. J. C. Hemric. Rev. Guss Myers, who is doing associational work as a mission ary in the Brier Creek churches, will- speak at Bethel church here the fourth Sunday evening at 7 o'clock. A good congregation is expected. PLEASANT HILL Misses Agnes and Gladys Tran sou and Mr. Edgar Transou were the week-end guests of Mr. Wen dell Stanley, of Fairview. We are happy to report that Mrs. R. L. Stoker has returned to her home from the hospital and is improving nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Claud Transou, of Leaksville, are spending the week here visiting vfriends and relatives. - Mrs. R. M Adams, of Wyom ing, W. Va., and Mrs. A. K. Adams and Vaden Adams, of Wyandotte, Mich., were the week- end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Couch. Mrs. Prudy Pettyjohn is visit ing in the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. Q. Couch. Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Paris and Calloway Hawks, of Mount Airy, were the Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Couch. Mrs. Zethria Transou had as her week-end guests Mr. and Mrs. Joyce Transou, of Danville, Va. Mr. William Lyons left Mon day for Norfolk, Va., where he will enlist in the U. S. Navy. Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Yarborough had as their Sunday dinner guests Mrs. Susan Shouman and Mrs. Eliza Fillemore, of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Julia Darnell and son, Jones, Jr., and ' Miss Dorothy Hutchens. Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Smoot are spending this week with their daughter, Mrs. A. L. Love, and family, of North Wilkesboro. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Smoot and son and daughter and Mr. George D. Smoot motored to the moun tains Sunday. A group from our church visit ed the Glen Hope Baptist church Sunday. They were Rev. and Mrs. D. W. Day and daughter, Irene, Mr. Monroe 'Collins, Mr. Dallas Gilliam, and Mi - . Clyde Couch. The Guiding Star and the Hanes Quartets sang. Mrs. Rosa Byrd, of Pineville, W. Va., is spending several weeks here with relatives and friends. BENHAM There will be an "Appreciation Day" held at Benham church Sunday, September 17. Every body is cordially invited to come and bring a well filled basket. The farmers throughout this section have been very busy tak ing care of their fodder and hay, also turning land, getting ready for sowing grain. Mr. and Mrs. John Hayes, of West Virginia, have been spend ing a few days with his mother, Mrs. Lodema Harp; also his sis ter, Mrs. Milt Windsor. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Durham and family, of Pennsylvania, have returned to their home af ter spending several days here visiting friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Tucker and little son, Hollis, were the Sunday guests of Mr. Tucker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Watt Tucker. They also had as their guest their daughter, Mrs. Closier McCann' and Mr. McCann, of Elkin. Mr. and Mrs. Roe Yarboro had as their guests Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Cap Yarboro and children and Mr. and Mrs. Talmage Yar boro, of Elkin, Mr. and Mrs. Da vid Cockerham, of Little Moun tain, and Mr. and Mrs. Lester Cockerham and family, of Elkin. Rev. George Curry filled his regular appointment Saturday and Sunday at North Wilkesboro. Mr. and Mrs. Ford, of Virginia, were the Sunday guests of their daughter, Mrs. Henry Boyd, and family. Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Gentry were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Berry Gentry, of Charity community. The Yarboro reunion will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Yarboro October 8, at the Hoots place, near Benham church. Everybody is invited to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spencer were the Sunday guests of Mrs. Spencer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Prank Barker, of Little Moun tain. EAST ELKIN Rev. Claude E. Flincham, ac companied by Mr. Herman Bur cham, attended the Flincham and Ashburn reunion held at the home of Rev. Flincham's parents at Pilot Mountain, recently. The men's council of East Elk in Baptist church is growing greatly in interest and are doing a great work. They hold their regular meeting each Monday night at 7:30 at the church. Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Nance spent Sunday in Greensboro visiting relatives. RONDA Mr. and Mrs. Warren Bentley and son, Jimmie, were visitors in the home of Mrs. Ella McLain in Wilkeeboro Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Martin had as their Sunday guests Mr. and Mrs. John Simpson and Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Owens, all of Rose boro, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mathis and children, of Winston- Salem, and Mr. and Mrs. James Martin. Mrs. John Byrd is spending some time wilh Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Byrd in Elkin. Misses Rachel Kelly and Kath leen Henson spent the week-end at Miss Henson's home in Cul lowhee. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Edwards and sons, Billy and Jimmy, spent the week-end in Smithfield with her sister, Mrs. Bill Hart. COOL SPRINGS Mr. aryd Mrs. Howard Presley, of Taylorsville, spent the day with Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Tucker Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Collicott, of Detroit, Mich., spent the week end the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Walker. Among our visitors Sunday were Mr. Lee Settle, of North Wilkesboro, Mr. Claude Wall and father, Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Wall and family, and Miss Laura Wall, all of near Elkin. Mr. Friel Flynn, of Macedonia, visited his daughter, Mrs. Wayne Tucker, and Mr. Tucker, Sunday. Miss Marie Eller, of Wilkes boro, a teacher in the Benham- Cool Springs Consolidated school, was a visitor with us Sunday. Rex. Arvil Alexander filled the pulpit at the eleven o'clock hour in the absence of the pastor. For one just starting in the ministry, Rev. Alexander spoke well indeed. The picnic given by Miss Lil lian Tucker for the Intermediate girls of this Sunday school was much enjoyed. A trip was made to Kapps Mill on Michells river, where a class from Union Cross was also picnicking and a great time was had by all. Rev. Ely Jordan passed by and stopped with them for a while. Mr. Jor dan is one of the young people's favorite ministers. A couple of picnics are to be held next Sunday, with more to come a bit later. There were 167 present Sunday. Mr. S. O.
