FARMERS ASKED TO SLOW PACE Record Rate of Tohacco Sales Causing Congestion at Warehouses COULD AFFECT PRICES Washington. Oct. 23. —J. B. Hutson. assistant agricultural ad justment administrator, appealed to southern flue-cured tobacco growers today to slow up the pace at which they have been selling their leaf since the markets re opened earlier this month. Hutson issued a statement say ing marketing was "proceeding at a record rate," causing congestion at warehouses and redrying plants with a subsequent damaging of tobacco. This, he added, "doubtless has caused prices to be lower in many cases." The markets were closed near ly a month because of depressed prices resulting from a with drawal of foreign buyers when the European war broke out. Hutson said although prices this season to date had not been high, there had been some uni formity since the markets reop ened and added "there does not appear to be any reason for rush ing tobacco to market at this time. "If farmers could slow down movement of tobacco so as to clear up the present congestion I would be more inclined to expect a small advance in prices than any decline from the levels that have prevailed during the past two weeks. "Certainly tobacco will bring more if it is marketed in an or derly manner than if it is rushed to market and either damaged before it is sold or forced into re drying and prizing plants where it may be damaged before it can be redried and put in hogsheads." Hutson said growers could do more to correct the present con gestion than anyone else. He said 200.000,000 pounds had been sold from October 10 to Oc tober 20. This movement, Hutson added, exceeded by far sales during any corresponding period in any pre vious year. | ELKIN VALLEY Mr. and Mrs. Lester Holloway had as their guests Sunday Miss Betty Lyon, Mr. Marvin Beach, Mr. and Mrs. Beach, of Thomas ville, and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Lyon and children, of Ronda.
