Work was started Wednesday on the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Gavin Dortch off of Old Street. The home will be a seven-room, two-story colonial building of wood construction. Mr. Devereux joined her for a week-end visit. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Ashby and Mr. and Mrs. Devereux visited relatives in Greensboro. The entire faculty of the city schools and the North Elkin school attended the county-wide teachers' meeting held in Mount Airy Tuesday afternoon, together with the teachers of the Mount Airy schools. Mrs. Ruth Dick Everette, field worker for the North Carolina Educational As sociation, was speaker for the meeting. A new division, the North Wilkes boro Division, was created, and Mr. E. C. James, of this city, was named as division superintend ent. The newly created division is composed of twelve associa tions in Western North Carolina. Navy and had left for Pensacola, Fla., to begin his duties. .It was George DeWitt Smoot, brother of Frank Smoot. who reenlistjed in the navy. The error is regretted. CLUB TO SPONSOR MOVIE AT LYRIC Thursday evening, November 2, members of the Woman's Club will sponsor the presentation of the picture "Stronger Than De sire," starring Virginia Bruce and Walter Pidgeon, at the Lyric theatre. Llewellyn, clerk of court cf Surry county, announced Tues day afternoon that the next term of criminal court will be held be ginning December 18 and con tinue through the week. Judge Zeb V. Nettles will preside. The September term of court was closed due to various reasons and no court term has been held since. The biggest joke on matrimony is some of the couples that try it.
