gABO| MUCH ABOUT NOTHING Simpson, dashing from the office last week after leaving us that picture of a flood on Main street, was scheduled to turn up with another picture for this week's column, but at this writing he hasn't put in his appearance. Maybe it's a good thing, ready served notice that he is i in all that water last week. ' getting my feet wet," he said. If' Simpson should get another pic ture no telling what would hap pen. Nothing much to write about this week, unless it's the Duke- Carolina game scheduled for Sat urday. And at this distance it looks as if Carolina and the Blue Devils might have to play in the hospital, what with all the in juries that have been plaguing both teams. If Carolina bowls over the Blue Devils Saturday it's said they may get a bowl game bid which would pit them against Tulane, the team they came from behind to tie earlier in the season. There would be plenty of interest in such a contest. It seems the Gab Bag has not been the only complainant in this matter, a large number of people protesting. We don't know how the police are getting along, but we were talking with the driver of a light delivery truck some days ago, and what he taid we feel is worth passing along. This driver, and we are not go ing to give him away, invited us to ride with him some Saturday afternoon. We said thanks, but even with conditions as they are we still enjoy living. Then he said that if he didn't drive fast he would get away behind with his deliveries. That's one angle we hadn't thought of when we wrote what we did some weeks ago. It didn't enter our mind that the delivery truck drivers would get behind in their deliveries. Of course we, or anyone else, wouldn't expect a driver to slow down in that case. What does an injured or dead child amount to where delayed deliveries are concerned? For goodness sakes yes, speed up and deliver on time. There are plenty of undertakers to take care of whoever he might hit in passing. THE ELKIN TRIBUNE, ELKIN, NORTH CAROLINA We should be ashamed of ourself for even mentioning the matter. But, In fairness to the particu lar driver with whom we talked, a young man whom we don't be lieve would deliberately harm a fly If he could help It, we want to say that he Is not the fastest driver among the several to whom we were referring a couple of weeks back. The most vicious of these drivers, after we had said our say through this column, has been putting on an extra spurt of speed whenever he passes our house or sees us on the street. A couple of more times and we are going to report him to his em ployer. A warning here, with no names mentioned, is apparently time wasted. Police here have put in some extra time at night in an effort to apprehend speeders without success. It's not at night that the speeding takes place, it's in the daytime when children are play ing along the streets. And it's not all delivery truck drivers that are guilty, either. There are plenty of Qther folks, among them respectable married women who are old enough to know better. Just because they possess sleek, high powered cars is no reason for them to make a menace of themselves along the residential streets. Come over and watch them whiz-z-z-z by sometimS. t* * * THIS AND THAT Since starting this column sometime ago, we've had a letter from Simpson, the man with the left-handed brain, who declares that Adolf Hitler is not in Ger many at all, but in the United States! L "I have every reason to be lieve," Simpson writes, "that one of Hitler's doubles is working for him in Germany and that Adolf himself is somewhere in the vi cinity of Elkin where he is per sonally engaged in a scouting trip to determine the strength of Elkin's navy. It may have been he sneaked in last week while the river was flooding Main street. His submarine may be based somewhere on the bottom of Big Elkin creek even now." The letter goes on: "But don't worry about it. We are on the trail with our Baby Brownie cam era, and if anything turns up you can depend on it we will snap it. Hitler, if he is really in this sec tion, may turn up boldly in Elkin and demand that Jonesville be ceded to the reich. Or he may be after W. S. Reich, there's no tell ing, and demand that West Elkin be thrown in. He has plenty of gall, you know. Anyway, if you meet him on Main street liberat ing somebody, don't say we didn't tell you." And that's what we have to put up with when Simpson is about. See you next week.
